Welcome to Notre Dame, Mr. Stoops.

And as the article stated, ND has been so irrelevant over the past 20yrs, kids could care less about the national coverage. And again, most of it has been negative...then you have a slobbering laughable former coach on ESPN who doesn't help much as most people laugh at LOU. And this coming from someone who actually likes him!rocket31 wrote:
who said some of these teams are not on tv every week? i dont think anyone... as i realize most teams are on tv each week...heck, i think i seen syracuse on television more this year than i did oklahoma...centralbucksfan wrote:
Get off your high horse. College football is on TV everywhere. This isn't 10yrs ago, when ND had NBC, and no other conferences had anything. Now both the Big10 and SEC have TV packages where their top teams are on TV every single week. People can and do buy the college football packages on TV as well. The exposure that college football is getting over the past 10yrs...has caught up with ND easily. Recruits could care less about NBC and ND. If they decided to attend one of the top programs, they will get as much exposure and probably more seeing as those programs have been, and are better then ND. You think over the past 10yrs that ND has got as much PR as OSU, Fla, USC to name a few? If they have, its been negative in terms of searching for a coach, and their on the field failures. This comment reads true in recent article:rocket31 wrote: locally? yeah
nationally? hardly, and not as much as notre dame is on NATIONAL television each week.
no other team is advertised nationally as much as notre dame.
"Once you look past the storied tradition, the majestic campus, the NBC contract and seemingly endless pocketbook, you're left with a school chasing ghosts. You're left with a fan base whose expectations (top-10 rankings, national titles) were forged during another era when the school's independent status still carried cachet and its stringent academic standards were a selling point, not a hindrance. With a few notable exceptions, today's national-title-caliber talent grows up watching specific conferences (the SEC, then Big Ten, etc.), not the NBC game of the week, and they don't necessarily boast high SAT scores, either. Some -- like Clausen, Floyd and Tate -- are bona fide blue-chippers. Others become Tom Lemming All-Americans simply because the Irish recruit them.
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/stewart_mandel/11/30/notre.dame/index.html
however, the fact remains that notre dame gets more NATIONAL coverage than any other...whether you want to admit it or not.
big ten network reaches limited audiences compared to NBC and the fact you brought that up as a comparison is quite amusing.
And sorry, NO, ND does NOT get more national coverage then the top teams, who play in BCS bowl games consistantly, who continue to bring in top 5 recruiting classes, who consistantly are ranked in the top 10 year in and year out. Its not about believing this or that. Its about the reality of the situation.
Now, once ND starts winning consistantly, can get a coach in that is worth a dime...then they could, over time, be in the same breath as those who are currently there and have been there over this past decade. -
rocket31notre dame at 6-6 gets more coverage on espn, yahoo, etc., than undefeated florida or alabama.
notre dames recruiting classes are also great, especially considering the recent transgressions of the program.
so what is the reality here?
i am not talking about success, i am talking about *coverage* and notre dame gets more than any other team (whether it be good or bad) -

athlete37"And again, I'm not confirming or denying anything about Notre Dame or any other job. My point is, this is what I love doing right now."
That's what I read in that article. One of the OLineman said they wouldn't announce today, not sure if he was saying this because he had to or if maybe they decided not announce it because of the banquet or if things still need to be further ironed out. -
thedynasty1998I really dislike Notre Dame (borderline hate), but to say Notre Dame doesn't get more national media attention than other top programs is just blind to the facts. Notre Dame is always one of the leading stories on Sportscenter. They have all their home games nationally televised. They still have a huge alumni base across the country. They are still getting top classes regardless of their record.
I don't get how people can argue that Notre Dame is irrelevant. Hell look at how many topics there are on the Huddle about Notre Dame. There are more about Notre Dame on the front page than all other teams across the country combined.
Kansas is looking for a coach, Ohio State and Cincinnati are top 10 teams, OU is playing in the MAC championship tonight, there was a great game last night, and Mount Union is likely to win another National Championship.
Yet all the talk is about some team no one cares about? -
rocket31
wait, one of the olinemen told you that stoops will indeed be the coach?athlete37 wrote: "And again, I'm not confirming or denying anything about Notre Dame or any other job. My point is, this is what I love doing right now."

...they are just waiting for the right time to announce? -
athlete37No, he said they wouldn't announce a new coach tomorrow. We texted him when rumors starting picking up heavy last night that there would be a press conference today to announce the new coach. Either that's what they have to say or I'm a littled confused.

Laley23Notre Dame is on NATIONAL TV every week (except for when they are on the biggest NON NATIONAL network ESPN).
Fox, NBC, ABC, and CBS are the networks that reach the most. Next would be ESPN and ESPN2. No other cable company is even close.
Versus, BTN, SEC Network, FSN, ESPNU, etc... yeah, its TV and offered nationally if you want to buy the package or if your cable provider purchases it. But they are NOT EVEN CLOSE to the penetration rate that the Big 4 produce and still not close to what ESPN/2 produces. Notre Dames SMALLEST penetration rate for the channel they are on throughout the country in a given season is ESPN. Most are reached by ANYONE with a TV (NBC or ABC). Its a joke when people actually think other teams are on nationally on an equal level. I saw Oklahoma and Texas on Versus twice this year. That channel cant reach half of country I bet. -

Don't disagree. But let me as you this, if you had a CHOICE to watch a game, would it be ND on NBC or an SEC game, or another? Its all about choices. Nobody is forcing anyone to watch ND on NBC. As a matter of fact, I thought I had read recently how poor the ratings were on NBC with ND. Do you honestly think people, besides ND fans, are going to tune into ND over a much better team/game? There is plenty of college football on all those channels. If your in the region of your favoirte team, your going to get your favoriate team/conference. We all know ND is on TV. But many would and do choose to watch other games. 10/20yrs ago....there were not many options. Now, there are many, many more options. Thats the point.Laley23 wrote: Notre Dame is on NATIONAL TV every week (except for when they are on the biggest NON NATIONAL network ESPN).

TiernanND drew < 1% share rating for all games except USC and Stanford (and that's only because everybody likes to watch a train wreck). But NBC execs were actually pleased with the 18 - 45 male demographic numbers of 2.7%. Unfortunately Potato Famine Fans keep tuning in to watch these buffoons and most likely will renew the contract in 2011 no matter who the coach is.
-
karen lotzWhy would they need to renew the contract in 2011?? Good informed post

Mr Pat
You are trying like hell to get that nickname over. It's not very good, taste aside, it's not that clever. You can do better...Tiernan wrote: ND drew < 1% share rating for all games except USC and Stanford (and that's only because everybody likes to watch a train wreck). That is all 100% true. I wasnt really saying people were watching it, just that they were on.centralbucksfan wrote:

ts1227I agree with a lot of what cbf said. Sure, when ND originally signed their contract, college football was not on nearly as much as it is now. The big conferences now have their own networks as well as contracts with the other networks to be out there just as much. Sure, ND is making more money because they don't have to split it with 10-11 other teams, but everyone is highly visible on TV now making names for themselves just like ND. CBS has to be outrating NBC every Saturday afternoon, and ABC probably does about half of the time too.
And NBC extended the contract from 2011 to 2015 last year, so they're stuck with it for a good long while. -

sjmvsfscs08Stoops' Oklahoma contract calls for him to make $4,800,000/year in 2011, so it's not like it's much more money to be making it in 2010.
If I'm Swarbrick, I throw $6,500,000/year at him. Throw another million at him if he wins a national championship. $32,500,000 over five years, who could turn it down? It's not like he couldn't just turn around and ask some alumnus to write a check for it. -
The EqualizerHeard from a friend whos son works at ND and a memo was circulating in his office
-
karen lotzIs this ND's offer or does the memo say that is what Stoops agreed to?
-
The EqualizerMy understanding is this is the base salary agreement, I'd bet he has incentves like was mentioned too.
