New #1 Team

thedynasty1998The days of having "great" teams in college basketball are over. It's just not going to happen because players don't stay in school long enough to really become "great" college players individually. Ohio State has a really good team this year with the mixture of experience and youth. Kansas had that last year. Kentucky was as talented last year as we might see in a long time and I don't think you could classify any of them as great.
Nothing wrong with being considered "very good" these days. And as has been proven, in basketball, any team can beat any team on any given night (for the most part). The best team doesn't always win. But at this point, there are a handful of teams that are unquestionably better than others. -
Laley23SDSU probably goes unbeaten this year. But they will lose in the Sweet 16.
-
swamisezI haven't seen SDSU, do they play on Versus still (Mountain West)?
They are ranked fairly high in the Ken Pomeroy ratings, 18 or 19. Butler last season hovered around the same level if memory serves. -

Florida had a great team, because they stayed. It can happen. Never say never. But its certainly not the norm nor going to have happen often. -
Prescott
Florida was "Great" a few years ago, when Horford,Noah, and Brewer decided to stay another year. Singler and Smith gave duke a chance to be great when they returned for their senior seasons. Ohio State could be great if Sullinger and Buford decide to stay another year. I wouldn't say the days of a "Great" team are over. The days of having "great" teams in college basketball are over. -
ytownfootballEh, the era of great teams in the plural sense is pretty much over. You might get one, two if you're lucky. Were there a chance at several great teams each season it certainly would be a lot more fun.
-
thedynasty1998Good point on Florida.
Yea, OSU could be great if Sullinger and Buford stay, but what are the chances of that? That's my point. I just think back to the Duke, Kentucky and UNC teams of the 90's. Maybe those teams seem to be better because they had guys who established themselves more so over a career than guys today. -

Might be more then you think with the NBA lockout almost a lock to happen. -
swamisezSo there is agreement there are no "great" teams, simply a few teams with potential to be great. Subsequently I use the word decent in regards to OSU and posters go on attack.
I think OSU can be great, it sounds fishy but they need to shrink the rotation a little and concentrate running the offense through three players. Getting touches to 4 or more could be problematic in late game situations. But that is just a non Buckeye homers take.
Duke needs a third, until one emerges, they really aren't going to wow anyone outside of the ACC (I admit the league is putrid) -
ytownfootballPeople are giving you shit about decent...that = average in most heads.

gamauterFoul shooting, that is what I see causing problems for OSU. They have let 3 teams back in games because they shoot bricks.

Ehh, I doubt it, they still have to play BYU twice, who I think is actually the better team, and could very well lose this weekend at New Mexico. -
CinciX12I still stand by the fact that if OSU had a quality OOC schedule then they would be winning these games by 10+ points.
That being said, crazy year for basketball. I don't think OSU is the number 1 team in the country, I still think it is Duke even if they have a loss. -

Duke with Irving, yes. Without him, it's up for grabs IMO.I still stand by the fact that if OSU had a quality OOC schedule then they would be winning these games by 10+ points.

CinciX12It's definitely close. I'm not trying to say it is Duke and then OSU at number 5. I just think they are number 2. You have to let a team have a bad night every now and then.

Oh I agree. But without Irving Duke is a totally different team. A team that is very beatable every night they play, especially if they shoot poorly. With him, I just don't see them losing a game like last night. It's definitely close. I'm not trying to say it is Duke and then OSU at number 5. I just think they are number 2. They could, but I think SDSU is a really good team. I thought they were good last year, and this year are even better. They definitely have the best chance to go unbeaten. -

I would probably agree, going to be a lot of gimme games in there, and yes they are pretty good. I still think they'll stumble once or twice but given the level of competition of the other unbeatens, they have the greatest chance.Laley23;637587 wrote:They could, but I think SDSU is a really good team. Big Gainswamisez;636787 wrote:There are no great teams, only lots of decent teams. That is the point I have been trying to make.
Kansas is a decent team, they will likely lose at Baylor next monday.
Ohio State is a decent team, they will put up solid wins but they are far from a juggernaut some of you Buckeye fans believe them to be.
Duke is a decent team, not great. With Kyrie Irving I think they were a great team, but without him they are very average.
Dana O'Neill wrote an article that echoes those sentiments (while I rarely side with Dana, I think I ultimately have here)
Juggernaut??? Don't be a liar. PLEASE show us where anyone on here used the word "juggernaut" OR anything CLOSE to juggernaut
SO, there are a half a dozen "decent" teams in the country and everyone else is average or below??? Sillyness. -
Big Gainswamisez;636549 wrote:what the hell are you talking about? i can't even follow your train of thought?
Of course I said 25 in my first post? I said he wouldn't be having many games like that.
You said he averages 17, insinuating I said he averages 25. I didn't say he did?
Liar? Misquote? What are you reading?
If you had a desire to be accurate instead of an instigater you would have said it he wouldn't average 17/10 in the Big Ten, because that's what he's averaging now. OBVIOUSLY he won't be able to put up numbers like 25/10 night in and night out in the Big Ten. . -

.
And AGAIN, none of the top teams have played a very difficult OOC schedules. As noted, this was basically Dukes first true "road" game. So its not like OSU is the "only" team that played a week OOC schedules. So what your saying could be used for anyone. We all know OSU OOC schedule wasn't very good. (although they did drill FSU @FSU who just beat Duke btw).
These games are close because that is what happens in conference play more times than not. The team and coaching familarity make for competative games. All you have to do is look at conference scores across the country. -

You want it to be squashed, but continue discussing it. Just leave it alone.centralbucksfan;637918 wrote:And AGAIN, none of the top teams have played a very difficult OOC schedules. As for Duke losing to FSU. That's not a fair comparison as they are a conference game. Upsets happen much more often in conference play than OOC. -

Agree about the comparison. But you know as well as I do, that the OSU OOC schedule has nothing to do with how they are doing in conference play. And if it is, then the same could be said for just about every freaking team. And you just said as much about the conference comparison comment. Simple as that.
