Stewart Out At WVU, Holgorsen To Be Head Coach In Waiting

  • rock_knutne
Pittsburgh radio 93.7 The Fan reported today that next year will be Bill Stewart's final as the HC at WVU, Dana Holgorsen from Oklahoma State will be the OC for one year and then he takes over as the HC. Stewart will be repositioned with in the athletic department. The "Hoopjacks" pull one over on Pitt.

    I'll post a link when it's available.

I really would have thought that Doc Holliday was going to get that job. hmm

Not a surprise that Stew is riding off into the sunset. If he wasn't so classy he would have been shown his walking papers a long time ago. Should never hire somebody on emotion.

extremely underhanded move. Apparently this was a backroom deal without Stewart's knowledge and his is PISSED.

If he wants to leave, I'm guessing WVU will pay for his U-Haul truck. He's been terrible. Way in over his head.

It's still fucked up. Either fire the guy, or let him hire his own damn staff.

I called this yesterday. WVU donors and more importantly, new WVU AD Oliver Luck (yes, Andrew's dad) were not sold on Stewart. On the flip side, Stewart had won 9 games a year every year at WVU. His record is actually better than what RichRod's was during his first three seasons. WVU better be careful.... they might get what they deserve, not necessarily what they want (see Nebraska/Frank Solich/Bill Callahan).

He hasn't been terrible, just not up to WVU standards. He's never won less than 9 games and never finished outside the top 25. There are programs that would kill for a coach like that.

Agree 100% and as others have said, Stewart has won at WVU. Oliver Luck seems like a piece of shit if you ask me.

If WVU has higher standards than a coach who wins at least 9 games a year since he's been there then good luck.........they're not Alabama.

I think WVU's issue is he lost games that he shouldn't have lost. They should have beaten LSU this year, He lost to ECU and Colorado in 08. Shouldn't have lost the bowl game against FSU last year.

^^^ Don't tell that to the Hoopies. They are some of the most delusional fans out there. Say what you want about OSU, Texas, USC, Bama and yes ND fans who are just complete loons, but they actually have history to back it up. WVU fans actually put themselves in the same category as those teams. You ought to check ought their boards some time. Truly, I am not exaggerating here.

What "standards" has WVU set exactly? Considering they blew their shot at the title game by losing to a less than impressive Pitt team I'm curious.

WVU isn't going to exactly tear it up when it comes to recruiting, they do OK, but not particularly fantastic. What "standards"?
  • jordo212000
Yeah I know a lot of wvu fans. They're awful.

Stew won a lot of games sure, but they have continued to under perform year in and year out. Not winning the Big East this year should have been reason enough to fire him

I know a lot of WVU. They're just fine.

I am torn on the firing, at least the way they went about it. Not winning the Big East this year was pretty inexcusable.

They have very unrealistic standards. I hope they get a Steve Kragthorpe :)

WVU fans are abhorrent. Who was the poster last season defending some obnoxious behavior the fans had at some of their BB games?

WVU is notoriously a mecca for piss poor fan behavior.

He might be winning 9 games every season, but the program has definitely regressed since he took over. RichRod finished in the top 10 each of his final 3 years, and the team won 11 games all 3 (although Stewart gets credit for the Fiesta Bowl). Stewart's teams lose games they shouldn't and barely finish in the top 25.

It's all about expectations, and he just hasn't met them.

why go through this lame duck season? just force out stewart, who resigns publicly due to "family" or "personal" reasons, and name holgorsen the coach. might not be right by stewart but it'd be right for wvu

This was going to be my question. Sure, every once in awhile they're going to have a Steve Slaton and Pat White, but they're not ever going to have a perennially elite program. By all accounts, Bill Stewart was a good, genuine man and this was a very shady move if in fact he was unaware of it.

I suppose they are like any other fans, some good some bad. The most unfortunate thing for me is having a couple local writers who fit into the idiot category. For example, check out some of this article:

    http://www.parkersburgnews.com/page/content.detail/id/541955/The-best-team-in-the-Big-East--won-t-be-going-to-a-BCS-bowl.html?nav=5064

"The win set up an ironic scenario where the measure of success of the 2010 football season then depended upon the outcome of a game in which West Virginia was not even on the field." (Because they had to watch Connecticut - you know, the team that beat them on the field - play for the title later that night.)

"[The Big East] is a league that often has its credibility as a BCS participant challenged, and accordingly the conference needs to have a tiebreaker which assures that it sends it strongest representative. A team's entire body of work, including nonconference games, should be considered."

"Connecticut is rewarded for narrowly beating the Mountaineers and Panthers on their home field, but is not penalized for having lost to the worst team in the league or performing miserably in its nonconference schedule."

"But any objective observer would conclude that when looking at the entire season the Mountaineers were the best team in the Big East, and were the higher ranked conference team at the end if the season. But instead the league will send to the BCS a team which lost to Louisville by 26, Michigan by 20, and to Temple and Rutgers. Give me a break."

But, at least he got this one right:

"We finished in a 3-way tie in a mediocre league and didn't get the BCS bid. That doesn't seem like a "championship" to me."

And here's part of the explanation about why Stewart isn't high on most WVU fans' list:

"WVU has now finished 5-2 in Big East play five consecutive seasons. Doesn't sound bad, until one is reminded that in 8 of those 10 losses the Mountaineers were favored to win."
  • swamisez
Bill Stewart was not a long term solution there. He is winning off of Rich Rodrigez's talent still. The OSU OC is a good choice for this program. With the Big East still developing, WVU should be 10-2, 9-3 every year.
  • Scarlet_Buckeye
I LOVE groveling in WVU's misery. I think my "most hated list" goes...

    1) Florida
    2) WVU
    3) USC
    4) Michigan

(note: this list is subject to change)
  • thedynasty1998
I went to school in West Virginia for a year and the fans are absolutely delusional. I know Buckeye fans can be bad, but WVU fans are far worse and really have no basis for their expectations.

This looks to be a disaster in the making.
