Steve Lavin

Tiger2003Just got tossed from the game. Every time I watch St John's he is getting T up.

ironman02Didn't really watch the game, but tonight is an example of why I'm not really sure what to think about St. John's. I started a thread about them the other day talking about all the GREAT wins they have this year, but I get the feeling that they're gonna be "all or nothing" in the NCAA Tournament. They could make a run and knock off some of the favorites, just as they have all season, or they could lose early.
Whatever the case may be, Lavin has done a pretty outstanding job with this team, in my opinion. -
Tiger2003St Johns player just got thrown own. Holy shit he just took the Seton Hall player out.
-
killer_ewokNow as long as the Orange beat DePaul on Saturday they'll get the double bye in the Big East tourney.
Thanks, Seton Hall! -
thedynasty1998I think St. Johns is fake good, but Lavin has done an outstanding job this year. Give him a few years to recruit and I think they become a perennial top 10 program.

Doesnt that usually prove to be a bad thing in the Big East tourny of late? -
killer_ewok
Eh, I'll take it anyways. And it's less time I have to take off work to watch them play (#4 seed plays at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday and I usually get done at 3:00 so all I have to take is an hour).Hb31187;698896 wrote:Doesnt that usually prove to be a bad thing in the Big East tourny of late? -
Ankle BreakerYeah, that was a big time thug play by St. Johns being down 15 or so and taking a player out like that. Be classy SJ.
-
Big GainMost thought St.Johns would be "good" this year. They had a senior dominated team coming bac.,

I say stay classy Seton Hall your up double digits with 10 seconds off don't go for the show time dunk just dribble out the clock. But the St John's player deserved to be tossed. -
september63This has been SJ all year. Giant killers in MSG and average on the road. No Surprise here.
-
me_myself_iWasn't surprised he got T but the ref had a quick trigger on the toss.

I thought he had the quick trigger on the initial T, the second one was pretty obvious.
The kid that got ejected had more to do with him standing like a BAMF and talking shit after the foul than the actual foul imo. -

A few years? You should just take a look at his class coming in next year. I knew Lavs would be a GREAT hire for the Johnnies, and he's proving that already. -

I agree.
And I find it funny to use the "they were supposed to be good" lines. The ONLY reason this team was picked 6th preseason in the Big East was because of LAVIN.
Such a senior lead team this year, but as juniors they went 17-16 and lost in the 1st round of the NIT. Yeah that team minus Lavs finishes in the bottom half of the Big East. -

Exactly. I hate when people use returning players/seniors as an automatic qualifier for a team being better. Returning those players isn't always a good thing, especially if they aren't that good to begin with.
These Sr's don't have "big game" experience or a real sense of being in pressure situations to begin with, this experience is all new for them. Lavin is a very good coach who fell to unrealistic expectations at UCLA.
He bid his time for the right job to open up and he got it. He's a very good basketball mind and has an excellent coaching staff as well. He's also got a lot of charisma and he can recruit with the best of them... As I mentioned before, his recruiting classes are already ridiculous.
If not for Lavin, St. John's is probably fighting to stay above .500 again. -

What I am saying is....IT'S THE SAME EXACT TEAM. 12 out of 16 players were back for the Johnnies. Off a team that was ONE game over .500. But yet they were just magically supposed to be good? -
centralbucksfanI agree with Wildcats. I think Lavin has in fact done a good job. But he also walked into a pretty good situation, with some fairly good talent. Any decent coach would have had them easily above .500, in middle of pack in Big East. Lavin has taken them a bit further, so he deserves some credit.
Although they are a scary team come NCAA...its also a team that is pretty inconsistant in effort and could easily lose in the 1st round. They seem to show up when they need to, and seem to struggle vs so so teams. Which, the coach should take some flack for. Its easy to get your team up for a big game. The great coaches keep their teams consistant no matter who your playing. If I recall correctly, this was how his UCLA teams seemed to play as well...inconsistant. -
PrescottLavin may have had veterans to work with, but these veterans were 6-12 last year in the Big East. I think he has done a great job.
-
Laley23Having SRs doesnt automatically make you better, but it almost always does. Look at PSU this year compared to last.
The AD for SJ actually came out and said he fired the coach because he thought he was a bad coach, but that if he waited another year he wouldnt be able to because he thought he would win with all these SRs. It isnt all that far fetched to think it is playing a MAJOR part in the turnaround. -
PrescottThese seniors had created a culture of losing. Why would anyone think they would change without a change.

Just saw the highlights of the game....
That was nothing more than a hard, albeit cheap, foul. I agree, Laley, he got tossed for his reaction.
And also, Lavin got tossed for saying "you suck, you fucking suck." lol -

I dont know. Ask the guy who ultimately made the decision that everyone is praising. He seemed to think they would win, so the change had to be made after last season.
