MAC Bowl Games

  • believer
So far the MAC is 3-1 in its 5 bowl game appearances.

Western Michigan gave Purdue all it could handle....nuff said. ;)

Northern Illinois should beat Arkansas State on January 8th.

This has to be the best post season performance by the MAC in conference history. Anyone disagree?

how can we--the record speaks for itself

The MAC is a decent conference. Its probably better than the Big East.

They have played 0 Sun Belt teams thus far. Only their last one is against them.
  • Little Danny
It certainly is their best in recent memory and I would not be surprised if it is their best ever. Here are the results from the past eight years:

    2003- 2-0
    2004- 2-3
    2005- 1-1
    2006- 1-3
    2007- 0-3
    2008- 0-5
    2009- 1-4
    2010- 2-2

    Sigh...so unbelievably full of fail...

I don't think anyone was saying anything like that the MAC was the shit in the USA or that they've earned elite status because they've won three of their first four bowls. Just that they're having as successful of a postseason as they've ever had. Usually we're getting rolled by the WAC, Sun Belt, etc. teams and looking like a minor league conference compared to the other minor league ones. This year, we're looking like an actual competitive conference that's not 20 points inferior to anyone we're playing.

Not as good as about 10 yrs ago. I remember a few years when Marshall and either BG or Toledo were beating some pretty solid teams. Definitely the best year since Marshall left though.

It's kind of a quality vs. quantity thing. Back when Marshall was in the league, the teams were definitely better at the top and more dangerous opponents. But there were fewer bowls, so only 2 or maybe 3 would ever play in bowls during any given season. I remember OU had a couple years where they finished second to Marshall in the East with good teams and didn't make bowls. Now, 4-5 teams get the opportunity. They might not be as good as the teams back then, but are getting the opportunities and (FINALLY!) are taking advantage of them.

Good for the MAC. Im tired of people who act like its the worst conference in college football.

    Precisely.

The MAC is in no way - obviously - an elite conference but this year the conference can easily claim some reps for competing with the MWC, WAC, Sun Belt....and considering how Western Michigan was the worst MAC team to earn a bowl bid, they gave Purdue from the formerly elite BIG a run for their money. The Boilermakers should have waxed WM simply because it was a MAC vs. BIG match-up.

All I'm saying is that for at least THIS season, the MAC isn't the post-season bottom-feeder.

Well in fairness to them, the past couple years you could make that case

Yeah, from 2007-2010 (roughly) it didn't take much to make a compelling case that they were the worst.

Like believer said, they're not world beaters, but after the past 5 or so years it's a marked improvement.

The only people that believe that are Big East fans.

Yeah. In Little Danny's post breaking down their bowl record by year, they went 1-12 from 2007-9 before being 2-2 last year. 1-12 over three years is beyond sad to the point where it makes Darby's make-out record look acceptable.

    This post is just dumb.

Hell, beating ACC and Big East opponents might be less impressive than beating MWC and WAC opponents...

Unless you count the Sun Belt, in-which half its teams became D-1 less than 5 years ago, the MAC has been the worst recently. Not only have their top teams not been all that impressive, their bottom feeders have been the absolute pits.

    Akron 2011
    Akron and Buffalo 2010
    Eastern Michigan and Miami 2009
    Miami 2008
    Northern Illinois 2007

They have had a team go 0-12 or 1-11 in the last 5 years and three out of five years they have had 3 or 4 teams with 10 or more losses.

Akron has 3 wins against FBS opponents in the last 3 years. Right now they are the worst FBS program.

    Memphis says hello.

And I don't believe that Akron's beat 3 FBS teams. They have at least 3 wins, but I know one of them was against FCS competition.

Lol at you calling his post dumb. Who in the WAC is better than anyone in the Big East or ACC? and other than TCU and Boise, who in the MWC could even come close to competing in either conference?

    I dunno about that one.

Definitely the best showing the MAC has had in bowls that I can remember though, regardless of the opponents.

Those year by year records are actually better than what my guess would have been.
Didn't they lose 11 or 12 consecutive bowl games at one point?

Glad to see the MAC having some success in bowls for once.

I'm pretty sure in 2009 they lost the first 4 before LeFevour scraped out a CMU GMAC bowl win in January, so with 2007-08 included there's your 12

The bottom half of the Big East and the ACC could not win the MWC. They might finish in the top 4. I'll give you the WAC.
  • Azubuike24
Memphis has 5 wins in 3 years. Akron has 5 wins in 3 years. Akron has beaten Buffalo, Kent State and Eastern Michigan. Their other 2 wins were against FCS teams.

What's worse is, Akron lost to Syracuse in 2009 (last in the Big East), Indiana in 2010 (last in the Big Ten).

You are right about Memphis though, although they actually played some close games this year. Akron got pounded almost every game.

The bottom of the BE is better than the bottom of the ACC. The BE biggest problem is that they're middle heavy.
