Gee thinks OSU would have had 2012 bowl ban even if they had self imposed in 2011

It's not that OSU would have been given the choice. Given the choice they clearly would have taken it last year before knowing what this year held. The way that the system works is that the Committee on Infractions waits for the school to self-impose penalties, then they decide if they are severe enough or not, and they can add to them if they feel they need to. There are many problems with this system, but the main one is that the NCAA almost always adds onto whatever punishment the school self imposes (but if the school didn't self impose anything, then the punishment from the NCAA would be worse than had they self-imposed something). So Gee is very possibly right that had OSU chosen to self-impose a bowl ban last season that the COI would have still added a post-season ban this year as well.

The real problem here is that the powers at OSU legitimately believed there wouldn't be a post-season ban, and I can't really blame them for being wrong. The NCAA and the COI is so inconsistent with their punishments that it's impossible to guess what they are going to do.

    Bingo.
the NCAA was under great pressure to impose sanctions
...and here is the crux of the problem. The NCAA shouldn't be imposing sanctions based on 'pressure'. If one of its eleventybillion rules is broken it should have a clear and defined punishment. it should n't be freewheeling its sanctions and making them up as it goes along. If Gee and company are guilty of anyhting, it is that they oversupport and cowtow to this institution, when it was/is clearly in their best interest not to.

"Bitter" tiernan?...then direct it towards the piss poor institution known as the NCAA.

Oh don't for a moment think I cut those MFkg SOBs any slack. Their handling of the entire affair has stunk from the get go. "Allowing" the Tat 5 to play in a bowl game but suspending them for the first 5 games of the next season was the most asinine decision ever made. Its like state court saying "Hey Mr. Coke Dealer we got you dead to rights but we're going to let you make one more giant score so you can pass along more cash to your homies, but make sure you show up for your 10 yr jail sentence in 6 mos."

Mr. Coke Dealer then says "F-that! I'm outta here." and the next thing we know he's working in Oakland as a dealer again.
