Pitt fires Wannstedt

Per the Post-Gazette. Seemed to be an underachiever.

Nice, Baldwin probably leaves for the NFL giving Mike Floyd another reason to return to ND for his senior season.
  • FatHobbit
He was terrible. (Every damn time I picked them in any contest they lost)

Seems odd that they fired him now. Was the AD on vacation or something? It seems to me that you either fire your coach right after the season is over or wait until right after the bowl game. In between the two seems odd to me.

    Finally.

Actually there are reports now that the Stache resigned and will stay in the Athletic Department in some capacity.

Pitt's AD is the one from Nebraska that fired Solich and hired Callahan. I don't possibly see what could go wrong for the Panthers.

    This.

Radio reports here in the Burgh are saying he will resign and stay on in the athletic department. Possible replacements or wish list that they have been talking about on radio are Mike Leech, Russ Grimm and believe it or not, Marvin Lewis. Leech would be the best fit IMO because of his offense, Grimm would bring the same style that Wanny had and Lewis still has four games to coach with the Bungals (unless he resigns). Expect them to act quickly due to this being the hot recruiting period.

Spin it how you choose, if he didn't resign, he was going to get fired. I said from day one this guy is worthless as a head coach. Chicago Bears fan here...and I watched him coach the Bears to nowhere.

Who's spinning the story? No kidding he was going to be axed, this is the AD's way of letting him go with some shred of dignity......resign or be fired.

You could see this coming down the pipe.

I go to school w/ a lot of P'Burgh area people and they were screaming and shouting for this to happen
  • Tobias Fünke
That's too bad. He was incompetent and I loved it.

St Ed DE Deonte Gibson has de-committed from Pitt, not happy Dave is out.

You are. So full of yourself it's unreal

I am going to have to find a new Stache to stare at now
  • LJ
Maybe all the Pitt players will grow stache's in his honor for their bowl game
  • GoPens
Reason he's staying in the Athletic Dept is that he signed a long contract extension after last year and I believe there's still 3 or 4 years left on it. No way they were going to just let him go and pay him for that many years for doing nothing.

    Updated story--Resigned "under pressure"

Yeah he didn't get the job done this year. This would have been an ideal year to win the conference, but they came up small like they usually do.
  • ytownfootball
He was past time for getting the boot. I can think of zero marquee wins for him, I guess you could site defeating WVU a few years ago to keep them out of the NCG but that wasn't even what I'd call getting it done for your team. It's like yesterday that he got hired...all the high hopes for the program, thought he'd be more suited to the college game....man he stunk all the way around.

No, not really. Ask any of the long timers here from over at the Huddle. I argued with many, mainly Palko on just how bad a coach Wanny was. He just verified again what I thought. Simple as that.
  • Ty Webb
Would love to see Mike Leech get it
  • goosebumps
As for his replacement, I'm going to guess Al Golden. Wouldn't need to move far, he's an up and comer and would fit in pretty well with PITT.

I'm gonna vouch for you on this. And those people were idiots - just a quick reminder: lost to Ohio one season, next season started 6-1 and lost five in a row, next season lost to Bowling Green. Who thought that was ever going to end well?

I'm talking about where you said "spin it how you want"

No one is spinning anything...it was reported he was fired, then changed to resigned.

A kid in Daytona is going to Pitt next year, running back Breon Allen of Warner Christian Academy. They play for the state title rematch this Fri. vs Belle Glade Glades Day and Fred's son Kelvin Taylor, who has 900+ yds and 10 TDs in 3 playoff games. Kelvin did this as a freshman last year, with Glades Day winning in O.T. for last year's title vs. Warner.
