How would you grade Ohio State's Season on the field

    Now that we have had time to reflect how do you grade this season. Also forget about the off the field issues this is just about the on the field stuff.

    I would give us an A-/B+. We lost one game and won a BCS bowl game. I would give us an A or A+ but we had high expectations this year. I think we had one bad half that they couldnt over come. How would everyone else Grade this year.

    This year? Expectations are high every year, and never are they far fetched. Next year the expectations will be off the charts, again, with the #1 ranked schedule in the nation.

    I'm with you. I thought a national title was a long shot in the first place. Its hard to complain about a BCS win.

    If you are telling me I can have a non michigan loss next year, tie for the big ten title and win a BCS bowl then I would take that season right now.

    OSU fans are too spoiled.

    Expectations were higher this year because we were ranked #2 preseason. When you're ranked top two preseason you are expected to make the title game. If you're ranked outside the top two you hope to make the title game and the expectations are that you're capable of getting there, but you're not necessarily expected to get there since you don't control your own destiny.

    You're smoking something if you think we'll have the toughest schedule in the country next year. Also, expectations won't be as high because we do have a tougher schedule with a trip to Miami and a trip to Nebraska, along with several of our best players being suspended for the first five games.

    The Wisconsin loss was frustrating as the bucks didn't play up to their potential in all phases of the game. Defense, Special Teams, and Offense. But the loss doesn't look as bad as it first did since Wisconsin finished 11-2 and it is always tough to win in Madison. Other than that game, Ohio State lived up to it's #2 preseason ranking in it's other games.

    Not only that, they blew us out of the water and we fell on our faces trying to come back.

    It's hard to grade the team this year. I guess that I'll break it down by unit.

    Special Teams: D+
    We gave up several special teams TD's this year and had a hard time covering kicks and gave up too many big returns. At the same time we also were near the top in the nation in kick return yards average, and did well in the return game. Perhaps I'm being too harsh.

    Defense: A
    I wanted to grade this defense a bit lower because they didn't leave as big of an impression in my mind as some past OSU defenses, but I think that has more to do with the fact that there wasn't a superstar like Mike Doss, AJ Hawk, James Laurinaitis, or Malcolm Jenkins. However, we finished the season third in scoring defense and second in total defense in the entire nation, and we were near the top in take aways and turn over margin. They also gave up only nine passing TD's all year. Also, this defense suffered more injuries than any I can remember, which makes what they did even more impressive.

    Offense: A-
    There were times where I was very frustrated with this offense, but maybe it's just because I love pro-style QB's and I get frustrated with Pryor's unorthodox throwing motion and poor decision making at times. It's hard to argue with the numbers though. This was the highest scoring team under Tressel averaging nearly 40 points per game. We finished 11th in scoring and 20th in total offense.

    Overall: A-
    The special teams certainly hurt and the overall flat performance at Wisconsin certainly hurts. However, we did finish as Big Ten Champs for the sixth straight season, we dominated Michigan for our seventh straight win in the series, and we won a BCS bowl over an SEC opponent. On top of all that this was statistically the most dominant team (in terms of margin of victory) under Jim Tressel's tenure at OSU. I don't think you can have an A+ season at OSU unless you win a national championship, but this was pretty darn close.

    We lost to Wisconsin, although it wasn't a bad loss like Purdue. Besides that, we pretty much steamrolled through the big 10. The two teams that played us tough, Illinois and Iowa, are the only other big 10 teams that won their bowl game. BCS bowl win and getting the SEC monkey off of our back.

    I largely agree with this, but give the offense a B.
    Pryor was frustrating and why he did improve, he still has a long way to go in terms of decision making, mechanics, and technique. Also, the line was just awful most of the year. No getting around that.

    But, agree on the special teams and the defense. Overall, I'd give the team a B.

    A great year, just had 1 awful game and a few frustrating ones to watch. But, 12-1 and not many teams can say that this year and probably a top 5 finish.

    Doesn't get much better, aside from winning a national championship. Stumbled at Wisconsin, but no shame in that.

    I'm going overall with an A-. If we just look at what Ohio State fielded, the team wasn't as good as several teams in the Tressel era (although posting the second/third best result 12-1 and BCS bowl win). The secondary had major issues this year with injuries and with some DB's getting burned often. Our WR corps were not deep at all and Pryor is still trying to learn the QB position and is behind the curve IMO. However, we did benefit off a relatively weaker schedule (no teams that OSU defeated finished in the top 25- regular season).

    This was also the most productive and potent offense in the Tressel era IMO (although not the best). I still think 2006's offense was better and more talented, but this offense put the numbers up consistently.

    The defense was solid and finished #2 in total defense nationally. They looked solid every game accept for the one hiccup at Wisconsin. Although the secondary was a problem, the defense got it done 11 out of 12 times.

    Special teams was abysmal. Worst special teams I've yet to see Tressel field. Despite the terrible special teams play (which seemed to improve throughout the season), this team finished 12-1, Sugar Bowl Champs, a certain top 5 team, 6th straight Big 10 title and 7th straight win over Michigan.

    So overall they are an A-. The results speak volumes. I would only categorize two Ohio State (Tressel coached teams) as A+ and that would be the 2002 team, obvioulsy; and the 2005 team. Those two teams, IMO, were the best teams at the end of the season in college football.

    And the only reason I'm putting it that high is because of the BCS win. I said before the season that anything less than a 12-0 regular season would be a disappointment in my eyes, and I'm not shying away from that now. The schedule was even weaker than I thought... Wisconsin was the only legitimate team played, and I just don't believe they're the better team (granted, a night game in Madison is a bitch, but OSU is much more talented in my eyes).

    And for the record, I'm about as unbiased when it comes to my teams as it gets. If anything I lean on the pessimistic side, because delusional fans annoy the hell out of me. I just thought with how much the team returned and the way the schedule set up that this team should have gone undefeated. Similar to how I would feel if I was a Boise State fan this year. Yeah, 12-1 is a great year, but they should have gone unbeaten in the regular season, and so they didn't meet expectations.

    Accomplishments aside, overcoming the losses on the defensive side of the ball were pretty impressive, can't forget that. Special teams hurt us, actually got Camp Randall ready psyche wise to whip our ass, just came up short.

    Sounds like this team could go undefeated and win the national title and you'd only give them a B+.

    I can't understand how you could grade the offense at a B when they were one of the most potent in OSU history.

    Obviously the goal for teams like Ohio State, Alabama, Texas etc. is to win a National Championship, but to say that this year was a disappointment and a grade of a B- makes me believe you have unrealistic expectations. People seem to forget how hard it is have a season like Ohio State had this year, let alone a National Championship season. Besides, in any of the three years we made it to the NC in this decade, we did not have to play a team as good as Wisconsin in an environment like Camp Randall.
