Penn St. recruiting is not dead (new commit)
-
WebFirePenn State just signed a new recruit. A 2012 kid. 0*, with offers from Eastern Kentucky, Robert Morris and Wofford.
Is PSU panicking or what?

Pick6LOOOOL. Wow.

Classyposter58Penn State is gonna completely fall off the map. Who wants to go to a college where they have zero chance to play for a conference title even for their whole career?
-
vball10setIt's going to be a rough 7-8 years. This season they'll be all right (7-5?), but after that--blah.

Love Wofford's program. The Terriers have come a long way.WebFire;1235161 wrote:Penn State just signed a new recruit. A 2012 kid. 0*, with offers from Eastern Kentucky, Robert Morris and Wofford.

3-4 D and a triple option offense. If I remember correctly they had a quarterback from Cincinnati last year. Apparently was a pretty bright kid. -

Pretty much agree, although I'm not sure they'll be over .500.
It's going to be a rough 7-8 years. This season they'll be all right (7-5?), but after that--blah.
The NCAA went way overboard trying to impress people that they are not the bloated, arbitrary, manipulated organization that they really are. In reality, all they proved was that their detractors were right all along. -

On the other hand - if you're not going to be NFL-level talent or even have a realistic shot at competing for a starting position at a power program like tOSU, Alabama, Texas, etc, a full scholarship to PSU with the prospect of playing regularly might be a pretty good deal vs. going to a D1-AA or lower school. Penn State is still a pretty good school academically.Classyposter58;1235247 wrote:Penn State is gonna completely fall off the map. But - the program is going is be in sad shape for at least the next six years. -

They will be getting MAC/IAA type players for the next several years. Look at the type of record that they those schools have against Big Ten teams. They have a long decade ahead.ccrunner609;1235567 wrote:They will get decent players. probably rape the MAC schools recruiting pool. they will be lucky to be .500 for the rest of the decade -

For the most part you're probably right but they will still get a few die hard go to Penn State no matter what (4-5*) in state Pennsylvania kids.Al Bundy;1235637 wrote:They will be getting MAC/IAA type players for the next several years. Sounds like quite a few of their key recruits are staying. I'll say again that I can't believe how well O'Brien was able to recruit the current class given the circumstances. It's even more unbelievable he can hang on to recruits this good AFTER the sanctions. He has to be the best recruiter that has ever lived.
While I respect the recruits sticking with their decision I'm a little surprised. If I'm a top recruit and had aspirations of playing in the NFL would I want to go to a school with only 65 on the roster every year? Be a QB on a team that will have little/no depth on the line, WRs, etc? You could be the best QB ever and look like crap for 4 years because you don't have the pieces around you to do anything because your roster/scholarships has been crippled. As a parent I'm surprised they aren't thinking the same thing. -
MulvaObviously they'll drop off some, but this move isn't panicking at all. This is a 2012 recruit. You're aware that 99% of 2012 recruits are committed, right? This is just to replace an inevitable transfer.

If this situation hadn't have taken place, they wouldn't be taking this kid.Mulva;1236252 wrote:Obviously they'll drop off some, but this move isn't panicking at all. This is a 2012 recruit. In no way does that make this a panic move. A shitty depth player > 0 player at all. That's logic. Not panic.WebFire;1236261 wrote:If this situation hadn't have taken place, they wouldn't be taking this kid. -

passwordI don't really see where this is going to hurt a kids chance to advance to the next level. You have to remember this is Penn State, not Eastern Kentucky or some other school that never gets noticed by the NFL scouts. They will still be competitive and they will still send kids to the next level if their coach can continue to sell the academics and prestige of a Penn State degree. The bowl ban doesn't mean a whole lot when it comes to getting noticed by the NFL scouts and there will be all kinds of attention on the program for the next couple of years and the media will be looking for a story to show how a program survived such severe punishment. I only look for about 2 down years, but it's not like they were posting undefeated seasons or competing for the national championship before this. I wonder what would happen if they find out that after more investigating and the rest of the trials that Paterno was not involved in any cover up, do they go back and change the punishment?

No kidding. But panicking would be signing 0* players for 2014. Filling spots that have been/will be opened by transfers for the season that starts in 1 month isn't a panic.WebFire;1236273 wrote:(A shitty depth player > 0 player at all) = (Not in a very good position.) -

That's an excellent and thought-provoking question. But don't expect anyone here to even listen to it. They've already slammed down their gavels. Guilty, no matter what.password wrote: I wonder what would happen if they find out that after more investigating and the rest of the trials that Paterno was not involved in any cover up, do they go back and change the punishment? -

You have to remember that most people on here are OSU fans and some just thrive on others misfortune.reclegend22;1236297 wrote:That's an excellent and thought-provoking question. But don't expect anyone here to even listen to it. They've already slammed down their gavels. Guilty, no matter what. -

I think it will hurt a lot more than people realize. Even though 'this is Penn State', NFL scouts that see them want to see production. If your team is made terrible by the loss of scholarships it makes you look worse. For example, a QB might shine at one program because he has time to throw behind a great line and has great receivers to throw to. If you don't have that you get pressured, throw a ton of ints, and struggle in your development overall.password;1236293 wrote:I don't really see where this is going to hurt a kids chance to advance to the next level. The scholarships don't seem like that big of a deal until you start breaking down the numbers.
Currently 85 scholarships allowed.
25 seniors on this years roster will be graduated by 2013
85-25=60(barring early entrants/transfers) left on the roster. Max of 15 scholarship recruits allowed for 2013, so 75 'good' players. The other 10 scholarships they have left will be given to walk-ons to make 85.
In 2014 the 65 max scholarship kicks in.
85 from 2013 will drop to at least 56 after 29 (current Juniors) graduate.
They can then either give all 56 still on the roster scholarships (which will no doubt have some walk-ons) and only recruit 9 new players or recruit their max of 15 and start pulling scholarships from current players.
Having a 2-deep is considered a bare minimum. That's 44 players on O and D and 66 if you add in the minimum bodies on special teams. Considering most teams lose several players to injury for a season or much more than that who might miss games for being banged up, they will have many walk-ons playing all over the place by necessity.
My guess is they will be fine this year, a little worse in 2013, and pretty awful from 2014 through at least 2018 (minimum) -

Why would they even consider such a thing. Paterno's involvement or not doesn't change much.password;1236293 wrote:... At 2014, they'll be past panicking. That will be reality. Let me know if OSU or Michigan (which they don't actually have any open) fills their last 2012 spots with kids with offers from Wofford.Mulva;1236296 wrote:No kidding.
