So tell me...

sleeperIf Ohio State was really going to get this alleged big time punishment similar to USC, why haven't they self-imposed any punishments beyond the suspensions of the players?
I think the answer is pretty obvious, but maybe someone can explain to me why they haven't. -
krambmanI think you are right to some degree. I think that there will be other punishment levied against them by the NCAA, but it does seem somewhat odd that OSU hasn't self-imposed any penalties. In the past when things like this have happened OSU has self-imposed, as do most schools. Perhaps they don't want to over do it by imposing harsher penalties than the NCAA will or simply because they want to wait because they think that there aren't any more penalties that need imposed. OSU has also been working closely with the NCAA since the very beginning, so maybe they do know something we don't.

karen lotzDon't self imposed penalties come from self investigations? If the NCAA is investigating with OSU, and neither investigation has been finished, why would they self impose penalties at this point? They did originally suspend Tressel for 2 games and gave him the fine, but that was before the rest of this stuff came out.

sleeperOSU can self impose whenever they want. If they really feel the NCAA is going to come down hard, they'd try to mitigate the damage by self imposing punishment. The fact that they haven't just reinforces that the punishment will be relatively mild.
-
HitsRusOSU has been self flaggellating itself for relatively minor violations ....Tressel's lie was the only major one, and he's gone.

Because the last six times they tried to handle the situation themselves, they looked like fucktards. Even the worst liars eventually know when they're just going to have to take their medicine. -

No they aren't. 15 scholarships over 3 years and that's it, bank it, book it. -
passwordMaybe they just feel that they are too big and important that the NCAA would never come down hard on them, so why bother making things worse by offering any other punishment, just move on and forget about it. Smith and Gee still don't see anything wrong with the way the program is being run, Tressel is now gone, they feel they should be let off the hook so they can continue making money for OSU and the NCAA. I don't see how the NCAA can just give a slap on the wrist because other programs will expect the same when they commit major violations.

There was only one major violation and that guy is no longer apart of the University. The players are suspended for their allotment, and Pryor is gone as well.
Like I said, slap on the wrist, book it, bank it. -

Most of the USC kids were in Junior High when all the trouble there went down. The coaches are gone and the AD is gone. Last time I checked, Pete Carroll or Reggie Bush was never handed any suspensions. -
ZoltanWe have been hearing since the Yahoo article that there are bombs to be dropped and OSU is going down in flames. Well its now mid June and the only thing to break since then is someone put a flimsy dollar value on money Pryor was getting for autographs and memorabilia.
OSU has self reported everything. USC did the complete opposite. USC also had an assistant coach involved with the Bush situation, and they had the OJ Mayo thing in basketball. OSU may get a similar punishment, but based on what we know right now it would be totally unfair. -

Lets see what we know.
1. Players trade memorabilia and OSU property for cash & tattoos.
2. Players were driving cars the couldn't afford.
3. Tressel lied about his knowledge to NCAA.
4. Tressel knowingly allowed the violations.
5. Players accepted cash for autographs.
Accusations that are being investigated.
1. Players traded stuff for drugs.
2. Players were given cash from Alumni.
3. Players were offered girls during recruiting visits.
4. Tressel encouraged relationships with Alumni who offered cash.
5. Tressel has a encouraged improprieties since coming to OSU.
6. Tressel rigged raffles to award prizes to highly sought after recruits during camps.
7. OSU has known of violations for almost 10 years and turned their head.
8. Asst. Coaches knowingly helped players stay under the radar.
9. Families were given special treatment with cars.
10. Family members were given jobs.
11. Players and family members were given special deals at local businesses.
That is just the short list of how things worked during the Tressel era. -
vball10set^^^you forgot the most important thing on that list.....9-1 against tsun

krambmanIn reference to the post above I think that they only things they are going to be able to prove are the things we already know for sure. The rest of the things that have been accused either happened too long ago that they are beyond the statute of limitation, the accusers are unwilling to talk with the NCAA, or there is no paper trail, which is really what the NCAA needs to prove anything.
Essentially OSU will get in trouble for having five players sell and trade memorabilia, and for having a coach who knew about it and didn't come forward when he found out or when the wrongdoing was made public. With USC Bush and his family took hundreds of thousands of dollars over several years, and there was a coach orchestrating the deals and actively covering it up. While public opinion wants the NCAA to come down hard, there simply isn't enough that can be proven for that to happen, because you can only punish OSU for what you know they did/didn't do. This is also why at worse they will get charged with lack of oversight, and not lack of institutional control. -

Which isn't anything to sneeze at. But I agree. At this point it looks like the sanctions will go no further than the original tattoo stuff. -
passwordThat was my point also about what we know and what are accusations. You can't punish someone on rumors alone and regardless of what everyone thinks is true, unless people start talking, which I do think will happen but to what extent is still unknown. The NCAA will look at the whole picture and I think they will come down as hard as possible for the violations that they can prove without leniency because of Pryor refusing to talk to them, it makes him and OSU look guilty of more and they hate when people refuse to talk to them. I will admit that I was one of the first ones that wanted to hang Tressel and Pryor when this started but that was more out of dislike for them both because of the phony persona they try to display and not as much about the violations. I still think that Tressel should be punished if he decides to coach again in the NCAA regardless of the school or position because of the attempted cover up and damage it has done to OSU, it just seems like where ever he goes, violations follow him and he never feels that he has to explain his actions. You really can't punish Pryor now that he has ran away from his problems, so he gets to escape with no reprimand and still thinks he is entitled, he could be headed down the wrong road again with his white version of Don King as his agent, he must already think he is the best quarterback to ever enter the NFL and will expect everyone to kiss his ass when he arrives. What will happen when he is sitting the bench or is hit by guys like James Harrison who don't care that he was a over hyped high school quarterback that played at OSU, he won't be able to run and complain to the coach anymore and they will eat him alive, that will be his punishment in the long run. I am not looking to argue with anyone and sometimes I may come off as wanting to argue or stir the pot but I really don't mean to come off that way. I am done ranting about something that we have no control over and can only hope that this ends so we can move on.

The NCAA left campus like 2 weeks ago. Also, they self reported the tats and Tressel.
