sportchamppsGonna have Pitt, NC, Duke, Cuse and maybe even Uconn. Damn.

swamisezUconn joins and the tournament gets moved to the Garden every other year.
-
killer_ewokCan't wait for my Orange to play Duke and UNC every year. Hope the refs let 'em play.
-
swamisezam anxious for that first trip to the Carrier Dome as well. One of few places in college bb that has the same home-court advantage as Cameron

andy katz agrees with you, but doesn't see how the ACC doesn't go after that location at least in a rotation with Greensboro.wildcats20;902376 wrote:God I hope not.

Terry_TateWell shit, there goes the Big Ten ever having a shot at winning the Big Ten/ACC Challenge again.

Having been to Greensboro, it blows. It's a tradition like giving fruitcakes for Christmas. City stinks, venue stinks, hotels and travel are through the roof. The ACC has become to big to play its conference tourney in a cornpone town. And it gives too much continuing advantage to the NC schools, let if float like every other conference.swamisez;902559 wrote:andy katz agrees with you, but doesn't see how the ACC doesn't go after that location at least in a rotation with Greensboro. -

Gotta think there won't be a challenge. Can't have 7 top teams going against 3 and then sucky teams. Makes no sense. -

Unless Texas, Kansas, and ND are B1G then -

Greensboro renovated the Coliseum for this event specifically. The league offices are there, and it is geographically closer to the heart of the ACC where four schools are separated by less than 60 miles (Wake UNC-ch, Duke, State). Having been to the Garden and to Greensboro, the ACC in Greensboro is more achievable for fans of all walks, the tournament in Manhattan would definitely eliminate the familial atmosphere that exists at ACC tournaments in the current era.Manhattan Buckeye;902725 wrote:Having been to Greensboro, it blows. HeelzWould be a great to watch these elite teams going at it possibly 2-3 times a year.

The city still sucks. Nothing to do. I don't give a rat's butt about the league office, and that four schools are separated by 60 miles adds to my point that is a happy birthday to those schools. Atlanta, St. Pete, DC, Charlotte, and if the increase happens NYC are equally if not better locales.swamisez;902779 wrote:Greensboro renovated the Coliseum for this event specifically. This isn't the freaking Duke/UNC tournament. -
swamisezSt.Pete was a disaster. Was one of the worst attended ACC tournaments in history. When it was in Landover in the late 80's the building was not full either. In 2005 when Washington D.C. played host, following Maryland's ouster the MCI center was a ghost town for game 2 of the semifinals. I know as a city Greensboro is lacking, but the event itself is what is being showcased. Unlike other venues the games take center stage and the schedule encourages fans to stay the entire day and tailgate in the lots between sessions.
I think that is primarily why the tournament has been located in the Carolinas. With the fan bases rooted here the stadium is always sold out for friday saturday and sunday sessions. 22,000 seats at Gboro 78 dollars a ticket for weekdays 95 for Saturday. Given this whole operation is based on $$$, I do wonder if the ability for increased income exists if the tournament is relocated to NYC or the Garden. I know Duke has a large NYC contingent, but Clemson FSU VaTech GaTech State likely do not.
Side note, I wonder if Indiana were better there would be a cry of foul because the Big Ten Tournament has been played in Conseco Fieldhouse 7 of its 13 years. I know some think it is unfair for Carolina Duke State Wake to play so close to home, but even when they have travelled out of the state of NC, Duke and Carolina have won the tournament. If the same two teams are going to battle for it every year shouldn't they be afforded a luxury of not having to fly to Tampa, Atlanta, NYC to do it? -

No, because Indianapolis isn't a crappy town that charges $400/night at the freaking Holiday Inn. I equate the ACC tournament in Greensboro with taking the NY bar exam (for out of state applicants) in Albany - the locals know you have no choice so they jack the rates up for that weekend hoping to be in the black for the year based on those few days.
If you have the tournament in a real city, if one's team makes it to the weekend (or semis, depending on the time of the week) they don't have to commit to 4 days of overpriced hotels in a terrible city.
Greensboro acts like it is Augusta National during Masters week, but it isn't, and at least in the Masters you know there are good golfers every day of the tournament. -
swamisezIf you decide to come down again, let me know. I will help you find a hotel that is quality and isn't 400 dollars.
Sorry that happened to you. -

There have been 58 ACC Tournaments. Carolina(17) and Dook(19) have won a combined 36 of them. So yeah I'd say it is a Carolina/Dook tournament. Add in 10 from State and 4 from Wake and that makes 50 of 58 have been won by teams in the state of North Carolina. The tournament belongs in North Carolina.Manhattan Buckeye;902796 wrote:The city still sucks. Nothing to do. Manhattan BuckeyeWell then they can win it elsewhere. Kentucky has killed the SEC tournament, they don't play it in Lexington and Louisville every year. That is why Duke/UNC < Kentucky.

Maybe not in a literal sense.Manhattan Buckeye wrote:This isn't the freaking Duke/UNC tournament.
Echoing the sentiments above, results of the last 15 ACC tournaments:
2011 - Duke
2010 - Duke
2009 - Duke
2008 - UNC
2007 - UNC
2006 - Duke
2005 - Duke
2004 - Maryland
2003 - Duke
2002 - Duke
2001 - Duke
2000 - Duke
1999 - Duke
1998 - UNC
1997 - UNC
In other words, NC State, Wake Forest, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Florida State, Boston College and Miami have all been impacted by Tim Duncan's graduation. The Duncan-led Demon Deacons of 1996 were the last school other than Maryland, which needed an overtime session to knock of five-time defending tournament champion Duke in '04, to win the ACC's post-season event.
And, unless the Big East decides to stop playing its annual post-season tournament in MSG, which the conference has held there every year since the early '80s, the ACC is never taking its event to Manhattan. Like basketball in New York City belongs to the playground, the "Grand Daddy" of the college basketball tournament is suited for a coliseum in North Carolina. -
wildcats20I honestly could see the ACC Tournament going to the new arena in Brooklyn though if the Big East doesn't swoop it up like has been rumored.
-
reclegend22^^That's a good point, and I was thinking about that location in Brooklyn, too, especially in light of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic moving to that facility next year.
Luckily, however, the ACC Tournament isn't leaving the South anytime soon. It will be in Atlanta this season, and is then scheduled to be played in its rightful home in Greensboro through 2016. If Connecticut ends up joining the conference in the near future, thereby expanding the ACC's regional presence in the northeast with not only powerhouse Syracuse but also the three-time national champion Huskies, then the league would have much weighted incentive to bring the event to the NYC area.
My wishful thinking, however, hopes that Greensboro will always remain the mainstay home for the event. There's just something extra special about the tournament when played in Carolina. No matter location of their teams, I think most basketball fans of the ACC would agree. -
ohiotiger33Looks like 2007 was the last chance we had to win the ACC Tournament. Oh well haha.
-
Classyposter58I agree it shouldn't be in Greensboro! I've been through there many times and it's a joke, like having the MAC Championship in Toledo as they did back in the day. Honestly put it in a bigger city, you have the RBC Center in Raleigh and the Time Warner Arena in Charlotte that would just be awesome to host
