I know he's just a figure head now, but it really is embarrassing. I know he's a legend, but how can the Penn State president continue to let him coach.
I heard this interview on the Common Man and the Torg yesterday and I was laughing hysterically. But it really is sad.
How is this embarrassing for Penn State? If they were 5-7 every year, then yes. But someone else already pointed out the success the last 5 years. If Pat Devlin had any balls, he would have stayed and been the QB this year. Penn State would have been 10-2 at worst and everyone would be talking about next years starting QB in the spring instead of trying to figure out why they started the Freshman this year. -
Mike Plantagree with those pointing to PSU's recent record - if it was someone else, would a change be warranted? probably not ... and JoePa has certainly earned the right to go when he wants to.

WriterbuckeyeAt some point this setup starts to hurt your recruiting. I think this is that point.
Penn State only has 8 recruits for 2011. They're not listed among Rivals top 50 schools. In fact, they are rated 10th in the Big Ten, just barely ahead of Purdue. Their average rating of players is about 2.5 stars.
Contrast that with Ohio State, which is rated 8th among all schools with 18 recruits, and on track for yet another top 10 recruiting class.
This isn't the first time PSU has had a very low rated class; they've had on and off years for the past several, and that lack of talent is now showing up on the field. If it continues, the program may find itself down for a much longer period of time, before its able to rebound.
If I'm a PSU fan, that has me worried and wanting a change. -
passwordI think that he should continue to coach until he decides to retire because he is Penn State and they will lose their identity when he is gone.I was told that he coaches for free and donates alot to charities, not sure if that is true but that is what I was told. How would you like to be the coach that replaces him when he retires? The new coach will always be compared to him and never get to be himself.

Did you listen to that audio? Paterno is the face of not only the football program, but the University as a whole to many. For him to sound that incompetent is embarrassing. -

His predecessor was a hall of fame coach and the next coach will likely be someone top notch. I repect the man and all he's done, but the notion that "he is Penn State" is flat incorrect. -

I disagree. I'm a pretty involved college fan and when someone mentions Penn State to me, I think Joe Paterno. Whether that is right or wrong, that is my first thought. I think Tom Bradley is the guy that runs everything at this point, but I couldn't pick him out of a lineup. I don't know who their basketball coach is. I don't know who their president is.
For whatever reason, when you mention Penn State I just think of them as boring and outdated, because of Joe Paterno. -

I do agree with your post but maybe I think of Joe Paterno as Penn State because he is the only coach that I have known when it comes to Penn State. You mention boring and outdated and I think that a change of the football uniforms with more color and style could help with that. -

believerI've just finished reading through all of the posts on JoePa.
The very cool thing about living in State College is it gives a person a more "intimate" viewpoint on what's really happening in Penn State football. Imagine ripping Ohio State out of the Columbus map and transplanting the university and The Shoe to - say - Zanesville and you'll understand what I mean by intimate.
At any rate there's plenty of talk on local ESPN radio about JoePa's impact on recruiting but with all due respect to Paterno, they never really come right out and say that Penn State's recruiting issues are due to Paterno refusing to retire. But everyone here knows it.
Someone mentioned above that they root for Penn State simply because of JoePa. The folks here in State College know that Joe IS Penn State. They also know that when he retires or dies (whichever comes first), Penn State will never be the same. It will take years for the Nittany Lions to develop a post-Paterno persona.
In fairness to Paterno, he does far more than roam the sidelines and talk to the players. He's been a mentor and father figure to countless athletes and is very, very generous in his giving back to the university.
I used to loathe Penn State almost as much as Michigan. But in the 8 years I've lived in State College, I've come to respect Paterno and Penn State and the super people I've met in State College. Great place to live! -
wildcats20Honest question here...
Everyone is saying that with Joe Pa being there, it can/does bring recruits to State College. But here's the thing, does he even get on the road anymore?
I'm sorry but if I am a stud HS prospect and PSU is looking at me, I want Joe Pa in my living room talking to my parents. Not some assistant coach saying "Joe Pa is still the coach." I would be looking elsewhere. -
darbypitcher22^^^^
I'm pretty sure he probably goes on the road very rarely, leaving that up to his coordinators and other assistants -
Little DannyTHere are some rumors floating out there that JoePa will be retiring after the bowl game. Some long time PSU assistants like Tom Bradley have been out interviewing for the vacant coaching gigs that have popped up this month. That has rarely if ever happened before. It leads many to speculate Joe will retire and a whole new regime will be brought in.

Now, haven't you seen the Big 10 Network commercial with all the football coaches saying "Come to (name of school)" with him concluding the deal by growling "COME TO PENN STATE!!!" with enough emotion that I expected him to keel over through a coffee table? That's all the proof I need that he goes on the road! -

It would not surprise me if he did retire, but it would surprise me if a whole new regime came in. That is just not the way Penn State operates.
As for the comment on being on the road, I know several high school coaches with kids Penn State is currently recruiting and they all say that Joe has been there every year, including this year. He is more of a closer now and only visits the kids they really want, but he definitely still hits the road. -
karen lotzHappy 84th Birthday JoePa. Knute Rockne had just completed a 9-1 season at Notre Dame when JoePa was born. He is old.

+1 on the birthday wishes -
athlete37I've been seeing more rumors that it's a done deal and Paterno's last game will be the bowl game against Florida... TIWIW

Swamp FoxPaterno is Penn State football and he has more than earned the right to be there. What is he hurting? I don't have any problem at all with Joe roaming that sideline, and as another person observed, "talking to the kids". Joe is so much more than a football coach. He is legendary. There are already too many bad examples that our kids follow. How about we give them a person not only concerned with football, but academics and life after football, and doing things the right way. Give me Joe any day.
-
believer^^^Exactly Swamp Fox. Look at Shithead Pryor & Co. Penn State players are no less susceptible to the temptation of the almighty dollar, but JoePa himself reminds us of an arguably more honorable era in college football.
