Yahoo again: Tressel made $21.7 million at Ohio State
-
georgemc80Who cares how much the man made? I don't fault any man or woman money they convince someone to pay them. Nice negotiating JT...
-
WriterbuckeyeAny red-blooded American would be happy for JT that he had been so successful in his career -- but stories like this are meant to bring out the class warfare whiners who want you to resent anyone who has made it.
In this case, they also want you to think he was some dastardly cheater who "got away" with millions. They, of course, ignore the fact that he probably generated 10 times what he made for the university -- and he also donated something like $3 million of his own money back to various schools and charities during that time.
He was a real bastard. -

I'm sorry but i didn't see an outline of other coaches that committed violations having their pay outlined! Not that we didn't know he made a ton of money. Hom much did ol Pete make at USC? How about Butch Davis at NC? Hell whoever the GT coach is during the 2009 season. I could go on and on!
Everyone is out to get OSU. It's obvious. -
Scarlet_BuckeyeFab1b;856737 wrote:All the sudden coaches pay needs to be reviewed after OSU is in trouble. Many many many others with very well paid coaches were in much more trouble long before Ohio State!! This is such a joke! How about Bruce Pearl's pay Yahoo College Basketball? Old Miami coaches? Hell the BB coach at Baylor who tried to cover up a murder??????? I don't know why I even bother with yahoo but I do, I think it is that I have used yahoo for so long I just know where to go for info but this **** is really ticking me off!
This! -

What's the common theme in those cases?
Pete Carroll (USC) looked the other way on stuff that one of his assistants bore primary responsibility for.
Butch Davis (UNC) may or may not have had any knowledge of the recruiting practices that John Blake was involved in, and there's no reason to believe that he knew of players being courted by agents to the extent that it took place. Davis was also clean during his previous stint at Miami.
Paul Johnson (GT) was completely exonerated by the NCAA; the responsibility for that falls on one player and on athletic department staff, all of whom have been purged. Johnson was clean during previous stints at Georgia Southern, Hawaii, and Navy.
But...
Jim Tressel (OSU) had knowledge of several activities that were clear violations of NCAA rules and took an active part in covering them up. He also had knowledge of similar activities at Youngstown State, and took an active part in covering them up. -
stroupsSo you are giving the other coaches the benefit of the doubt that the other coaches had no knowledge of the stuff that went on but you are confident that tressel knew about the youngstown state affairs. Even when that player came out and said it would have been impossible for tressel to have found out.

Pay NNN no attention. He's the anti-OSU sleeper.stroups;861002 wrote:So you are giving the other coaches the benefit of the doubt that the other coaches had no knowledge of the stuff that went on but you are confident that tressel knew about the youngstown state affairs. I'm going off of what the NCAA determined, which was that Carroll may have been lax but didn't have direct knowledge, Davis may have been lax but didn't appear to have direct knowledge (and sat a ton of players while the investigation was still ongoing), and that Johnson was completely exonerated.

Anti-OSU, yes. Able to string coherent and rational thoughts together, yes. Therefore, NNN is not equal to Sleeper. -

Well if you're going off of what the NCAA has determined, then all you can say about OSU is that JT knew about the players who traded autographs for tats. He covered it up, and only him. No one else knew. It's been determined that those allegations are, in fact, the only allegations OSU will be punished for.NNN;864724 wrote:I'm going off of what the NCAA determined, which was that Carroll may have been lax but didn't have direct knowledge, Davis may have been lax but didn't appear to have direct knowledge (and sat a ton of players while the investigation was still ongoing), and that Johnson was completely exonerated.

You also have no proof, that JT was involved in "similar activities" while at Youngstown State. Hearsay? Yes. Proof? No. -

Okay, so we have a head coach who knew about something that would most likely render star players ineligible, and he covered it up for various reasons. On the other hand, using what the NCAA has also determined, neither of the other three cases mentioned (USC, North Carolina, or Georgia Tech) involve a head coach either having knowledge or being involved in covering up; Tressel is guilty on both counts.
I'll also point out that YSU was cited for lack of institutional control and docked scholarships related to the Ray Isaac/Mickey Monus case. Who was the athletic director at the time, and who has been accused of not actually meeting with Isaac or Monus at any point during their "internal investigation"? -

The athletic director was a dirty character by the name of Joe Malmisur who was on Monus' payroll. The President Cochran, the athletic director Malmisur, and Monus were all found guilty, yet Tressel wasn't. Why? Because he didn't know. Maybe you should know the facts before you run your mouth. -
TiernanOff topic...but Why the Fk was Tressel sticking his nose in at Browns practice yesterday? Either Shurmer has something in mind for JT or he's a bigger headline hound than anyone imagined. You'd think he would be keeping a low low profile at least thru this season.

The article I read said Lloyd Carr was there as well. I guess "retired" coaches just get bored. -

Dan Gilbert was there as well. I don't think it really means anything. Tress tends to grab more headlines than the dead beat President of the United States it seems.
Further proof ESPN is ran by a bunch of douches, they felt it necessary to point out the fact that Pryor's lawyer stated Pryor has admitted to "other allegations" back in MAY. In May?! And they still think it's worth mentioning in the middle of all this Miami crap. -
karen lotzIts relevant to point that out about Pryor because he is trying to prove to the NFL that his status with the NCAA had changed so he can get into the Draft. It has zero to do with Miami.

This. Miami is going to get their fair share of attention, but TP's draft eligibility is news right now too, and will be until the NFL stops dragging their feet. -

And it's very relevant to the ongoing OSU investigation. -

That's my point, isn't it safe to assume that the NCAA already knew about this? Since it was brought up in May? The fact that the NCAA has told OSU that they will face no new allegations, would that mean they already knew about Pryor receiving money from his "mentor"?
And I understand the relevance, because it affects Pryor's elligibility for the draft. Mike and Mike were talking about all the Miami crap going on, mentioned "Oh by-the-way, Pryor's Lawyer said this", then finished out the rest of Miami crap. I would think they'd reported the Miami news, then in the next segment talked about Pryor. Basically, I didn't see the need to point out Pryor admitting whatever in the middle of talking about the Miami allegations. -

You have too much faith in the NCAA.OhioStatePride2003;865231 wrote:That's my point, isn't it safe to assume that the NCAA already knew about this? Since it was brought up in May? Absolutely do not. But if they've already said there's "no new allegations" against OSU, and this was apparently spilled back in May, that it'd mean the NCAA knew about Pryor's "mentor" payments.
Edit: And as I just finished typing this out, it scrolls across ESPN that an OSU Spokesman says that Pryor never told the school, or the NCAA about this. -

There are no new allegations against OSU. This is true. But there is an investigation ongoing. Obviously we don't know the details, so we can only speculate. But it wouldn't be surprising if the Sarniak/Pryor stuff was not part of the original investigation. In fact, wasn't the letter than surfaced last week dated in July? So they could have found out about this, but decided to move forward on the current case and treat the "new" stuff as a separate case.
IDK. Like I said, speculation. -
Y-Town SteelhoundUnless Tressel knew about these alleged payments from Sarniak to Pryor it has no relevance to the current investigation, as evidenced by it being allegedly told to the NCAA back in May.

I would wager cold, hard cash that Tressel was invited to the practice, as was LLLLLoyd Carr. Tressel is the antithesis of a headline seeker. On the other hand, what do you want him to do, hide away for a year? He's retired and gone. He's going to live his life. Going back to his hometown (Berea, where the Browns train) isn't unusual.
