"This is costing money, but not a cost on taxpayers," he said. "And this will not have an operational impact. We're not keeping this ship from deployment to hold a basketball game."
Whalen said sponsorship dollars (Quicken Loans is the title sponsor), advertising and grants are paying for the event.

[h=2]Rain could threaten shipboard Veterans Day game[/h]

SAN DIEGO — A chilly rain might put a damper on the Navy’s plans to host the inaugural Quicken Loans Carrier Classic basketball game on the flight deck of the aircraft carrier Carl Vinson on Veterans Day.
Weather forecasters say a cold front will swing into San Diego late Friday — but whether it will force the Division I game between the Michigan State Spartans and University of North Carolina Tar Heels to shift to Vinson’s hangar deck remains to be seen.
President Obama is expected to attend the game, which will start just after 7 p.m. EDT on a makeshift basketball arena on Vinson, which is berthed at Naval Air Station North Island, Calif.
“It looks like it will come in Friday night — late Friday night — and last most of Saturday,” National Weather Service meteorologist Stephen Harrison said Tuesday morning. “They may avoid the bad weather, but it is still kind of far out” to predict the exact timing.
“If the latest models continue, it looks like it’ll be a good precipitation event,” Harrison said.
The stormy weather will move from the west into San Diego and across Southern California and dump some measurable rain through the night Friday and into Saturday morning, with rain heavy at times. Rain will linger into the afternoon Saturday before clearing by Sunday. Temperatures will sink to the lows 50s.
The timing of the rain’s arrival will provide a challenge for the Navy, lead organizer Morale Entertainment Foundation and ESPN, which will televise the game. Organizers have sold or distributed 7,000 tickets to Vinson sailors, as well as fans of both schools. But if rain forces the game to be played in the hangar bays, a smaller crowd of perhaps 4,000 or 5,000 would be able to attend. It’s unclear at this point what will be the priority for hangar bay seating, which crews were assembling just in case rain forces the game under cover, a Naval Air Forces spokesman said Tuesday.
“We are all watching the weather very closely,” said Senior Chief Mass Communication Specialist (SW/AW) Dave Nagle.
Tipoff for the game will be at 7:15 p.m. Friday EDT. The decision to go to Plan B will be made either late Thursday or early Friday, Nagle said.
Rain on Saturday doused workers as they assembled the bleachers and the wood playing surface on Vinson’s flight deck. The next few days will be sunny and warmer before the front moves in Friday.

From 7000 tickets to 4000-5000 tickets if it's moved inside.

How many times per year does it rain in San Diego? Four or five?

Figures that it would rain during this.
  • Con_Alma
Can't be many. Wonder if the event is even able to even break even if it's moved indoors!!

I hope it doesn't rain. I'd like to see an outdoor game. I don't believe I've ever seen a college or pro game played outdoors. It certainly sounds like an intriguing event between two power programs. UNC rolls, however, no matter whether the game is played on a boat, in a hanger or in a pool.

Getting an early start, I see. :)

I think if the weather holds off til Friday night, they might be able to get it in outdoors. Remember it's being played at 4 PM their time.

LOL. I actually meant that one.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to watch this game tomorrow night. Gonna be following my Jackson Ironmen in the state playoffs, so I'll definitely be setting the DVR. Hope Carolina can get the season off to a good start.

Hard to believe that basketball season is here already. Should be a lot of fun this year.

This is a pretty sweet idea!

As I've said, I think the basketball on a boat idea is really cool. But the decision to use the boat that buried Osama bin Laden at sea seems like bit of an odd choice. Maybe next year we can see Ohio State play Florida on the "Enola Gay," the B-29 Superfortress that conducted the atomic radiation bombings against the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

    That'd be pretty cool.

Pretty sweet setup they've got on the flight deck.

    Michigan St owning the boards

UNC not doing good at the charity stripe. Getting owned on the boards, as well.
  • reclegend22
But they lead by seven, and will win by 20-plus.

We're gonna see Vitale's sundowners really act up tonight. Speaking of, he started talking about Hansbrough/NBA then immediately got distracted by Obama and marriage.

Theyre givin MSU all kinds of charge calls. And its pretty 1 sided in terms of fouls called.

This is a sad display of a faded out star. #BigGameJames

And the fact that it's the 7 footer being a secondary defender takes the cake.
