Is Gene Chizik Dumb, or is it Just Me?

  • bigkahuna
I was watching ESPN EARLY this morning and some reported that Chizik was going to meet with the officials this morning to

"Discuss Oregon's style of play." Apparently Chizik wants to tell the officials that because of the speed of play, if Oregon is going to sub on offense, then they should have a fair chance to sub on defense as well.

Are you fucking kidding me? You have until the ball is snapped to sub, if you're slow, too damn bad. That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

I know Oregon plays FAST, but that doesn't mean that they are getting an competitive advantage by subbing but being to quick for the defense to sub does it?

I don't know if he's dumb, but I sure hope Oregon hangs 50+ on them and kicks their ass

Not true. If the offense doesn't huddle but does substitute, the defense is given the opportunity to sub as well. The official who spots the ball will stand over it before the ball can be snapped to allow it to happen.

Sounds like you should brush up on your NCAA rulebook. Again.

I think this is dumb because Auburn does the same thing. If they let Auburn do it, they better let Oregon.
  • se-alum
Auburn definitely gets the opportunity to substitute, though I think it's a stupid rule.

The play is only held up if Oregon doesn't huddle but does substitute. If they don't huddle and don't substitute, then Auburn will substitute with the risk of having too many men on the field or being out of position at the snap.

Yeah not sure if Chizik has been watching his offense this season or not, but they run a very similar offense. Not sure why he thinks one school will get preferential treatment over the other

He's not, he is asking for the rules to be enforced.

Auburn runs an up tempo offense for sure but they aren't on Oregon's level as far as how fast it is. Oregon will snap the ball less than 15 seconds after the previous play ends a lot of the time.

I don't necessarily have a problem alerting the officials to be aware of things, but actually having a meeting with them comes off as a whiny, bitch move. I was indifferent for the most part as to who I cared won the game but this at least gives me a reason to root against Auburn.

Don't you think they're aware of it? and should you not have already prepared for it?
  • se-alum
What exactly consitutes a huddle? I know OSU will huddle the QB,RB, and Linemen, but not the WR's. What do they consider to be a huddle??
  • LJ
I am not sure what you guys are not understanding, but in NCAA football, if the offensive subs the defense has to be given a chance to sub as well. Chizik was having a meeting with officials to ensure that this rule, that is actually on the books, is enforced.

There's always a pre-game meeting with officials to discuss a number of certain things. I'm sure this is just something that Chizik will bring up

The way ESPN reported it, it seemed like he was making a big deal out of it. They made it seem like he wanted something special as opposed to, "Hey watch and enforce this rule closely."

It's funny because this is a Big 10 crew, which I'm sure is used to officiating Michigan, which is probably #2 or #3 only to Oregon and possibly someone else that I'm not aware of in tempo.
  • gerb131
Whats wrong with that? Maybe a little gamesmanship going on dont ya think?
  • darbypitcher22
I don't think either club plays D in this game

5.2.e. While in the process of substitution or simulated substitution, Team A is
prohibited from rushing quickly to the line of scrimmage with the obvious
attempt of creating a defensive disadvantage. If the ball is ready for play, the
game officials will not permit the ball to be snapped until Team B has placed
substitutes in position and replaced players have

Like I said. I was commenting on the way ESPN reported it and what he was asking.

They made it seem like he was emphasizing something special as opposed to making sure they were going to enforce rules on the book. Also, it was a Big 10 crew. With Michigan's Offense, they know what they're doing and wouldn't have to worry about something like this with Oregon.

Maybe it was just ESPN's reporting as opposed to what Chizik was talking about.
  • Sonofanump
    Well this statement is incorrect.

Like I said, The 1st part of what you quoted is what ESPN quoted Chizik as saying. The way they presented it was that he was asking for something special above and beyond the rules.

Since he won a Nat Championship, it must be just you that is stupid?
