The Official NO PLAYOFF Thread

  • ytownfootball
The "Opinions on this years bowl games" thread has yet again reminded me of this thread, so with what I posted above, what's your take?

Would a play-off be better? Duh

Is what we have better than when we had UM and Nebraska swapping spit the last time it was split? Duh

There needs to be a lot less whinning about this whole thing and just accept it.

What you are asking for in reality is an NCAA sanctioned champion.

Pre BCS...we had one...or two...based on tha AP rankings. Yeah, 2, people hated that, and still do.

Enter the BCS, a private entity sponsoring and crowning a champion. They used the AP in their calculations until it became obvious that regional bias and concensus rendered data unusable. They got rid of it in favor of using six computer models, throwing out the high and low for each team, not perfect but a better representation of numbers that actually have validity.

The BCS guarantees money through profit sharing...guarantees

Pre season rankings - They were never a huge part of the equation until the BCS was initiated. Now, find yourself outside the top 25 and you might as well forget it. They WILL NEVER GO AWAY, they sell, like it or not. The only thing that would make them less relevent would be an NCAA sanction that precludes them from use early in the season. Good luck with that.

Then of course you have those things that involve tradition dating back nearly a century, bowl games. It's a big hurdle not easily overcome. Old turds are stubborn about anything that detracts from their importance, hell I'm surprised they locked in for as long as they did with the BCS.

Don't forget the BCS members are contractually obligated.

Show me a solution that addresses these issues and results in a better system, sans the touchy, feely fairness whining that is associated with it. Quite frankly, it serves as nothing more than mental masturbation imo.
Ahh man, you had to bring it back haha :D

The computer rankings/rankings used in the BCS may have some "validity", I mean, it is obvious that Texas & Alabama are deserving teams, but at the same time, isn't TCU and Cincinnati pretty deserving too? Boise? This is my problem, you can't solve 'who is best' by looking at schedules and predicting who would win. The best way would be to play the games on the field.

Agreed about pre-season rankings. Definitely need to go... but won't. Too much fun for media types and fans before the season starts. But really hurts alot of teams during the season who weren't as "sexy" before the season.

One thing that I HATE about the BCS is the "contractually obligated" crap. If that is the way the sport/entity wants to determine a champion, fine. But taking Utah's vote away after last season because they felt they were the best team, is just not right IMO.

Tradition is probably the biggest hurdle. Tradition here also means money. The BCS and the BCS conferences make a killing. Therefore it would be crazy for them to change something that they profit so much from. This is a serious problem for us playoff-seekers.

I only bring it up again because every stinking thread is mired with whinning about a play-off and yet there are so many obstacles to it that it literally is appearing as close to impossible as one thing could be.

I'd prefer to just move on and accept it, it's a lot better than splits and the AP crap.

agreed. Any change would be very complicated. But to say that the BCS and BCS universities don't employ bright people who could sort the whole thing out is very disingenuous.

True, it is better than its predecessor, but why be satisfied? Can't we try and make it even better?

the more i've thought about this i've realized these meaningless bowl games aren't going anywhere anytime fast. i just wish an 8 team playoff could take place around the end of november/early december so we could have a true champion, still have the bowls that everybody "loves" and get the players a little break for exams and what not...i don't know, maybe start the season a little earlier to accomodate that?
