Kirk Herbstreit: The Face of College Football

  Great read in a multiple-part series. I found this portion particularly interesting:
  

  But Herbstreit, the son of a coach, seems to still harbor coaching dreams as well.
  "If I left (the show) I would want to go coach," Herbstreit says, "I'd want to be a high school coach at a program where it really mattered or I've talked with Urban (Meyer) about if he gets back into coaching being a quarterbacks coach and eventually an offensive coordinator for him."
  
  Asked if he's serious, Herbstreit responds, "Oh, yeah, for sure. At this point, at my age, it's tougher probably to imagine doing that just because I've elevated myself to a point in my career where it's hard to imagine starting over, but I'm not closing that door. I'll keep doing this (ESPN College Gameday) as long as they'll have me, but if a big time college coach asked me to be his quarterbacks coach and eventually be his offensive coordinator, it would be an interesting situation to deal with."
  
  Herbstreit's father, Jim, acknowledges the two have discussed a coaching future for Kirk. "I've heard him say that and I have no doubt that he's qualified. I'm not sure I'd choose that future for him, but I think he'd be very good at it. I'm sure we'd sit down at some point and talk about it. Kirk's made such outstanding decisions in his life so far that I think he'd make a good one about that too."
  
  Later Herbstreit's best friend, Deron Brown, is asked if he could see Herbstreit back coaching quarterbacks at their alma mater one day. "I'm not touching that," he says, "but I'll tell you this, I hope Urban Meyer takes the job at Ohio State."

  
  
  Thoughts? Sounds like a good deal to me.

  Jim Tressel started out as a QB's coach and he was just "ok" in college. Ended up being a pretty good football coach.
  
  Everyone has to start out somewhere. I'm not saying Herbie would be a good coach or not, but we may find out.

  I'd take Herbie over what we have now at O coordinator.

  There's no correlation at all between how good a coach someone is and how good a player they were or weren't. Knowing how a player can be successful (and transferring that knowledge) and having the tools to do it themselves are separate issues.

  Very true. A lot of very respected coaches were no-name players. A lot of flops were great players. There's no real correlation between how good someone was on the field and how good they'll be on the sidelines.
  
  Now, the "no coaching experience" thing would make me question giving him any job of importance immediately, but how he performed as a player means nothing as far as that goes.

  Vrabel didn't have coaching experience, and everyone loved that hire.
  
  Plus Herbie can't be worse than Tressel's puppet from Youngstown who now serves that role.

  this, this, and this. If Meyer signs on to be our coach, I don't care who else tags along. I'll trust his judgement.

  If Herbie can't handle the pressure of being an announcer in Columbus, how will he hand the pressure of being a coach?

  Say Herbie somehow managed to take the gig, would ESPN then be slobbering all over OSU? Would the persecution be officially ended from ESPN sans Mark May? LOL

  Why would they care about Herbstreit, anymore, if he's a part of the OSU staff? I don't think a thing would change...except there wouldn't be a mannequin, faux-tan, golden-highlights and frosted tipped commentator adding to the commentary. :laugh:

  Personally I think they'd be all over OSU if Meyer becomes the coach. They love Urban.
