Frank Martin
-
SportsAndLadyOkay, everyone knows I'm a Kansas fan...so naturally I hate Frank Martin. But I can't deny his ability to stick up for his players. After the game, a reporter worded a sentence in a way that upset him very much. I am trying to find the audio, but here's the dialogue
Some people have an issue with what he said and how he said it, I like em sticking up for his player.wrote:Q. Jacob, you, I mean, obviously, do some good things, set the school scoring record and matched your career high in points but you still can't get the win. How do you sum up the emotions that come after that?
JACOB PULLEN: I don't know. It's tough. You know, I want to win -- (tearing up)
COACH MARTIN: That is what you wanted to see? That what you were trying to get out of him? Make him cry here in front of people? Good question.
JACOB PULLEN: I just wanted to win the game. I don't care about a scoring record or anything else, man. I wanted to get to the Final Four and I didn't get a chance to do that.

What do you think? -
derek bomarI think he made it worse. The reporter is just doing his fucking job, and the coach is a dick for acting tough here. If you don't want to be asked a question like that, win. STFU martin.
-
vball10setI like the fact that he stuck up for his player, but I agree with derek bomar--it's almost like mommy coming to your defense at the playground. IMO, it wasn't needed, as Pullen was just showing his emotion-which the general public would've eaten up. He's a big boy, Frank--let him be.
-
MulvaThe question was phrased horribly by the reporter. Martin may have overreacted, but I don't get how this is a story.
In my opinion the people who are going crazy over what Martin did are overreacting to the situation way more than he did. -
thedynasty1998Martin just looks like a guy that is always looking for an excuse to snap on someone. Type of guy where you say, "How are you coach?" And he snaps back in some profanity laced rant about how pissed off he is because it's cloudy outside.
-
Laley23I like Martin in general, but WTF is this. The reporter basically said, "Jacob, GREAT career and great game tonight..just fell short of the win and the FF, sum up the emotions please."
It may be worded poorly, but it isnt that bad, and he is doing his job. Martin needs to shut up in this instance. Of course you are going to ask what its like to fall short in a game like that... -

The problem I have with the reporter, is he singled out Pullen. He said "you can't get the win" to his face, minutes after he lost and was on the verge of tears. He didn't say "you guys couldn't get it done" or "K-state couldn't get it done" he basically softened up the blow by mentioning the great game he played because he knew that question was gonna come off rough. -

Yeah, but reporters make mistakes too. I think the general meaning of the question was fine. Like I said, the wording may be poor, but you can tell what he meant. I dont think he meant to single out Pullen. Of course, thats text...Id have to hear it. -

Yeah I mean I don't have that big of a problem with what the reporter said, I just think he worded it poorly. What I have a problem with, is people bashing Frank Martin for sticking up for his player. -
reclegend22I see what you are saying, Sports, but I think the larger problem here is that Frank Martin is consistently a really giant ass. At times, he makes Bobby Knight look like a fluffy bunny rabbit with regard to amiable interaction. That is a bit of a reach, but Martin has got to get himself some Zoloft packets.

I agree. I would prefer he stick up in a better way though. Like, "We didnt win because Wisconsin played a hell of a game. Not because of Jacobs, or anyone elses efforts." etc etc.
Not "Thats what you wanted....good question." That is taking a shot back at the reporter while only half sticking up for his player. I have no issues with coaches standing up for their guys, but I dont like when the berate the media for a simple question/action. If its warranted fine, but here, I dont think it was. -

Well, Bobby was either the most lovable guy in a press room, or the freaking anti-christ. Martin is never lovable and often the devil lol.
I think people forget how great and funny Bobby was with the press and public. Martin doesnt have that gene. Only the angry gene. -

Haha yeah Franky Mart is a giant dick...we don't call em 'Mandingo' for nothing -

I concur. That's a great point about Knight. He is a fantastic interview subject for the reasons you mention. I could listen to Bobby Knight all day and would have killed to play for him and be a part of that total experience.Laley23 wrote:Well, Bobby was either the most lovable guy in a press room, or the freaking anti-christ. Frank Martin, to me, is just a douchebag. I'm sorry, but that's my feeling on that. Watching him coach basketball is like envisioning Kareem Abdul-Jabar playing quarterback. I have never felt Martin fit into the college basketball environment for some reason. He should be coaching tackle for the Raiders. -

Bahaha!
Martin might be the scariest guy in college basketball. Looks like he's ready to order a hit on someone...anyone at any given time. -
SportsAndLadyBy the way, EMAW fans seem to think Martin is as good as gone...they say he's done enough at K State and will be looking for a better job.
