Andrew Luck Returning to Stanford

Yea, if there ends up a rookie salary cap, it will most likely start this upcoming season. The Bradford deals are a thing of the past.

I've heard Trent Dilfer say it, Todd McShay confirm it, and numerous other analysts hint at it. Bottom line, sometimes they just talk to hear themselves talk, but everyone is all in on this kid. His pedigree, his leadership skills, ability to make every throw, his football smarts, his size, and his ability to run make him the perfect NFL QB.

Yeah, it's admirable that he's going back to college, not only in it for money, yadda, yadda, yadda.

Fact is, his stock will never be higher and the NFL is almost certainly going to end up with a rookie salary schedule of some kind, which means he's turning down millions in guaranteed dollars that won't be there next year (probably).

Take the money and go back for your degree. You have an opportunity to set up not only yourself, but your children and their children for life.

Common sense would say you go pro now, and work out the other details of your life later when your bank account is fat and happy. :)

Pinstriper nailed it...money isn't an issue for this family. At some point having $5M in the bank, $50M in the bank or $500M in the bank becomes meaningless. Luck's dad could run for governor, senator or congress in WV and destroy any competition. He could probably even beat Rockefeller - that's how much the family is respected. They are likely already worth millions - I'm guessing graduating on time is more important than a rookie contract, which will be there a year from now.

Blaine Gabbert is now the #1 ranked QB in the draft by most experts. Really?
  • Tiernan
Since he was a small boy it's been a dream of his to match skills up against the most beloved program in all of college football the TOSU Buckeyes. He believes he will get that chance in the 2012 NC game. You really hafta give a kid with this kinda commitment huge props.

I wonder who the #1 pick in the draft will be now..who's gonna' be a Panther??

Panthers should trade down - they have too many holes and they can at least give Claussen one more year....they threw him into the fire way too early. He might not be the answer but it was incredibly unfair how they handled him.

    dumb move

Word. Drafting Luck was the best thing that could have happened for Clausen.

This is a bad day for Notre Dame haha Luck stays, the Stanford job looks better for Harbaugh, and Clausen's situation gets much dimmer. Oh man.

Funny thing is he'll only be a RS-JR. He COULD end up being a RS-SR in 2012. Bizarre how good he is.

Bowers, the DE from Clemson and Fairley from Auburn are the 2 highest ranked players now. Don't know if the Panthers need help there or not. Wouldn't be shocked to see them trade down.

I do agree with your first two points but how does the situation get dimmer for Clausen? Its not like they are going to draft Gabbert.

Panthers just got kicked in the nuts. They may have been able to make a Hershal Walker or Ricky Williams type of a trade if Luck was coming out. All depends on if there is a rookie cap or whatever. If that occurs, then picking in the top 3 isn't a curse any longer, it's a blessing.
Fairly from Auburn is a beast - he may be the new #1.
  • Mulva
The Panthers need DE help almost as much as they need QB help, so they'll still be able to fill a huge need.

And Luck is a nerd. I'm not really that surprised that he's coming back for his degree.

If I would have worked harder, I guarantee I could have made it in the NFL. Top 10 of all time, easy.

this reminded me of the walterfootball mock draft write-up about gabbert

Got a $100 that sayes Ryan Mallet now goes.

Bengals shouldn't have a problem tanking another year to get Luck.

I agree with this. It is a bad business decision, but perhaps it isn't business to him. Can't fault the kid for staying in school, but I think you have to get while the gettin's good.
  • Tiger2003
Are people really bashing this kid for returning to Stanford for his senior year?

Is there any chance now that this dings Cleveland from nabbing A.J. Green? Before, I saw McShay's board had Cleveland landing Green. With Luck returning, might Green go earlier?
  • karen lotz
All depends on needs of the teams ahead of the Browns. Panthers, Broncos, Bills, Bengals, and Cardinals are the teams ahead of the Browns. I think all of those teams have bigger needs than a WR so he may still be available at #6. This is a pretty deep draft for WRs overall...Green, Julio Jones, Blackmon. Michael Floyd was projected to go in the 3rd or 4th round according to his evaluation by the NFL.

Matt Leinart and Jake Locker are shaking their heads somewhere.

I've already heard people say nobody compares to him coming out since Peyton Manning. Now, there haven't been a ton of great QB's since (HOF caliber at least, Brady is it), but most of the other star QB's in the NFL right now were very highly touted first round picks. All of these guys are current starters and were first rounders AFTER Manning. If Luck is in this category or better, he's probably worth it.

    Matt Ryan
    Ben Roethlisberger
    Phillip Rivers
    Michael Vick
    Eli Manning
    Aaron Rodgers
    Jay Cutler
    Joe Flacco
    Carson Palmer
    Mark Sanchez
    Matthew Stafford
    Sam Bradford
