Report: Zook is gone

  • gorocks99
No surprise, it's just a matter of time until it's official IMO: http://www.footballrumormill.com/2011/11/27/illinois-fires-ron-zook-sunseri-wilson-early-names/

Leaders division will have at least three new coaches next year (OSU, PSU, Illinois). Be interesting to see who the Illini go with.

As you said, this is not surprising at all.

If they would have went 9-3 this year, then he'd still be around. However, going 6-0 then ending 0-6 just won't cut it.
  • gerb131
They quit on him. They got handled by Minny yesterday.
  • jordo212000
This was a well deserved firing. It's about time.
  • Fly4Fun
Probably a year or two too late... but at least they finally pulled the trigger.
  • dwccrew
Question is where does Zook go from here? He isn't a head coach, should be an assistant somewhere.

I think a 3rd tier AQ School would. Ole Miss? Washington State? Somewhere like that would because it would actually be a slight improvement to go 6-6/7-5 every year.

Butch Davis would be a good fit for Illinois, but I don't know if any school would touch him right now.

    What about leach at Illinois?

He'll find a job in the SEC where you don't have to play by the rules.

He's already been there, done that and failed.

Turner Gill got sacked by Kansas too. Turns out that maybe going 20-30 in the MAC doesn't qualify you for a BCS job.

Kansas would be a great fit for Leach in my opinion.

Kevin Sumlin to Illinois? CBSChicago.com sports blogger says he hears it's imminent: http://twitter.com/#!/wischlist/status/144168868653445120

Would be a great hire for the Illini.
  • dave
Surprised he wouldn't wait for a better spot.
  • jordo212000
Props to Illinois if they pull that off

I dunno, I think he can win immediately at Illinois. It's not really a rebuilding situation, just a "need better coaching" situation.
  • Little Danny
Sumlin had the chance for better gigs (Texas A&M, Arizona State). He is from Indianapolis--- maybe he just wanted to come back close to home.

feldman said the sumlin to illinois rumor wasn't true
