Conference Realignment Discussion - Hoops Edition

For the college basketball fanatics among us, I thought it'd only make sense to reincarnate an earlier thread on this board re conference realignment, as the landscape appears to be amidst another major shift and one that will greatly affect hoops.
What's happening right now...
Maryland in hot pursuit of bolting the ACC for the Big Ten. Sources have told ESPN that the Terrapins have accepted an offer from the Big Ten and are committed to leave. They will, however, have a barrier in their way as the ACC recently raised its conference exit fee to $50 million. With Maryland's athletic department in financial disarray, that might pose a problem. However, similarly to the situation with Nike at Oregon, Maryland is powered by the founder of Under Armour and apparently he's been the major force behind the potential move.

If Maryland moves to the Big Ten, Georgetown and St. John's could be on the move to the ACC as replacements. From strictly a basketball standpoint, I'd love it. Georgetown is one of the all-time great programs and I think St. John's could reach that level once again.

Rutgers is definitely an interesting notion with regard to the Big Ten. Seems like a really terrible fit athletically, but I guess would give the Big Ten a presence in the far northeast/New York area and Rutgers is a good academic school, which would fit well in the Big Ten.
The Big East is on life support right now. -

Maryland officially a member of the Big Ten. Unfortunate that the ACC has lost a charter member, but football and money talks and the Big Ten will provide that for the Terrapins.
I hope the ACC now pursues Georgetown and St. John's. What I really hope for, however, is that everyone would just calm the ---- down and stay in their own conference. I am so tired of this constant shifting. It's all a joke and really hurting the tradition of our sports. -

I hope the Big East and Big 12 go Bye Bye and we end up with four, 16 team conferences. ACC, SEC, B1G and Pac-12 would be fine with me. Better than the shit we have now with the BE and I think the Big 12 is tetering on being mediocre as well.
For this to happen, though, the ACC needs to get some football schools to join. Georgetown and SJ dont even have 1A teams. -

Oh the Big East is done. Poor Boise State, finally join a big conference, and everyone leaves. The Big East is on life support right now.
And Rutgers isn't a bad addition athletically. Basketball they've been horrendous (which is maybe what you were going for since this is the CBB forum..lol), but football they've been pretty good lately. Lots of NFL stars, 5-1 in bowl games in the last decade, 8-1 record this year.
But yes, RU and Maryland were added as assets, not because Jim Delany was pumped for Penn State/Maryland next February. -

Good point on Rutgers football. I guess I just really haven't heard as much about the Scarlet Knight football team this year, but I know they've fielded good teams in the last several seasons. (They will never compete for the championship in the Big Ten, though.) If UConn and Louisville do end up heading to the ACC, as rumors are speculating, and Georgetown and St. John's eventually follow suit as basketball additions only, the ACC will have established itself as the premier basketball league of the "super conferences," if the landscape eventually unfolds as such.
Duke, North Carolina, Syracuse, Connecticut, Georgetown, Louisville, St. John's, NC State, Notre Dame, Wake Forest (traditionally). That'd be a sick lineup and produce one hell of an exciting conference tournament.
While I hate what the conferences are becoming and the traditions that are being erased along the way, there's nothing that can be done about it so might as well find something to look forward to. -

Ah, yes, Pitt. And I didn't include Florida State, even though Leonard Hamilton has built a yearly contender in Tallahassee, because the Seminoles are a high flight risk right now. As a traditional football power, I'd be very suprised if Florida State and even Miami didn't one day try to jump ship to the SEC. As others have pointed out, the Marlyand grab was motivated entirely by the Big Ten's desire to build a presence on the East Coast. That's it. They will win nothing in football ever and I don't think will even be competitive with the upper echelon of the conference's basketball schools for quite awhile. Marlyand has been in disarray since Gary Williams left. Mark Turgeon has significant work to do. -

It's funny to pay attention to this from a basketball perspective..simply because basketball has almost 0 play into these decisions. So it's like they make a move, then later go, "Oh, and the ACC I guess just became a pretty good basketball league.."
Basketball isn't the main money maker, i get it. But damn, they took the best basketball league and just ripped it up. Kind of crazy when you think about it. -

In terms of a football decision, which is what it comes down to, you're probably right. The Big 12 is still a premier football conference with Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Kansas State, Texas Tech and Baylor. So it'd be attractive obviously.
However, I was just reading an article today in the KC Star that said the Big 12 is happy at 10 teams, due to now having a clean round-robin schedule in football, and not currently reaching out to offer any new additions. Apparently, the Big 12 was told by consultants that its foray into acquiring Big East market shares has not added any new value to the league and nor is it likely that adding any new ones will either. This philosophy could change quickly, however, if the SEC continues to ante up and reach "super conference" status. That will leave the other conferences scrambling to secure more teams.
The whole thing is a mess. I don't know how any fan could be happy with this result. -

The Big 12 will be forced to expand or disband. I'd love to add OU and OSU to the B1G. -

FSU definitely wants out of the ACC.
