Surely you're not comparing the circumstances surrounding Tressels departure to the circumstances that would surround Fickell if he were to win out this year?Zoltan;964486 wrote:They fired Tressel, so I think it would be pretty easy to just not retain Luke. The bottom line is Urban Meyer, maybe the best CFB coach alive is available. I think he is the next coach, regardless of what Luke does this year. -
dwccrewI just don't get how anyone can give Fickell credit for what the team is doing. They are doing it in spite of Fickell. Talent is winning these games, not coaching. If they were well-coached they could POSSIBLY be undefeated. All 3 losses were winnable games, but coaching lost those 3 games with bad playcalling, wrong personnel in the game and lack of ability to make adjustments.
People who believe Fickell is leading this team to victory don't know much about football. -

My bad. I thought you were having a serious conversation and not just trolling. All three of your posts were purposeful garbage. Thx for wasting my time. -

I think you took my posts in an offensive manner whereas I was merely venting frustration over losing Clarett so early in his career. I think Rich Rod showed that just showing up doesn't get you wins in the B1G. I'm sure there have been mistakes made, but you have to give Fickell some credit.dwccrew;964624 wrote:I just don't get how anyone can give Fickell credit for what the team is doing. I think IF he wins out he should get a lot of credit. It's not like he's had his playmakers all year...and sorting thru the QB situation and arriving at Miller in time for opening game is not a no- brainer decision. Who knows what the freshman showed early on? We still don't have a passing game that approaches what Pryor could do, but the team is winning and getting better every week. If that continues and he wins out, he gets an A+ in my book, and it becomes Urban who?I just don't get how anyone can give Fickell credit for what the team is doing. They are doing it in spite of Fickell. -

Your view of yourself or otherwise incredulous denial is irrelevant. -
sirclovisLuke Fickell is not a good coach for one reason.... Playing Joe Bauserman

Not defending Rich Rod at all, but he didn't have near the talent Ohio State has. Obviously we'll never know, but I have no doubt that UM would have been significantly better that year if Llllloyd had still been the coach.dwccrew;966081 wrote:Not defending Rich Rod at all, but he didn't have near the talent Ohio State has.
Don't you think Fickell might deserve some credit for them being one of the best defenses?dwccrew;966081 wrote:OSU's defense is one of the best in the nation.
They have a loooooong way to go yet, but if we play in the B1G championship game that will be quite a accomplishment with all the adversity this team has faced IMHO. -

I can give him partial credit, but this defense was loaded from last season into this season. He inherited a great defense, he didn't build it. Unfortunately for Fickell, he was never given a chance to prove himself a good HC before getting the OSU job and to retain the OSU job, you have to have a HC resume. He doesn't, which is why I think he is gone after the season no matter what. I think they elevated him to HC because they knew it'd be easy to get rid of him if they chose to do so.FatHobbit;966252 wrote:Obviously we'll never know, but I have no doubt that UM would have been significantly better that year if Llllloyd had still been the coach.

He didn't build the defense as the assistant DC and head defensive recruiter?dwccrew;966474 wrote:I can give him partial credit, but this defense was loaded from last season into this season. He inherited a great defense, he didn't build it. -

This is why I gave him PARTIAL credit. ASSISTANT defensive coordinator. Did I say the guy was a total screwup? I just don't think he can be head coach at a school like Ohio State yet. He has no offensive strategies and looks like a deer in headlights when the team faces adversity. He has won on talent alone. Let's just look at his resume so far:LJ;966490 wrote:He didn't build the defense as the assistant DC and head defensive recruiter?
Akron: I could have coached the team to a win there
Toledo: Damn near, and probably should have, lost to a MAC team
Miami (FL): Lost to a team that was inferior (talent wise) Offense was an embarassment, left TO's on the board, pathetic display of coaching
Colorado: They are garbage
MSU: Again, another pathetic offensive performance. Defense did play lights out though, so I give him some credit for that. But no adjustments were made on offense even after MSU had figured out the snap count.
Nebraska: Total coaching meltdown, not just by Fickell. How do you blow that lead late in the 3rd quarter when you have been controlling the game?
Illinois: Another outstanding defensive performance which I'll give Fickell credit for, but 1 of 4 all day passing? Throw a screen or slant or something.
Wisky: All around a great performance, but the win I give credit to Braxton Miller for finding the receiver before I give the win to Fickell.
Indiana: Luckily it was Indiana, otherwise OSU gets embarrassed. Every facet of this game was shit.
Am I being critical of Fickell? Yes. But I just don't see him being ready for this job yet. -
HitsRusI don't disagree with all you have written, but you can't downgrade the victories and maximize the defeats.
Also, the season isn't over, and what I and others are saying is that if he can continue to win...which means he has to win BIG games...then he desrves the job. That if still a big IF. Beating PSU, Michigan and winning a B1G championship would be huge. Winning a bowl game would be huge. How do you not give him the job?...especially given the extraordinary adversity he had/has to deal with. Personally, I think just getting to the Championship game (Which still means beating Purdue, PSU and Michigan) and winning a bowl game would be enough. -

What you say, for the most part, is true. I don't really think I have downgraded the victories, I'm downplaying how much Fickell had to do with those victories.HitsRus;967008 wrote:I don't disagree with all you have written, but you can't downgrade the victories and maximize the defeats.

I think he is a heck of a DC. I don't care much for him as a HC though.
I'd also like to add, and I think most would agree, that this is a very down year in the B1G. So it makes it a little easier on a new coach to coach in his first season. -

Kirk Ferentz has coached Iowa to the same record against the same down B1G.
