Penn State considers changes to football uniforms

On Tuesday night, in a one-hour conference call with players' parents, O'Brien mentioned that he had talked to Nike with the intention of changing the uniform style, even putting names on the backs of jerseys, a practice Paterno disagreed with. Details of the discussion were first reported by the Reading Eagle. O'Brien also said the alterations in style might have been requested too late to apply to this season.
However, on Friday, O'Brien indicated that several changes, which he did not specify, will be in store when the Nittany Lions take the field at Beaver Stadium for their Sept. 1 season opener against Ohio.
Asked if any change in the iconic uniforms - which with its black shoes, no decals on helmets, no names on jerseys have become as much of Penn State's persona as players handing the ball to referees after scoring a touchdown - would upset traditionalists, O'Brien replied: "Turn the page."
"It's a new era, a new era," he said at the Big Ten football media interview session. "Changes were made in 1966 probably. Changes are going to be made in 2012 as well. Jump on board. Support this team and support these players."
Paterno took over as head coach in 1966, but the uniform continued to evolve. The basic blue and white design began in 1975 and continued right up until last year, although in 1980 striping on the sleeves and the collar were introduced. The striping was discontinued only last year.
O'Brien said changes always have been in the works.

It would be almost eerie to turn on a Penn State game and not see the solid white helmets and starkly navy blue shirts. Almost sad, I think. That is college football. Unfortunately, time always moves on.

To think a color change on a jersey helps erase anything such as child rape, though, just causes laughter. It won't work. Although, I am sure Tom Rinaldi will say something stupidly dramatic like, "It's ironic that the very idea behind the nameless jersey at Penn State, to place team beyond all else, was the very reason that Penn State [ridiculously drawn-out, teary-eyed delivery] catastrophically came crashing down. With ESPN in an ironically bleak Happy Valley, I am Tom Rinaldi." Lol.

    Keep them the same.

Putting names on the back of jerseys is a recruiting pitch. It will probably have 0 impact, but O'Brien has to do anything possible to have a chance of success.

The more they can distance themselves from the old regime the better..go for it.

The uniforms were the best in all of sports. If they change, I will be sad to see them go.

It will be tough to see them go. They had a classic indistinguishable look to them.

However, they are in a new era. Had they kept switching coaches every decade or so, the changes over the years would hardly be noticed or cared.

If that's a key PSU recruiting pitch, they are in bigger trouble than I originally thought. I mean, having your name on the back of your uniform is completely meaningless. Not having that certainly hasn't hurt Indiana basketball throughout the decades.

I imagine that it has more to do with trying to "start anew." That's just my take.

Yeah, that will sever the tie.

gosh a ruddies, just part of a process, jay. accept the penalties, take down the statue, change the uniforms.
and then you or one of your buddies will screw it up when they play OU by putting flowers where the statue or have someone especially a kid hold up a sign "joe we miss you'
    and it goes viral.

^Maybe Nike simply understands that the Penn State program itself and those who are currently a part of it are completely unlinked to the atrocities that one man committed and wants to be a part of the new Penn State moving forward.

I applaud Nike for not placating to the masses and jumping ship just because that's what a "good" PR move would have been.

I'd say now is a good time for a uniform change. Will definitely help to distinguish the pre and post paterno era.
  • jordo212000
I would have never said change them, but now I think a change would be good after this mess.

With that being said, I think you change them now. Have them this way for 5 years or so, and then switch back to something similar to what they are wearing now.

Lol, your theatrics are amusing, I will give you that.

Truth be told, I don't care if my new Air Pippens were stitched together in Madagascar by a kidnapped fetus, they are going to look slick when I am shooting jumpers.

Good way to raise money for the athletic dept. New uniforms will mean a new clothing design that fans will rush out to buy. They can change everything about the program and the school, but people will still feel the same as they do now about the school, whether it is good or bad.

Gee, I can't wait for the Curly/ Shultz trials to come forward. It's plain to see that the 3000000 page Freeh report was all hogwash and Joe Pa will be exxonerated from the grave.

I think meds need to be adjusted for a few around here.
