BigAppleBuckeyeWhy do college and pro football follow similar time parameters (four 15-minute quarters), but college and pro hoops play by different standards (two 20-minutes halves vs. four 12-minute quarters)? Just wondering the origin of this. Anyone?

chicago510No idea, but I also find that strange (especially since HS basketball also plays quarters).

krambmanPlaying halves in college has always seemed odd to me, but I think I like it better than quarters. No idea why it's done this way though.

Tobias FünkeBasketball was originally in halves, I believe. Two 15-minute halves and a five-minute halftime.

It also seems to odd to me that high school uses halves for determing the free throw bonus. The other levels uses however they are divided to determine the bonus.krambman;1001205 wrote:Playing halves in college has always seemed odd to me, but I think I like it better than quarters. SonofanumpI think that TV is more prevalent in NBA, so an extra long break between the quarters. I think NCAA will extend timeouts for TV games.
Timing is a little different for football, clock stops on first down in NCAA, but restarts after ball is brought back inbounds. -

I'm not positive on the minutes, but when Naismith created the game it was played it in 2 halves. -

[h=2]There's no magical reason why college basketball has halves instead of quarters; just keeping tradition of way it's been done.

TiernanIts probably so LeBron can only screw up one quarter instead of a whole half. I was out of town during the Duke game but I hope folks gave him a rash of shit at the Schott when he pranced in.
