Do Bowl Games still mean anything?
-
TiernanMaybe its just that I'm still hurting from last night but all the talk about what bowl game teams will be going to doesn't really interest me this year. I mean other than the NCG, does anybody really care who plays in the Orange, Rose, Sugar...etc ad nauseum? I can see OSU getting absolutely swacked because the players (and fans) are going to care less about playing in one of these games.
Whats your opinion are Bowls still relevant ? -
Pick6They help or hurt with national perception, so yes, the mean something to a program like OSU.
-
wildcats20The BCS bowls, yes.
All the others, no. -
believerI know how you feel. IF Ohio State had won we'd all be jacked the few weeks about the NC as well as all the other BCS and non-BCS bowls involving B1G teams.
I said this yesterday and I think it's still true....If Ohio State had lost a game earlier in the season and then earned its way into the Orange Bowl, we'd all still be excited about it because it would "prove" Ohio State is an elite program and it certainly helps with recruiting.
But because Ohio State had just won 24 straight, because we're all tired of the national Buckeye Hatin', and because Ohio State was soooooo close to getting a NC bid but didn't quite have the horses to get the job done we're all feeling a bit let down. The Orange Bowl now seems like a consolation prize.
This too shall pass. I guarantee you that by the time New Years Day rolls around you'll be wearing scarlet & grey, sucking down the brewskies, and screaming at the TV when Clemson's QB shreds the Buckeye secondary.
Just sayin' -

Do you think players givafuk about "national perception"? I personally think they do not and they will just go thru the motions to get ready.Pick6;1550350 wrote:They help or hurt with national perception, so yes, the mean something to a program like OSU. -

Perhaps some seniors and those who have NFL aspirations might feel that way, but most of the team will probably (or should) have a huge chip on their shoulders and will play like they have something to prove. If they don't then Meyer and his staff aren't earning their pay.Tiernan;1550369 wrote:Do you think players givafuk about "national perception"? TiernanYou're wrong Believer, kids don't think that way...they will not have a chip on their shoulder for Clemson because they got schooled by MSU.
-

It's Meyer's job to get them ready. Quit your sobbing and support your team. You are thinking the same way "the kids" do. I know of about 123 teams in the nation that wish they could have had the run OSU just had.Tiernan;1550374 wrote:You're wrong Believer, kids don't think that way...they will not have a chip on their shoulder for Clemson because they got schooled by MSU. -

BINGO but we think like guys who chose MAC schools. lolPick6;1550376 wrote:It's Meyer's job to get them ready. Quit your sobbing and support your team. You are thinking the same way "the kids" do. I know of about 123 teams in the nation that wish they could have had the run OSU just had. -
TiernanHa ha..."sobbing"...you are clueless if you think Meyer and his staff are going to change ingrained DNA. I support the Bucks more than you can ever hope to Sparky...but I also can smell a disaster waiting to happen. Who said repeatedly last week that MSU would be a dogfight?

I take it you won't be watching the Orange Bowl then?Tiernan;1550391 wrote:Ha ha..."sobbing"...you are clueless if you think Meyer and his staff are going to change ingrained DNA. TiernanOf course ill be watching dipshit but I'm very concerned the OSU haters are going to have a field day reciting "can you imagine if these guys had gotten into the NCG?"...and that will not be representative of who this team was, because I believe they were much better than the past two weeks have shown. But there are some significant personnel and coaching strategy deficiencies.
-
Pick6if they can't get over the loss and get ready to play in nearly a month, then they are all pussies and should have their scholly revoked.
-
ernest_t_bassNo, not in today's "Championship or Bust" society. Everyone wants to be the best, and if you're not, then you're nothing. It's a plague, and I hate it. The very mentality is hurting a lot of scholastic sports. If you're not the best, why even try? ... So kids don't even go out of the team.

So you were hoping the Buckeyes would have an opportunity to face FSU in the NG just to watch Ohio State's secondary get decimated by Winston and THEN hear all the OSU hatin'?Tiernan;1550402 wrote:Of course ill be watching dipshit but I'm very concerned the OSU haters are going to have a field day reciting "can you imagine if these guys had gotten into the NCG?"...and that will not be representative of who this team was, because I believe they were much better than the past two weeks have shown. MSU did the Buckeyes a favor to be honest.
If Meyer doesn't get these guys ready to go against Clemson he doesn't deserve his multi-millions.
By your way of thinking the ONLY bowl game that should be played is the NC.
So what incentive is there for ANY of the other teams playing in any of the other bowls (BCS or otherwise) outside the NC game have to play hard for besides pride, a few bowl game freebies, a chance to shine in front of NFL scouts on national TV, and perhaps some tattoos? -
WebFireSome of you are severely underestimating the competitiveness of these kids.

TiernanI'd like to be wrong on this one...
BUT
...as usual I probably won't be. -

so, if they lose to Clemson, will it be because they aren't ready or just weren't good enough?Tiernan;1550488 wrote:I'd like to be wrong on this one...

TiernanI know you're a short bus rider but follow along closely now...I doubt either team really gives a shit about being there but my suspicion is since OSU flew a little closer to the top prize than Clemkadiddlehopper did, the SC rednecks will want this one slightly more.

so you're planting the seed for an excuse if OSU loses on a national stage yet again. Got it.Tiernan;1550500 wrote:I know you're a short bus rider but follow along closely now...I doubt either team really gives a shit about being there but my suspicion is since OSU flew a little closer to the top prize than Clemkadiddlehopper did, the SC rednecks will want this one slightly more. -
TiernanThe thread is about overall Bowl relevance NOT about OSUs chances.

Classyposter58Players absolutely love them, and so do the alumni who basically use this as their vacation every year. I think they are more important to small schools, for instance the Motor City Bowl is huge for BG. You gotta think, it was only what 5 years ago that only 2 MAC teams made a bowl, champion went to Detroit and runner-up went to Mobile. Urban went 17-6 with BG in '02 and '03 and they didn't go to a bowl game either year
