Absolutely no reason Boise should've been leapfrogged by Stanford.

I disagree. Boise's performance was lackluster against an Air Force team who has been lit up. Stanford on the other hand, crushed a Washington team who had some momentum coming in.

Also, gotta figure Boise is going to be the last in-line of the unbeaten teams. However, Oklahoma and Wisconsin losing was huge for them. They can now look at Stanford having to beat USC, Notre Dame and Oregon along with the Pac-12 title game to win out, and Oklahoma State hosting K-State, going to Texas Tech and Bedlam against Oklahoma. Clemson and K-State, if they somehow win out, would also jump Boise, but Clemson still has to go to Georgia Tech and South Carolina, and likely get Virginia Tech in the ACC Title Game. K-State probably loses next week.

Stanford hasn't played anybody. I don't consider Washington anybody.

Washington is better than anyone on Boise's schedule all year. I'm a fan of Boise, don't get me wrong, but they have beaten Georgia, that's it. Toledo and Tulsa are "decent" wins, but Fresno State and Nevada are not that good, Colorado State is very bad and Air Force has their worst team in 5 years.
  • Mulva
Georgia is a better win than Washington (especially "neutral field" vs. home game), and what is Stanford's 2nd best win? UCLA?

Agree it's ridiculous that they jumped Boise State. If any team should have it would be Clemson.

They leap frogged Boise for one reason and one reason alone: Andrew Luck's Heisman campaign.

Good to seee an Ohio team representing in the top 25. :)

I am not too worried. IF (and it is a HUGE HUGE if) Clemson wins out, beating GT, South Carolina, and a presumably top 20 VT again, I think we will jump them without any problem.

Not that the AP poll matters anyway (unless there's another split title), but they are just catching up with the coaches, who already had Stanford above Boise State. Both Stanford and Oklahoma State extended their points lead significantly over Boise this week.

The Harris Poll also took notice of Stanford this week, as they went from about 50 points behind Boise to over 100 points ahead of them. Oklahoma State also pulled further away from Boise.

I thought this might be the year that Boise could find itself beating out a BCS team if there were multiple undefeateds (obviously not a team from the SEC). Clearly it isn't going to happen. Clemson will jump them soon enough if they keep winning. You simply can't max out your schedule in the first week and expect to sustain any recognition. You don't have to play a great team every week, but you have to have some challenges.

Whether you want to acknowledge Washington or not, Stanford just demolished a ranked team by 40+. Boise has had some ho-hum wins over Georgia (good win, but 14 points doesn't look nearly as good), Nevada, and Air Force. Stanford will still have to earn its keep with by winning out over quality opponents while Boise can continue to mail it in and take the reward that comes with that (BCS game, no title game).

i still dont get why boise gets ranked so high in the first place. they get a high ranking and proceed to get jumped by at least 3-4 teams without losing a game

They were ranked before Stanford wumped em.

Rankings aren't worth the paper they're printed on.

Anyone who watched college football knew teams like Washington and Illinois were frauds. Penn State is probably up there too, I think they're exactly even with Ohio State.

Just curious if you saw that UC is one of three schools (Michigan, Wisconsin, and UC) who is top 25 in Football, Basketball and Research Funding. Pretty well-rounded if you ask me, any BCS conference would lucky to have them Hint Hint cough wink, 100 dollar handshake.

Maybe not for schools like Notre Dame, OSU or PSU; but top 25 rankings are important for most college football programs. Getting into the top 25 means you are more likely to get your game highlights on ESPN, mentioned in the paper, etc. This is true not just for the Boise State's, Houston's and UC's of the worlds, but is also true for teams like Illinois, Missouri, Texas Tech, Kansas State, etc. Getting this exposure helps those schools in recruiting and getting some of the donors to open up the checkbook.

I am a Penn State fan, but I lean towards your statement on them here. They have a Top 10 worthy defense and a great running back. What scares me is that they will keep playing Bolden and he is terrible. If they put McGloin in and let him play 4 quarters the rest of the way, I think they will win 10 games. If they keep playing Bolden, they may finish up 1-3. Nebraska, @OSU and @Wisconsin is a tough finish.

That is a pretty rough finish.

Did I say they weren't important? No.

Top 25 polls have no weight in determining how good a team is. None. Especially in this day and age of teams playing weaker schedules.

    I completely agree.
