They're a national brand but it would limit them to the midwest? That doesn't make any sense. Pick one or the other.

If it was about cash, the Big Ten is their best bet. They aren't going to get into the SEC, so the Big Ten is their next option. The Big Ten stood there with open arms and ND didn't budge.

Once upon a time, Notre Dame wanted to join the Big Ten and the conference didn't budge. FWIW, I would like to see ND in the B1G.

Losing their independent status would shrink the footprint and make them into more of a regional program. You know how everyone from the B1G was getting excited about adding Rutgers so the footprint would grow? Why would Notre Dame want to limit itself to the current B1G region? I don't really see the BTN allowing them to keep their deal with NBC and I don't see the BTN being picked up around the entire country. Does that make more sense?
  • Midstate01
Btn isn't picked up around the country? I have it on time warner here in Hawaii. Also had it in Mississippi. I assumed it was nationwide because of that.

I assume you have to have a sports package to get it right? Inside the B1G's region its included on basic cable I believe.
  • Midstate01
No but I do have the largest regular package. So that is likely why.

    It's exactly what you said.

National brand and the B1G would be limiting. What part of that isn't "ND - too big for the B1G"?

Not shocked you try to deny something you said.

With that aspect, then ANY conference is too limiting.

Name any other conference or program trying to narrow its reach. There was interest among B1G fans wanting Rutgers so it could expand its footprint. Why do you think ND should want to become a less visible program? If the B1G fit what ND wanted, they would have joined 20 years ago, or 10 years ago, or 2 years ago or any other time there were talks. I blame Fielding Yost for your narrow view.

It does...but MEANINGFUL games on ND's schedule would quickly get picked up by ESPN's and ABC's of the world...

The way their schedule is now is a bunch of shit competition and USC. At least in the BTN they'd have Michigan, OSU's, Penn States, etc...

(I know they played Michigan last year).

You think? Any conference is more limiting that independence. That is a difficult concept?

They play Michigan every year. As well as Michigan State.

The issue is the TV deal. Literally every game ND plays is on National TV right now. Joining a conference ruins that.

They play what looks to be a pretty difficult schedule this season. USC...Probably preseason #1, returning almost everybody. Do you really consider Oklahoma "shit" competition? Michigan, Michigan State, Stanford, Miami(FL)...granted Miami isn't what they used to be but....it's not like the schedule is USC and then just shit.

Their past few years have been a joke. I do agree that this years schedule is solid. They'll also have a comparable/worse record this year than in years past. Book it!

So you are saying they don't want to join the B1G because it will narrow their reach. In other words they are bigger than the B1G. Isn't that what I said?

Actually, according to the panel on ESPNU's College Football Live today, ND will play arguably the toughest schedule in the country this season...just sayin'

no, I take you saying they are too big to mean they are too good for the big ten. I'm not saying that.

I'll disagree about the past few schedules being a joke. Not murderer's row but not the slate of cream puffs you're making it out to be. Also, I took your "the way their schedule is right now...." statement literally as in you saying this upcoming schedule was a joke. At least we agree that the 2012 schedule looks difficult.

I kind of do mean that. Won't they make more money in the B1G than independent? If so, what does their reach matter?

They make plenty of money as is.

So it's not about money? Then you are saying they are too good for the B1G.
