He just hit another. Absolutely going off. That one in transition...

Murray State on a roll now.

SEMO is cold from the floor this half.

Cal may have had the most talent over the last few years. Matta has had top 5 talent. Matta has been to 1 FF and got a Ron Lewis 120495 footer to get there. If you are unimpressed with what Cal has done, Im THOROUGHLY unimpressed with what Thad has done.

Sadly I somewhat agree. Last year I thought Kentucky was the worst matchup for Ohio State and if they had not met up with Kentucky at some point last year they would have been champs IMO. The year before Tennessee was just a bad matchup with their bigs, but you have to be able to adjust to bad matchups and both years they were just short of overcoming them. We'll see what happens this year. They need at least a final four or else they'll start getting a reputation of being chokers in the tournament, whether it's fair or not.

Also not to mention a blatantly disregarded Greg Oden full neslon on Xavier's Justin Cage, which left Cage in a near coma and the Buckeyes possession of the ball. To this day, one of the worst non-calls I've ever seen -- enough so that it's even mentioned in Wikipedia's entry for the "2007 NCAA Tournament" as one of that year's biggest game-changing moments.

Matta deserved a call after the way his team was raped by the officials in the 2003-2004 regional final versus duke.....................

."It didn't help when Anthony Myles, the Musketeers' best inside player, fouled out with 12{ minutes remaining, having already contributed 16 points and 10 rebounds."You've got to play with what you've got," Chalmers said. "But it definitely added up."Myles picked up his fourth and fifth fouls just six seconds apart, the Musketeers failing to take him off the court before the refs did it for them. Myles hopped away in disbelief, then retreated to the bench, covering his face with a towel."We were trying to get him out," coach Thad Matta said. "I guess we were a little slow.".....................

BTW, does wikipedia mention the championship the refs gave duke in 2001. Who was Arizona player that Jason Williams rode like bull with no call?
  • reclegend22
Duke won the game against Arizona in 2001 by 11. Those two scenarios are hardly analogous. At the time that Oden picked up Justin Cage and threw him back toward earth like Diamond Dallas Page, the Musketeers were winning the game by a basket with merely seconds remaining. If given the intentional foul call, Xavier shoots free throws, then gets the ball back and wins the game. Because the intentional was ignored, Xavier shoots two regular free throws, then Ohio States gets the ball and wins on a three at the buzzer.

I didn't think Tennessee was that bad of a match-up. Kentucky was.

I thought the Georgetown match-up from 2006 back when we were a (completely overachieving) 2 seed was the worst. I think most people were expecting to lose that game going in. Pretty rare for a 2/7 match-up.

And Im in no way trying to play down what Matta has done at OSU. Im just calling out those who are calling out Coach Cal (and, as an IU fan, I hate UK) when Matta has had top 3-5 talent in that time frame and has done less. Cal may be underachieving in the NCAAs, but if he is...Matta is really underachieving.

This argument and the pg argument are both retarded. Both coaches and players have done great jobs. Can we get back to talking about games.

Damian Lillard put up 40 on only 18 shots tonight for Weber State. It would be a shame if they choked (again) and missed the NCAA tournament, because he's a legit star. Most likely on their way to a 3rd regular season Big Sky title in 4 years, but no NCAA appearances so far in that stretch.

Last few? lol Do you happen to remember the talent he had a Memphis? I think there was a player...hmm, hard to recall his name...maybe Rose? Should we take IU title away when they NEEDED Smart to hit a last second shot to win it? ;)

Duke won the game against Arizona in 2001 by 11.
Because Jason Williams was on the floor and not on the bench where he belonged if the officials had not given duke another call...........
There was a buzz around the Final Four, though, that if the foul involves Duke, the Blue Devils will get the benefit of the call.

There were several moments in Duke's 82-72 victory over Arizona for the NCAA championship Monday night when fouls that seemed obvious weren't called, including one first-half collision between Jason Williams and Jason Gardner.

Williams had two personals at the time and a third would have been crucial. It turned into a no-call, though, leaving usually mild-mannered Arizona coach Lute Olson gesturing at the officials.
The refs. Krzyzewski used to rail that Dean Smith got calls because he was Dean Smith. Now the rest of America says the same thing about Coach K.

Especially after the 2001 Final Four, when the Dookies seemed to get every favorable whistle against Maryland and Arizona. The sight of Jason Williams, already in foul trouble, body-surfing on the back of Jason Gardner - no call! - remains vivid.

    .....
Matta was asked over and over about how Xavier forward Anthony Myles, who was pounding Duke on the blocks, could pick up four fouls in a six-minute stretch early in the second half, including two fouls in just six seconds. For conspiracy theorists, four of the calls were by Mike Kitts, who works many ACC games.
The two instances I referenced are just two of many...............
Duke-haters have long claimed that the Blue Devils enjoy an advantage with the refs. I believe the exact quote is: "Cripes, they get all the calls!!!"

Duke apologists scoff at the claim, but it's harder than ever to dispute it after last night's farce at Boston College, where Duke shot 37 free throws to BC's 13. 37-13!

And B.C. was the home team!

That Duke won by 2 points shouldn't fool anyone. With even a smidgen of better reffing, BC would have won the game. But why should anyone think that Duke will ever stop getting the calls?
Deron Washington found out early what he and his Virginia Tech teammates were up against.

About 90 seconds into the game, the forward was running back on defense when he got shoved hard from behind by Duke's Shelden Williams. Washington went sprawling across the floor, then waited for the foul to be called.

    The whistle never blew
To wit -- two: On Saturday when the Wake Forest game was still a contest, the perhaps still-incensed Boozer (20 points, 18 rebounds) bullrushed the Deacons' point guard, Broderick Hicks, on a loose ball, practically crashing him into the Cameron Crazies and ultimately out of the game with a deep thigh bruise. "WHOA! WHOA! I GOT ONE EYE AND EVEN I CAN SEE THAT [was a foul]!" roared even Dick (Dukey) Vitale when Boozer was not whistled for any violation.
As Andre Sweet said,""I'm like, 'Of course, it's true. It's Duke.' It's Mike Krzyzewski. The refs were afraid of him. He could get you calls that no one else could get. That's part of playing for Duke.

^ Good post. It happens elsewhere, as well, but Duke fans aren't a group with any right to talk.

Interesting, and have no doubt how it works out. It worked out that way when Knight was at IU and had things rolling. I watched it personally a number of times. The guy knew when it was time to ride the officials. And it was only a matter of time before those calls started to go his way. Guys like Knight and K, know when and how to push the right buttons. No question about it.

Duke is only successful because of the bias from refs. I'd love to see Duke win a game of streetball against a D-2 team, they would lose every time if they didn't have the refs to bail them out.
  • Prescott
He should have retired after last year's National Championship.
