I have to say though most of Razorback fans were very classy in their replies to the "article". My fav. reply though is from the sore loser Michigan fan!!

    I find THE article funny.

    I actually lol'd at this:
Q: How do I spot an Ohio State fan?

A: They will be wearing a jersey. It’s not known exactly why, but Ohio State fans LOVE wearing jerseys. This may seem odd to anyone from the South where we tend to leave the jersey wearing to the players on the field but it is a way of life for them. You might catch some Buckeye fans in a T-shirt but you can rest assured you will never see one wearing a collared shirt.
Gotta admit, and I know it's not just OSU fans, but I've never understood the whole jersey wearing thing.

That article is full of fail......

FWIW, I really like the name of the UM fan.....Jimbob. Fitting for an Arkansas article.
  • krambman
I find it funny that he criticizes Buckeye fans and basically calls them classless in an article like that. That article just shows how Razorback fans drip with class.

What's not to understand? You're wearing team colors, right? It only happens in every single NFL stadium, is that also not understandable? I can understand people from Arkansas not knowing that because Little Rock isn't getting a midget league football team soon, let alone an NFL team. They hate everything about Texas except the Cowboys, bunch of hillbillies.

    Wow. Thats my only comment.

Any group of fans who yell "Pig Sooey Razorbacks" whenever they kick off.....shouldn't be making fun of anybody.
  • Con_Alma
I admit I don't understand it either. It's not just because it's school color apparel. There are many ways to adorn school colors without having numbers on you chest and back.

There must be more to it. I just don't understand it.
  • Manhattan Buckeye
    Again, what don't you understand?

If one person wears a sweater that has Ohio St. written on it, and another person has an OSU #45 Jersey, what is the difference?

Instead of asking what there is to it, why not explain what is wrong with it?
  • Con_Alma
I don't know what's wrong with it if anything at all. What do you not understand about my post? It just seems odd to me. That's all.

A jersey is designed for purposes of athletic play. What's the appeal to wear it when not playing when there are other ways to show spirit and support is what I don't "get".

Personally, I just think of it as childish. I used to wear jerseys when I was in 4th grade. I know that many many people wear jerseys, but I just think it seems like you are trying too hard. I know that probably doesn't make sense, but it's the best I've got.

Thanks for your honest answer. I respectfully disagree. I don't have an OSU jersey but my friends that go to games with me in the past do and I don't have a problem with it.

I personally own a Home Thomas Jones Jets jersey and my wife has an Away Nick Mangold Jets jersey (seriously) - we didn't go to any games this year but in the past we were pretty much inline with everyone else. It isn't childish IMO, its part of team spirit. We aren't trying out for the Jets anytime soon. Neither are the tens of thousands of Meadowlands spectators wearing Jets/Giants jerseys.

I wouldn't criticize anyone for wearing a jersey. Believe me, I'm the last person to care about one's wardrobe, I'm just saying for me personally, I don't get the jersey thing. That's why I found that line from the article funny.

Most of my friends wear OSU jerseys to games. Hell, a lot of them have home/away jerseys and different numbers. I know of at least two who bought the Michigan game jerseys. It's all in fun, I get it.

My brother bought a Jim Brown throwback and wears it every Browns game while sitting on the couch watching it.

There is obviously a huge market for jersey's and I'm likely in the minority, but it's just my personal feelings.

This is very reflective, word for word, of my view also.

Did I read that Southern fans leave the jersey wearing to the players? Being around thousands of gator fans here in this part of Fl I see gator jerseys worn all the time by both young and old!!
  • Tiernan
I'm not a jersey guy either. Kinda have found over the years the guys who really are "jersey guys" never wore one in HS or college on the field.
  • Manhattan Buckeye
"Did I read that Southern fans leave the jersey wearing to the players?"

    Yes,

    1) Arkansas isn't the South, one of the dumbest parts of the article.

    2) You are correct that Florida probably leads the country in "jersey wearing", for better or for worse. #15 might as well be pre-requisite for getting into the Swamp. Tennessee has their fair share of jersey people. It is only the few crowds that stick with the formal wear (Ole Miss, Auburn to some degree) that don't partake. I still don't get the misunderstanding, so one wears a team sweatshirt - are they trying to be the coach?

It's not a misunderstanding it's a lack of understanding... at least on my part. I'm not speaking for anyone else.

I don't think team sweatshirts were designed and created for the specific use of a football coach so I personally would say no to your question.

In addition, I don't think someone is trying to be a player if they wear a jersey.
  • thedynasty1998
Another thing on jerseys, you can really only wear them on game days. So, if I have an OSU football jersey, is it proper etiquette to wear it to a football game? Or to go shopping on a Thursday afternoon?

A sweatshirt or a shirt is normal attire. Jerseys are identified to a very specific event.

Not sure if that helps you to understand my lack or understanding?

BTW, basketball jerseys are 10X worse than football jerseys.

I routinely wear my wife's Mangold's jersey walking the dog at night - any day of the week. 1) Vehicles can see it easily. 2) To the extent I'm concerned about miscreants (which I'm not that concerned about), I'd rather be wearing a Jets jersey rather than a dark overcoat, particularly a Mangold jersey.

"A sweatshirt or a shirt is normal attire."

True, but not one with a sports symbol on it. If I wear a Jets sweatshirt to work I look like a douche.

Manhattan Buckeye;599063 wrote:... If I wear a Jets sweatshirt to work I look like a douche.

...anymore so than if you wore a jersey to work?

Do you consider a sweatshirt less "normal attire" than a jersey or do you view them in the same manner?
  • Manhattan Buckeye
    The same manner, duh?

To the extent I'm in a professional setting and I'm not wearing a collared shirt, I sure as shit am not wearing anything with a logo on it.

Explain to me, SERIOUSLY, why wearing a jersey is any different that a t-shirt that says "Property of Cincinnati Reds". Explain it.

"Duh"??? What the heck is that for?

I didn't expect you would wear anything but a collared shirt in a professional setting but you used wearing a sweatshirt to work in your post so I followed it with a similar setting in my question in an attempt to find to what degree you might view a sweatshirt vs a jersey.

I don't know that wearing a jersey is any different than wearing a shirt that says "Property Of Cincinnati Reds".
