Is it just me or has David Lighty's defense gotten worse?

  • holdingout
Has a hard time fighting through screens, late several times getting out and defending the 3 point shooter. Doesn't he usually guard other teams best guard or forward? He needs to step his game up on the defensive end.

    Just you.

I just think he had a bad game. Maybe Troy slept with his GF or something.

It SEEMS like it...but in his defense he is 34 years old.

lol yeah, you gotta believe his knees are wearing down at this point or something

He didn't play his best game, but I didn't think he played bad. I didn't catch the whole game, but the parts I saw he was guarding mostly Johnson, whom he basically shut down, so I don't understand the questioning of his defense.

I listened to the game on the radio, so I couldn't tell you who Lighty guarded, but after the game Painter said Moore's performance was impressive to him because it came against Lighty, and Painter thought he was one of the best defenders in the big ten.

Dynasty is somewhat correct...Lighty did in fact guard Johnson quite a bit. He was also on Moore as well. I don't know the percentage...but he was playing both as I think Matta was switching around players depending who he had on the floor. And OSU does quite a bit of switching on the perimeter. And as Dynasty said, when he was gaurding the 6'10" Johnson, much of it in the post, he was in fact playing excellent defense.
I don't care who was guarding Moore yesterday, the kid went off. Moore is a very, very good college player. One of the most underrated players in the country IMO. He has the ability to elevate over people with his jumper and post them up as he did when he had smaller guys on him. A great offensive player is always going to have th edge. Moore didn't just eat up Lighty, he ate up whoever was on him. And many times, they were in his face. Did anyone see the layup he made when he was going to the hoop against Lighty? It was his day, simple as that.

I agree with you. I've been telling my friends that all year.

On this site I'm sure it is just me, but David Lighty has been overrated for the majority of his collegiate career.

This may get me blasted, but to me he looks apathetic at times...he'll make a bone-headed play and give a look like "really? are you kidding??"--the only problem is is that Ive seen this look A LOT over the last five or six games. I said earlier that IMO, he's the glue that holds this team together when the going gets tough, and we need him to get his mojo back--right away.

Interesting. But I think I'll go with a guy who is a bit more credible...Matt Painter who stated that "Lighty is the best defensive guard in the Big Ten".

Interesting you say this. I think Lighty is a very good player and is one of those "glue guys" that are invaluable to a team. However, I do think he gets a little bit too much credit, therefore, could be considered overrated by some. He now has the label of most wins by an individual at OSU which is obviously very impressive, but it's not like those wins came as a result of Lighty. He just seemed to be at OSU at a very opportunistic time.

Now I'm not trying to take anything away from him, because I really respect his game, but I do think people can get carried away when talking about him.

For example, I think it was the Wisconsin game and someone credited him for sticking around for four years, unlike others who bolt early for the pros, and I wondered if they really thought he had the opportunity to leave.

Yeah, by saying overrated (this is a common misconception), I'm not saying he sucks nor am I insulting his abilities. It has more to do with "fans" than his actual ability to play the game. Your example was a good one.

Not just his defense, but his whole game seems to have gotten worse from last year, from an outside perspective. On the flip side, I think Diebler has improved his overall game a lot this year.

BTW, Ive also heard Matt Painter call Jeremiah Rivers AND Aaron Craft the best defensive guards in the Big Ten...so lets not act like coaches dont just spout things off spur of the moment.

    David Lighty.....an OC resident?

Lighty says "FU" to some on the OC! ;) Guy was unreal the second half tonite. People can say what they want, and I have said this earlier...he is the key to this team. When he plays well, he takes OSU to another level. When he doesn't...they are beatable. Good to see him step up tonite.

Bruce Weber thinks quite a bit of him.

    http://scores.espn.go.com/ncb/recap?gameId=310530194

"I've said since the beginning: I love him," Illini coach Bruce Weber said of Lighty, only the third-leading scorer for the Buckeyes. "I think he's the MVP. He probably won't get it because people aren't smart enough. But he's their heart and soul."

Asked what his team was missing this season, Weber said, "Lighty. If you have a Lighty, a heart and soul who comes every day and does what you need. We just don't have that toughness, that leadership -- that difference-maker."

Matta threw his 2 cents in:

"They should put a statue in front of the Schottenstein Center of David Lighty, just what he's meant to this program, not only on the court," coach Thad Matta said, referring to Ohio State's home arena. "His performance there in the second half was high level. I looked out there [and] it was like he was everywhere."

He should play like that every game. He's a 5th yr senior and suppose to be the leader of this team. I'm glad he played better defense. He still takes some crazy ass shots tho.
