As a practical matter, does it mean anything?

The BCS expects no money to be returned. Payments are made to conferences, not specific teams. According to Hancock, the Pac-10 "will keep its distribution since the conference would have placed at least one team in the BCS."
Everyone gets to keep their money, so I guess not.

I would agree. The whole vacating thing is like un-ringing a bell, I suppose we can pretend we didn't hear it, but we did. Dirty or not, that was a hell of a team.

Funny, no mention anywhere on ESPN about this.... Only headline about them on the CFB page is "USC should be much improved in '11"

It was running on the bottom line as "Breaking News" for a good bit.

U$C has zero BCS titles, haha. Get the best recruits year in and year out and no titles to show for it.

Gotcha, I was just looking on their website. Wish my office had ESPN on during the day!

Dumb. Everyone knows that USC was the best team that year, there's no doubt about it.

Agree with what's been said above (especially the bell analogy). The AP already said it's not stripping USC of its title. USC has said it's still recognizing it as a National Championsihp season (as they should). What does the BCS have to gain from this other than having a blank spot in its record books and an extra crystal football? Not only is it stupid because it happened 7 years ago, but it's not like you can erase the games. They happened....and USC was without question the best team in the country that season. This is why I think the entire process of vacating wins is stupid. You can't vacate experiences and memories.

Geezus man, give them a few minutes to write something up. FYI - It's the top story now.

But winning the AP title doesn't mean shit anymore. They could claim that Troy was the National Champion this year, but the computers obviously disagree.

I don't agree with the BCS system at all, but it is a hell of a lot better than humans picking multiple National Champions that did not face each other during the year.

The AP title isn't as meaningful as it used to be, but it still has history behind it. It's not like they were picking based on the old way either. Most of the time the AP champion is the winner of the BCS title game, as was the case in this situation.

On ESPN, Matt Lienert as much as said the BCS action was meaningless to him and his teammates. They KNOW they won it on the field, they have rings, they have tapes.

And that was about the last good thing that happened to him, so he'll be clinging to them for a long long time.

Probably the best of the BCS era, if not 2001 Miami Canes.

2003 USC would've wiped the floor with LSU if they hadn't been hosed by the worst final BCS rankings ever. SC's 1 vacated title > LSU's fraudulent title in '03 + a 2-loss title in '07.

Wow, seriously? This could go down as the dumbest post in ohiochatter history.

04 USC was a great team but the 01 Canes are one of the best teams of all-time. The talent on that roster was absolutely incredible.

And it was a team of professionals. They cheated. They paid their players and had a huge advantage from a recruiting standpoint.

I could score the highest score on the bar exam, but if I cheated to get the highest score, I can pretend that it didn't matter....after all I still got the highest score. But I still cheated, and it matters. USC's title will be a disgrace, and now they have to deal with lost schollies and a bowl ban.

Is it that fucking difficult to play by the rules? Are we so incompetent that we can't do things the right way?

Not really a good comparison. "They" didn't pay their players. One guy got money from a third party after he'd already been at the school - the money had nothing to do with his choice or his performance. Sure, it was against the rules and yeah they have to deal with it because the NCAA is suddenly trying to prove a point. Still doesn't change history. And it is different from having answers to a test. You can buy all the players you want, it is still no guarantee of success and other teams still have the chance to stop you. However the team was assembled, it was still a great team and the best on the field.

Naivety. You don't think when players visit the campus they aren't told by current players what bennies they get? Of course they do. Reggie Bush was a professional, they cheated and they are paying for it now. Their 2004 championship can sit in the cockles of the hearts of their supporters, the fact is they cheated and its gone. Congrats on being a cheater. I don't give a fuck what they did on the field, they are cheaters.

And Leinart's piss poor attitude is why the rule is in place, maybe if he had a bit of discipline put in him he wouldn't have turned into the bust he turned into. USC is a joke, I can only hope that OSU doesn't turn in to it. If you want to play NCAA you have to play by very obvious rules. USC didn't. I'm fucking sick of people and institutions that have to cheat....USC gets everything they deserve.

Haven't came across your thoughts on OSU yet. What do you think about the whole Tressel playing the Tat 5 in the BCS game?
