So much for the theory the Big East and ACC are by far the worst conferences. I know, these polls are stupid and bias and whatever else. -
Cleveland BuckI don't think they're stupid or biased, but they aren't the final authority on the issue. There isn't a large enough sample of nonconference games every year to definitively decide the differences between conferences. That means people have to use their eyes to make decisions about it.
-
jordo212000Yup haha the Big 10 is right where me and a few others have been saying it is all along. Facts are facts, the Big 10 is dangerously close to being a 1 team conference.

I'll believe it when I see it. If it happens, I'll tip my cap. However you seem to be ignoring the conference's success against strong OOC opponents this year. Heck Ohio State even got beat by a very average USC team IN THE SHOEccrunner609 wrote: And when they have a winning bowl record this year will prove all of that wrong. -
SportsAndLadyI hate these things...remember a few years ago when they didn't have the SEC first? lol
-
BCSbunksagarin has the worst ranking of anyone out there.
He has USC at #13 in the country and ahead of Stanford and Arizona that just beat them. His system is garbage. -
centralbucksfanWow, I didn't realize that Sagarin was the End All in determing who was the best. Sheesh, why even have the BCS, just let the Sagarin pick to the 2 teams!!

The ACC is currently a 0 team conference, so the Big 10 still wins.jordo212000 wrote: Yup haha the Big 10 is right where me and a few others have been saying it is all along. Facts are facts, the Big 10 is dangerously close to being a 1 team conference. -

i would say that is accurate this season....eersandbeers wrote: 1 SOUTHEASTERN (A) = 81.00 81.40 ( 1) 12

fwiw, anderson and hester, colley and wolfe all have SEC as the top conference as well.
http://www.andersonsports.com/football/ACF_frnk.html
anderson and hester have big ten #5
http://prwolfe.bol.ucla.edu/cfootball/ratings.htm#Division
wolfe has the big ten #6

colley has the big ten #4 -
DaBrowns41That's accurate for this season.
But until the ACC and Big East can be consistent, they are still the bottom two conferences overall.
If there's a 5-10 year stretch where the Big Ten is last or second to last, then I'll gladly accept that, but that's simply not the case when we're just 3 years removed from OSU and UM at #1 and #2. -
rocket31you might say that, however, the big ten ranks near last in conference bowl records for this entire decade (2000-2008)...
2008: 1-6
2007: 2-5
2006: 2-5
2005: 3-4
2004: 3-3
2003: 3-5
2002: 4-2
2001: 2-4
2000: 2-4
as you can see, as a whole, the conference has had only one winning bowl season this decade (2002-ohio state title season) -
ytownfootballHow many of those seasons did they play up though? I don't know. I don't know how else you would gauge a conferences strength other than head to head but matchups are a huge factor and I'm not so sure that's a good barometer.
-
rocket31"playing up" is a term many big ten proponents have used to justify there recent bowl game slide, however, the sec and big 12 have "played up" more than any other conference this decade and their respective bowl results are still superior.
-
ytownfootballAnd I'm not saying the Big 10 is on par with the SEC, but whatever
-
rocket31
i know you are not arguing that...ytownfootball wrote: And I'm not saying the Big 10 is on par with the SEC, but whatever
i see your point, i have heard it before, i just do not believe it is a valid reason since many conferences face similar obstacles...
regardless, i do see the big ten performing better this bowl season. -
ytownfootballHonestly, I don't. I just hope they are able to hold their own and not get embarrassed. 3-4

Azubuike24The Big 12, SEC and Big 10 (especially the first 2) "play up" in most bowl games because historically, these three conferences A) have the best overall programs in terms of popularity, B) usually send multiple teams to BCS games (every year I believe it's been one of these conferences doing it, since the BCS expanded to 5 games these 3 conferences have sent all extra at-large teams) and C) their bowl-tie ins are favorable while those from the other leagues (Big East and ACC especially) are pitiful.
It results in almost every game being "played up" or at least being even. It's really not even an excuse because it's now the norm rather than the exception. -
Little Danny
This is a good point. The Big East has a horrific bowl-tie in. One of their tie in has them matched with a C-USA team and the other a MAC school. Also, Pitt finished 9-3, 3rd in the league and is relegated to the Car Care Bowl on 12/26. If you finish 3rd in the B10, SEC, or Big 12, you get a New Year's Day Bowl matched up against another power conference opponent.Azubuike24 wrote: The Big 12, SEC and Big 10 (especially the first 2) "play up" in most bowl games because historically, these three conferences A) have the best overall programs in terms of popularity, B) usually send multiple teams to BCS games (every year I believe it's been one of these conferences doing it, since the BCS expanded to 5 games these 3 conferences have sent all extra at-large teams) and C) their bowl-tie ins are favorable while those from the other leagues (Big East and ACC especially) are pitiful.

The Big East did get a better deal this offseason which starts next season. However, it is still far from ideal. This really hurts the perception of the league. People see who they play in the bowl and give them no credibility if they win. They just assume they must be bad if they are matched up against N. Illinois or Southern Miss. -
ytownfootballIt actually hurts them worse the following season when pre-season rankings come out, makes the mountain tough to climb. Big East is in a no win situation.
-
cavattackSagarin gave a 2 loss USC the national championship in 2002. That is enough to prove the formula is crap.

Georgia Tech would annihilate Ohio State. Don't forget that Paul Johnson came from Navy and he already has GT running the offense better than Navy ever could (largely based on the talent differential).Mulva wrote: The ACC is currently a 0 team conference, so the Big 10 still wins. -

I have no idea what the hell you're talking about.ytownfootball wrote: Good analysis NNN 2002 doesn't count why?

Actually, hang on. I realized that to act like an idiot, I must think like one first. Seems that you looked at "title" and erroneously believed that it referred to any game that was the championship game in that particular year, rather than just what was actually called "The BCS Championship Game".
2002 does count; it counts in the Fiesta Bowl (which is what Ohio State and Miami was called) and in the Rose Bowl (which, if I remember correctly, featured an absolutely savage beating at the hands of USC).
At least I hope that's it...I shudder to think about if you actually were trying to apply Georgia Tech of 2009 retroactively to 2002. -
ytownfootballMy bad ass clown, it's late.

Right. What good teams did they "annihilate" this year?NNN wrote: Georgia Tech would annihilate Ohio State. Don't forget that Paul Johnson came from Navy and he already has GT running the offense better than Navy ever could (largely based on the talent differential).
Against bowl teams:
Clemson: W by 3
Miami: L by 16
North Carolina: W by 17
Florida State: W by 5
Va Tech: W by 5
Georgia: L by 6
Clemson: W by 5
Average margin against bowl teams: W by 1.86 points.
By the way, those 6 teams combined for 26 losses, an average of about 4.5 losses per team. Oh yeah, and the defense gave up 30+ points to all 3 SEC teams they played.
But that's a stellar resume. And they'd wipe the floor with OSU.
