Bowl Gifts

  • darbypitcher22
Any of the publications have the annual list of bowl gifts for players, coaches, etc. out yet? its always interesting to see which teams get what, some of them give out pretty good stuff

i love these too. some really good stuff like ipods, gift cards, cameras and some really stupid shit too like fleeces and bags.
  • darbypitcher22
fleeces aren't too bad; the bags, well, while practical, a college kid doesn't really want a set of samsonite luggage(yes, teams have given that away)

It's funny you mention this. I was thinking the exact same thing a couple days ago. I too would like to know.

That sounds like the best one to me.

Wow, I would be pissed to be playing in the Hawaii Bowl. That linked only showed an aloha shirt haha. Guess they figure going to Hawaii is enough
  • dave
i bet they get a little something else, but yeah a trip to hawaii for a week is worth more than an ipod or whatever else you can get for $500

What is the Sony Gift Suite? Is it like a "store" of sony products that the players get to select from?
  • darbypitcher22
I think there's a hospitality area set up somewhere by Sony with a bunch of products and you can go through and pick

Holiday Bowl looks like it has some nice stuff....

Sun Bowl usually comes through until you see Brut hair dryer on the end of everything

I swear, I heard yesterday on espn one of the bowls was giving the players a recliner???? WTF?
  • krambman
The Capital One bowl that does a Best Buy shopping spree for each team every year. To me, this would be the best because you get to pick everything out yourself. Give me that and maybe a hat, football, or some other memento from the game, I'd be happy.

And if you're a player who went to a school that wasn't close to home then the luggage would be a good gift. Not the most exciting thing, but definitely practical. If you're flying back and forth between school and home several times a year, luggage can very quickly become worn out.

I can't find the article now, but basically Sony just fills a couple of hotel rooms with their stuff, and it's approximately a $300 shopping spree.

How do they get away with giving the players these items? Doesn't this affect their status as amateurs?
  • darbypitcher22
You're allowed to spend up to $500 on each player
  • Quint
Ok. . . everything I've read just said that Bowls can spend up to $500 on players. . . so I'm assuming the NCAA has just written into their bylaws that these gifts are ok.

The Bowl itself can spend $500. Combine this with the fact that they use rather low wholesale prices to calculate this, and the limit can be skirted by giving/selling some stuff for cheap to the institutions, who then give it to the players. So, some doesn't count against the total (falls under another, different cap on the stuff) and they often get more than $500 worth.

I also read that the NCAA allows universities to spend an additional $350 on the players for gifts.
