sleeper, I agree 100%...one of the biggest disappointments in the B1G over the last decade
  • Fab1b
Cause everyone was and is hanging form Ferentz's nuts!
  • krambman
And in that same time Kirk Ferentz was B1G co-champs twice with Iowa and won COY three times.

I understand that with as dominant as Ohio State was it was expected for them to do what they did, but it's almost incomprehensible that he dominated the conference for a decade unlike almost anyone in the past four decades, and never was named COY.

Phil Jackson and Mike Brown have the same # of COY awards.

    Hope this helps.

That is crazy. In fairness, Mike Brown deserved the COY he got, but Jackson should have more than one. Although I'm sure when Phil Jackson puts on his 10 championship rings and one championship toe ring (plus two championship rings as a player) he doesn't mind only having one COY trophy on the shelf.

Last time I checked, the SEC gives out a COY award.

Kinda like how, for a few years, it seemed the NBA MVP award was essentially given to the best player not named Michael Jordan. And then Jordan's Bulls would play that player's team in the finals. And destroy them.

COY is almost never given to the league favorite because he's expected to win the championship. Tress was pre-season league favorite or co-favorite 7 out of 10 years.

Jerry Sandusky won National Asst Coach of the Year in '86 and '99. Hope that doesn't help at all.

Didn't he win 7 B1G titles? Unless you are excluding last year, in which you'd have to excluse the BCS bowl win. Regardless, pretty incredible that Tressel never won, especially in 2002 when OSU came out of no where to win the NC.

    B1G titles: 02, 05, 06, 07, 08, 09, 10 (vacated)

    BCS wins: 02, 03, 05, 09, 10 (vacated)

NC appearances: 02 (win), 06 (loss), 07 (loss)

Pretty incredible stats for only 10 years

I wanna believe that the reason for this is because at Ohio State things like this are expected...

Somewhere like Iowa City, its really not.

I think that is probably the most common reasoning, but it seems to me that after winning coach of the year once or twice, the expectations would have been high enough at Iowa that Ferentz would have had to do more to earn the award. I guess his consistent underachieving in his non-COY seasons helped his chances when he did have a good season.

This. Everyone always talked about how Ferentz was really the best coach in the Big Ten, he just didn't have the talent OSU did. If he was really that great of a coach, he should have won the conference more than twice.

And managed to not get shellacked by USC in the Orange Bowl in '02
