2006 Mich/OSU Hype V.S. 2011 LSU/AL Hype

  • like_that
Which game do you think has more hype? I know we have a lot of OSU/Mich fans, so the poll might be skewed.

I am not a fan of any of the 4 teams, but I just don't feel the hype of the LSU/AL game as much as I felt the hype for the Mich/OSU game. LSU and Alabama are both better teams than the 2006 Michigan and Ohio State teams in my opinion. When it comes down to it, there is just no better rivalry in any sport than the OSU/Michigan football rivalry, especially when both teams are undefeated.

Its been pretty even, but alot of people say UM/OSU. It is kinda getting old seeing all day on the tv and computer LSU/bama this, lsu/bama that. I think LSU and Bama are clearly better than the 06 teams, easily.
This has been talked about on another topic tho.
I dont think this game will be close no matter who wins, unlike the OSU/UM game.

OSU/UM because it was the final game of the season. The winner was going to the NC, the LSU/AL game is just for a team to keep title hopes alive.

You are probably right, but after that game quite a few people thought they were both great teams. Once they were both exposed in bowl games it became obvious they weren't. A lot of people didn't give Florida a chance. By the end of this season we may be saying the same thing about LSU and/or Bama.

Also, OSU/UM is a big rivalry game EVERY year, which adds to the hype.

OSU/UM was 10x the guy this will ever be, book it.

this...also, the game matched the hype, as I hope tomorrow's game will

Which one had bigger implications? Michigan/OSU

Which one has been hyped more by the media? Bama/LSU.

Like I said earlier, I don't remember ESPN going All Access or w/e on Lloyd Carr and Jim Tressel a week before the game. ESPN has tried to make it seem bigger than what it actually is. Don't get me wrong it's a big game. However, it's too early in the season to have the same lasting affect as the Michigan/OSU Game.

Going into the game, and I mean purely going into the game (not what we found out afterwards), the OSU/UM game was bigger.

    1. Ohio State had beaten #2 Texas already and Michigan destroyed #2 ND, and they were the only unbeaten teams left. These were without a doubt the 2 best teams in the country. Can't say that just yet with LSU/AL because of unbeaten Okie St. and Stanford.

    2. Both teams had great defenses AND great offenses. Both teams in the LSU/AL game have fantastic defenses but only decent at best offenses (Trent Richardson is awesome and Jordan Jefferson brings a good dynamic but let's be honest, these offenses aren't anywhere near OSU or UM in '06).

    3. Direct national championship implications. For all we know, the winner of this game could lose in the SEC title game and both teams will be out of the championship hunt.

    4. It was the OSU/UM rivalry. Enough said.

This.....because the OSU/Michigan game is at the end of the season, everyone knew it was for all the marbles. Another example of it's sometimes when you lose in college football that matters. An early one loss team has a far better bowl picture than a late one loss team.

It's hard for me to say because I'm a Buckeye fan and I live in Ohio, so I got hype locally as well as nationally from that game, but in my memory of the national hype alone that game had more hype.

OSU/Michigan is a much bigger rivalry that Alabama/LSU is.
OSU/Michigan was the final game of the season for both teams and the winner was the only undefeated BCS team and was guaranteed a spot in the title game, whereas this year the winner will be one of three undefeated BCS teams and will only be in the driver's seat to get to the title game.
LSU and Alabama have only occupied the top two spots in the poll for three weeks leading up to the game. OSU and Michigan occupied the top two spots for five weeks leading up to the game (ESPN was doing a second-by-second countdown for two weeks leading up to it).

I do think that ESPN may be hyping this game up more than they did five years ago, but I also think that the interest for the average fan nationally isn't as great (probably because of the tradition and end-of-season implications of the OSU/Michigan game). I also think that whereas OSU was definitely the favorite in 2006, I think that this game appears more evenly matched going in, even though I doubt the game will be as close when it's all said-and-done.

The SEC Network is a syndication package featuring college football and basketball events from the Southeastern Conference. The package is owned and operated by ESPN Regional Television
...and this is why ESPN is hyping the game more than it did the OSU/tsun game of '06 ;)

I keep hearing people say this, but I'm pretty sure the ESPN's contract with the B1G is worth almost as much, if not more, than their contract with the SEC.

ESPN had a ticking countdown to the OSU/UM game a week before the game occurred lol.

I was just talking about this: I firmly believe the '06 got more hype, especially by ESPN. Every day there was a countdown clock ticking down the game, and virtually every day that week Sportscenter kicked off its show from Columbus. This has not been the case this year with Bama-LSU.

For the record, Florida whipped our ass that horrible night in '07. That being said, I would have loved to see our team play before the whole Troy Smith-Gonzo drama that split the team before that game. Not saying we would have won, but that group of players on the field that not was NOT Ohio State, at least not the team that we saw all year.

If Ohio State played Florida 10 times, OSU wins 8 of them. Book it.

"OSU/Michigan is a much bigger rivalry that Alabama/LSU is."

Was. It isnt now. Bama and LSU at least have close games and they are both good, while UM hasnt been relevant in 5 years, and people dont get as excited as years ago. Plus, with Saban being the ex LSU coach and winning titles at both schools and SEC football being hands down the best............The Bama/LSU game is bigger every year. But being up north, people dont see that I guess. Up until 2006, I would have to say OSU/UM was the biggest rival in "all" sports........but now its meh.

    Same.

As for this game being the game of the century.....it seems like we have this discussion every year. These are two good teams, but nothing special sets them apart from other #1 vs #2 matchups over the last ten years.

cgw is pretty much the biggest idiot known to man.
  • vball10set
I would think 'Bama's biggest rival is still Auburn, and as far as LSU is concerned, I really don't know who'd there biggest rival would be...anyway, even though there haven't been any ramifications on a national level for OSU/tsun, it's still considered one of the biggest rivalries in all of sports--period.
