Xavier @ Butler
-
dlazzDid anyone see the conclusion of this game? Talk about home-team refs...
-
ralphus33Xavier got hosed.
-
dlazzWhen Brent and the other idiot announcer were talking about the clock needing +1 second I knew what was going to happen...
I can't believe they just decided "Welp, the game must be over because the clock messed up. Let's give Butler that basket anyways." -
MulvaA lot of bad officiating down the stretch both ways.
No way did Howard travel for Butler when they were down 1 with around a minute left.
Then I thought Hayward definitely fouled on the inbound pass. I'm not sure how that was a jump ball.
And I thought there should have been a travel on Butler before the Hayward layup. The Butler guy was on the ground when he got the ball, then he stood up before he lost control of it.
Then the whole clock thing to end it. Bad. -

LOL the "other idiot announcer" was Bob Knight.dlazz wrote: When Brent and the other idiot announcer were talking about the clock needing +1 second I knew what was going to happen...

I thought that too. When they pulled the coaches in to talk to them about what they'd decided I knew what was going to happen. Arguably the worst officiating I've ever seen in a bball game. -
wes_mantoothThat was def a homer job. A no brainer foul that was called a jump ball and then that clock malfunction......what a joke.
-
Laley23Malfunctioning clock is bad enough, then to NOT give Xavier a chance but to still call the Butler bucket good is asinine.
-
CinciX12See, this is why I like you guys.
I won't go off for an hour because my opinion is obvious haha.
But we shouldn't have let the officials make that call in the end of the game. Terrible effort the beginning of the game and too many Butler offensive rebounds. This loss is probably the difference between an NIT/NCAA appearance. Sad it had to come down to the officials. I think with the clock situation though they did what they were able to given what the rules state.
Tomorrow's another day. -
JugheadThe clock is in the officials hands. The ref nearest the ball as it was going out of bounds clicked the button to stop the clock, yet allowed play to go on as normal. It is the official's job to blow the damn whistle if he/she stops the clock, regardless if the infraction occurred. With what happened in the final few seconds of the game, it is obvious that the officials were biased to Butler, and the NCAA should look at suspending the crew.

Xavier's beat writer for the joke of the newspaper in this city called the Enquirer said that Horizon League officials do not use Precision Timing systems like the major conferences (you know, the ones with money). So it was solely on the shoulders of the clock operator.Jughead wrote: The clock is in the officials hands. I thought that this was a requirement in all D1 (obviously I was wrong). Did anyone else think this though? -
JugheadAre you kidding me? One of the premier "Mid-Major" conferences doesn't have the boxes, yet the measly MAC, OVC, Missouri Valley, etc... have them.
It just sounds like a way to cover up poor officiating to me. -

I wasn't close enough to the court today to tell for sure. It wouldn't surprise me though.Jughead wrote: Are you kidding me? One of the premier "Mid-Major" conferences doesn't have the boxes, yet the measly MAC, OVC, Missouri Valley, etc... have them.

I'm not upset about the timing at the end of the game though. The jump ball call made me contemplate sending death threats to each of them, however. -
sherm03Bullshit call. Period. I can't believe the end of that game.
It all comes down to conference play now for Xavier. If X wants to make the NCAA...they need to roll through conference play and win the A-10 tourney...because the win over UC isn't going to be enough of a resume booster to get into the big dance. -

Not when they lose to teams like UAB.sherm03 wrote: Bullshit call. Period. I can't believe the end of that game.

jt_13Regardless of whether the "operator malfunction" caused one second or ten seconds of stopped time, the point is both teams played the last 14.7 seconds with the belief and understanding that there were 14.7 seconds left in the game. I've been a clock operator for HS games for years, and I will admit it's easy to get a little trigger happy at the end of the game when it's loud and tense. I am guessing the operator hit stop for a second when the official was signalling "tipped" because the ball went into the backcourt. I also have to believe that the only was the officials new about the accidental stoppage was because the scorekeeper told them after Hayward made the shot. There is NO WAY the officials new about the clock if they were all watching the frantic action on the court. Very very poor ending to a pretty good game.

pbuckIt was the correct call IMO

Anyone with half a brain realizes the end of that game was BS. Did Xavier deserve to win? Probably not. But it was a BS ending to a really great game. -
cbus4lifeXavier got hosed.
But, with that said, i did think Butler was the better team, though only by a slim margin.
Sucks, though, i was cheering for X, and would have been a great "resume" win. -
tiger1990Two B.S. calls at the end, without a doubt (the foul; the clock). Anyway, possibly a learning experience for X. If Mack can convince Crawford & Lyons to quit auditioning for NBA scouts and play team basketball, Xavier will win the A-10. It's like having CJ Anderson & BJ Raymond back with 5th years of eligibility out there on the floor...pass the goddamn ball.

CardsFlyinHighHad the clock not stopped, it is likely there woulda been no time left for a Xavier possession, but how can they get punished for the timekeepers mistake. They should've let them play the final 1.2.
-
dlazz
Had the clock not stopped it is also possible that Butler had rushed their shots (even more so) and not made any of them, and then THEY would have one more notch in the loss column.CardsFlyinHigh wrote: Had the clock not stopped, it is likely there woulda been no time left for a Xavier possession, but how can they get punished for the timekeepers mistake. -
CardsFlyinHighWell, lets just hope Xavier aint a bubble team come March. This could really come back to haunt them.
