Will they hire Stoops?
-
Mooney44CardsNope, not Notre Dame. Youngstown State.
And nope, not Bob. Mark.

ytownfootballActually sounds like a done deal other than crossing the T's and dotting the I's.
Not sure what other coaches in the league make, as long as it's on par I don't see a problem with the amount. -
sherm03I heard Mark was looking for a way out of Arizona ever since that slimeball Sean Miller showed up on campus and took over the basketball team.

Hey now....lets not bash coaches who leave perfectly good situations to take over storied programs and restore them to their proper place of national prominence:sherm03 wrote: I heard Mark was looking for a way out of Arizona ever since that slimeball Sean Miller showed up on campus and took over the basketball team.

sherm03Touche sir...touche.
I just don't like it when coaches say they are happy where they are and don't plan on leaving and then leave....WAIT A SECOND!!!! SONOFABITCH!!! -
PaladinMark Stoops is not a smart hire for YSU. And if he is smart, he'll wait for a I-A job this year or next. Both stand to lose if the AD is dumb enough to think a local boy is the best choice. And next year will be a bummer no matter who the coach is. Talent is down and recruiting has not been good. Stoops simply won't stop the Mooney/Ursuline guys from leaving for MAC or better offers. He'll end up with left-overs again that have made the program average & lacking the ability to make the playoffs. I hope they pass on this dude, for the sake of the program.

I respectfully disagree. All YSU needs is someone to light a fire under the program and get the city of Youngstown excited about Penguins football again. If that happens, the local kids will stay home (who wants to be a loser at Ball State anyways?) and support the program again. And the Stoops name is known throughout the country, between touting the storied history of YSU and the successful name of Stoops, recruits will come.Paladin wrote: Mark Stoops is not a smart hire for YSU. If he has a successful 2-3 years, the program will be back on track and he will probably be leaving for a job elsewhere, but YSU will have gained some national attention again, rather than being amazingly mediocre under Heacock's watch. -
YtowngirlinflaI believe the Arizona Stoops were on the verge of being fired a year or two ago. Probably why he's considering it. Though I do agree it may be a step down but he may also have personal reason reasons for wanting to come back to Ytown. I think it's a great hire. If they want to at least try to get the program built back up they need to do something like this.

vball10setgreat hire for the 'Guins---local boy leads YSU back to national prominence--love it!!!

YtowngirlinflaWonder if they are considering moving to IA in the future????

PaladinLets identify the problem -- YSU loses local talent that goes to I-A programs. Most are really good and are going to OSU, Mich, WVU, ND,etc. No chance at getting those. Many are borderline I-AA/I-A , meaning they end up at MAC schools if offered. Some of those are simply too good to end up at YSU and will star at a MAC school. Others are going to be barely players at the MAC schools and would fit in at YSU. But, local players want a nice CAMPUS school of RESIDENT students and the allure of I-A competition, TV games, bowl games, etc. Many of the Valley players that end up at YSU as H.S. recruits aren't that good and simply contribute to the mediocrity of the program. YSU has ended up with better players coming from other parts of the country. Stoops isn't going to stop Mooney/Ursuline/Harding players who have multiple MAC offers or better from leaving. Be serious. Pope Tressel could only do that with a select few from the Valley. His better players were transfers from I-A programs who came in ( Mays, Cochran,etc.). Recent All Stars ( Mason,Savage, Jones) are out of state players. Translation -- YSU's program will turn up again with good out of state players and I-A transfers coming in. It also wouldn't hurt to be serious about recruiting the REST of Ohio, where some pretty good players can be found. This love affair with the Valley has become old and honestly quite stupid to believe its the answer. Every year players who are recruited from the area quit the team, don't have good abilities, flunk out or get injured or in trouble. The Valley is over-hyped.
Second, Stoops is a LIFETIME DB coach. No experience at coaching other positions which leaves him at the mercy of the QUALITY of assistant coaches he is able to bring in, if he can. The name "Stoops" doesn't mean squat. Being a former Mooney guy doesn't mean squat. Heacock had BETTER credentials as a coach than Stoops when coming in and look at the program now !! If Stoops is hired, I'll have the pleasure of repeating for the gang how I told you so. Mooney connection, college coaching experience, none of it will matter. Next years team won't be very good-- little talent, few schollies available and serious depth problems at QB,RB & OL. And I don't see the "Stoops" name getting Valley players to forget about Akron, Toledo, BG, OU, Miami or even Cincy offers.
Just my humble opinion. -
