DePaul announced Thursday that former Dr. Phillips basketball star Shane Larkin will not be playing for the Blue Demons as a freshman in 2011-12 due to an undisclosed medical condition that requires him to be closer to his Orlando home.
Larkin, the son of former Cincinnati Reds shortstop Barry Larkin, committed to DePaul last October after considering offers from a long list of schools.
Larkin, a two-time Class 6A first-team All-State player, is the second leading scorer in DP history with 1,633 career points. The 5-foot-11 point guard led the state runner-up Panthers (27-6) in scoring (18.8 points per game), assists (6.4), rebounds (6.3) and steals (3.5) as a senior.
