Nice athlete for OSU to pick up.
OSU gets commitment from QB Reed
Verlon Reed, a dual-threat quarterback from Columbus Marion-Franklin High School, committed to Ohio State this morning.

Reed said he chose OSU over Toledo and Bowling Green. He was blown away on his official visit last weekend.

"It's everything I expected, it's a home inside a home," he said of the feeling he had on his visit. "It's a dream come true, something I wanted to do my whole life."

Rivals.com rates Reed as a three-star player, rated the No. 61 prospect in Ohio. The Buckeyes already have a quarterback in their 2010 class, Taylor Graham of Wheaton, Ill.

Last season, Reed led the Red Devils to an 11-3 record and a berth in the Division II state semifinals. He rushed for 1,395 yards and 19 TDs and passed for 1,548 yards and 18 TDs.

There has been some speculation that Reed (6-2, 185) might switch positions in college, but he said OSU coaches have told him he will get a legitimate shot at quarterback.

"I like competition, I don't want anything given to me," he said.

Reed is the 15th member of the 2010 class, which is expected to number 20 by signing day.

Love this get! Although he's obviously not highly regarded, I think he will turn into a very good player with better coaching, training program and being able to find a natural position whether that's at QB or somewhere else.

This is a good pick up. The guy is a great athlete from what i've seen and even if he's not @ QB should earn a spot somewhere on the field

What position will he play at OSU ?

Coaches have said he will have a legit shot at QB, and I think that's where he'll stay.

I can see him as a big time safety for State.
The times I watched him he looked good.
Taylor Graham should be a stud if he can stay away from the injury bug.

A nice pickup. He's one of those guys who would appear to be solid -- and may possibly be a diamond in the rough.

I think he stays at QB for the time being. Let's face it: Ohio State doesn't have great QB depth right now and adding two more is not a bad idea. You have no idea what might happen down the road, and there's no reason you shouldn't redshirt both Graham and Reed, giving them an extra year to develop. Guiton will have the redshirt off next year, so there will be 3 QBs available.

If the kid wants to play QB, why wouldn't they let him try? Good thing Troy Smith stuck with it, huh?
  • OneBuckeye
They will see what position he'll play when he gets to campus, but he will have an opportunity at QB.
  • SQ_Crazies
    ^Really, are you sure?
  • darbypitcher22
He'll probably get a shot; how extensive that shot will be, who knows, with Guiton in the fold
  • thedynasty1998
What would make anyone think he won't get a shot at QB? He's behind Guiton, Bauserman and another incoming freshman. It's not that ridiculous for him to think he can beat those guys out.

    Junior season highlights - http://blip.tv/file/2363966/

As a senior passed for over 1500 yards with 18 touchdowns. Also ran for 1350 yards and 18 touchdowns.

He'll get a shot at QB but he'll end up being a quality safety for OSU.

Reed said he chose OSU over Toledo and Bowling Green.
Yeah, that was a tough call. Toledo, Bowling Green....or Ohio State. hmmmmmmm....:dodgy:

    LOL no kidding.

He is the type of athlete you cannot let go somewhere else though. Tressel watched him late in the season and was impressed by his versatility.

But OSU may possibly bring in two very good QB's next season in Miller and Jones.

I think he could add a little more speed, but he does seem to throw a very nice ball, even when he's scrambling. Add in the fact that he's tall and athletic enough to switch positions if QB doesn't pan out, I'd say this is a solid get for OSU.

From watching that video, it doesn't look like he has the arm to be a big time QB. Good athlete though.

Cleveland Buck, you are totally wrong.

Here is Verlon Reed in the Division II State-Semi game - http://blip.tv/file/2904787/

The eventually state champs Winton Woods ended up running away with this one but it sure was exciting watching how Reed almost single handling kept Marion-Franklin in the game early on. He finished this game with 204 yards rushing, 213 passing, and 5 total touchdowns (3 rushing & 2 passing). His touchdown runs were of 74, 42, and 33 yards.

Watching him in that video reminded me of another #10 who played QB at OSU
  • 77Legend
Many are sleeping on Verlon, but he will be a good QB for OSU.
  • OneBuckeye
Those highlights against Winton Woods are impressive. I hope we land Jones and Miller next year and he moves to safety or WR. I think he will find his place at OSU.

That game against WW sealed a scholarship offer for Reed.
