Why Didn't Buford Attack Jackson on the Blocks?

  • Prescott
One thing that struck me during the loss at Purdue's was OSU's refusal to take advantage of the height adavantage that Buford enjoyed over Jackson. Jackson was on Buford from the start and Buford should have taken advantage of the mis-match.

Buford was in foul trouble all game that's why.
  • wildcats20
    No he wasn't.

He had 2 fouls in the first half and finished with 3.

How could he be in foul trouble when the game started:?

Buford played 28 minutes, meaning he only missed 12 minutes of action. So I fail to see how he was in foul trouble the whole game.
  • wildcats20
Oh and the 3rd foul didn't come until 8:56 left in the game.

Great idea. Then he'd have Sullinger and Lauderdale spotting up to spread the floor.

Those two early fouls took Buford out in more ways than one. He never got going offensively as a result. Just because he didn't get his third until later in the second half doesn't mean his game wasn't altered as a result of the two early ones.

That's ok for the rest of the 1st half, which he still played a lot of.

But coming out in the 2nd half he needs to play it like it was a new game. And he did not.

So yes I guess he played tentatively because of "foul trouble," but he was not in foul trouble the whole game.

I guess they all needed to come out differently in the second half. I'm a little less individually case specific in assigning blame for losses, particularly given we have "two" against home undefeateds.

Were I to find any fault with this team, it would probably be that there seems to be a lack of an emotional leader. That guy that makes a huge play and fire everyone up around him and inspires heightened play. Craft makes those plays but treats them as "routine" when by showing a little emotional outburst, could elevate those around him. Others make similar plays and have a short burst of emotion but others don't seem to respond. I don't know if I'm conveying my thought very well, but I think this team could use that spark from time to time.

I agree. Most of Craft's big plays have been defensive and for some reason players don't(for the most part) get as hyped for a D stop as they do a big offensive play. Even though most defensive plays can be bigger momentum plays than offensive ones.

And yeah Willy B is clearly not the reason the Bucks lost.

You cant have a slasher with no post moves and feel for the post just post up and be successful. Its tough to finish when you have no idea where the bucket actually is. Not to mention you would have had Johnson and whoever was on Sully collapsing. If Buford isnt accustomed to the post, and has to kick it out, its a turnover waiting to happen.

It truly takes a special talent to be able to be a wing/guard and post up.

Well that's just the easy answer.

I recall Buford posting up Jackson once and he drew a two shot foul. With the height advantage Buford had, he didn't need refined post moves to score.

I think it is a great idea to take advantage of mismatches. If you do, you can dictate your offense and not allow the other team's defense to dictate your offense.

Do you think the guy guarding Lauderdale (or Sullinger for that matter) would follow him out to the 3 point line or stay in the paint and clog the lane? Buford hasn't shown that he can play in the post and there is more to it than being taller than the guy guarding him.

Why didn't Lord Cornwallis attack the Yanks on the west side?

Sullinger has the ability to hit a 15-18 ft jumper. Lauderdale has been pretty good handling passes from Sullinger when Sullinger is doubled. I think he could do the same if Buford was doubled.

Do you really think that Buford has never worked on post moves. Is OSU's staff that incompetent?

As I heard on Matta's radio show last night, every coach they play would love for Sullinger to shoot 15-18 foot jumpers. He has the ability but he hasn't shown consistency doing so. He is the most dominant post scorer in the country, and you want him to shoot jumpers? What is Lauderdale going to do when he catches the ball on the perimeter? Again, recognizing the double team in the post and making a quick, good pass is not easy. Buford is talented but there is a reason he doesn't do that. I'm 100% sure that OSU's staff isn't incompetent, which is why they didn't have Buford in the post more in a hostile road game against a top 10 team.

Buford doesn't have the mentality to attack smaller guys guarding him, or he would already be in the NBA. He's lazy. He would rather take a jumper off the bounce or swing the ball to someone else.
