Will Pryor's Run Rank with Other OSU GOATs?

  Immediately following the 4th Down scramble by Pryor on Sat. the discussion came up among buddies watching the game whether that play will be remembered along side Krenzel's Purdue Pass, Germaine's TD vs AZ St, Clarett's run down and ball strip vs Miami, Speilman's huge stop vs scUM in '87...etc, etc.
  
  I say it will depend on what happens the rest of the season. Obviously they win this week but what the Bucks do in their bowl game will determine whether this goes down as a GOAT everybody remembers as a defining moment in a very good season, or just another good individual effort.

  Interesting question. If OSU was still in contention for the Rose Bowl or a National Championship, you would have to say yes. But for some reason no one seems to be real excited to tie for the Big 10 championship.
  
  But yes, it was a GREAT play and I do think it is a defining play of Pryor's career. Not that with that play he took the next step or anything, but it might be the single biggest play of his career, to date.

  I agree with Tiernan that it will hinge on what happens the rest of this season, as well as next. IMO,he has been consistently good, but not great--even though he has made some great plays. That being said, the expectations that he faced coming out of high school were virtually unattainable, and even though I realize that some of these were brought about by TP and his family during the recruiting process, there was no way he could have lived up to these expectations. Now, if he goes on to win the NC next season, we'll forget about the inconsistencies that have plagued these last few years. Still, his record speaks for itself, and he should go down as one the best QB's that have donned the Scarlet and Gray.

  What were those expectations? I guess, I just don't see why making a national title game is unattainable or that he couldn't/shouldn't have lived up to those expectations. His legacy can be distinctly different by leading his team there and really, last year he blew it. This year, maybe not so much...Wisconsin is a pretty good team. A lot hinges on next year and he still may fulfill all that promise, but if not, I don't think you can crutch on the expectations were unreasonable. He was the #1 QB in the country, playing on one of the top four or five teams in the country over nearly any period of time you want to consider (including the present/recent past), playing on a team that arguably has as much more/talent than any team on its schedule (and maybe in the entire country), and he gets four years of starting experience. That is set up pretty well for success. All the conference titles are nice, but I'd have expected a title shot at least once.

  Agreed. It's not on the level of Troy Smiths pass to Gonzo against UM either (2005).

  It's nowhere close to the Holy Buckeye play vs Purdue.
  That single play put Ohio State ahead, would have resulted in a loss had it failed, and kept Ohio State undefeated.
  
  Pryor's run didn't do any of those things. Had he gotten stopped, OSU still had time to come up with a stop on D and get another shot on offense as there were still 4 minutes left. It was a nice clutch play, but it doesn't compare to the Holy Buckeye play, or even Germaine's pass in the Rose Bowl...

  As for his expectations, I don't think they have been unreasonable by Buckeye fans. I don't think many expected him to start as a freshman, which he did. I think most would have been happy with a Rose Bowl victory over Oregon his sophomore year, which he accomplished. As for this year, the national media kind of threw him into the Heisman discussion, but honestly I don't think many Buckeye fans thought he was that deserving.
  
  As for the results of this season, I don't think you can pin that Wisconsin loss on Pryor's play. So if they win out, I think he actually has exceeded my expectations at this point in his career.
  
  Coming out of HS everyone knew he was a great athlete that had flaws in his passing game. That's exactly what we've seen.

  Given the situation, right after Posey's drop in the end zone on 3rd down (and I was throwing stuff at my TV), Pryor's run was huge.
  
  It was the difference between a respectable 11-1 season, BCS bowl berth, 6th straight Big10 title, and:
  
  1) 1st non-BCS bowl since 2004
  2) 1st 2-loss Big10 season since 2004
  
  No way they get the ball back and win if he doesn't make that play.

  It won't go down as great as the others mentioned but assuming Pryor can continue winning and do special things next year it will go down as part of his highlight reel, i.e. Troy Smith. He did make it look easy.

  I can name a few plays that were bigger than that one. Although, it was a huge play.

  2. Smith to Robo-2006 Penn St.
  3. Beanie run vs. Michigan-2007
  4. Even Pryor's run against Wisconsin his first year was a bigger play to me.
  
  But, still, awesome play, just not GOAT level.

  I think the biggest reason it isn't the same is because he didn't score. It kept the drive alive, but all if not most of the memorable plays were for touchdowns. As ptown said, the run against Wisconsin his freshman year was bigger because it was a game winner.

  Why do people always give TWHPIH credit for the pass to Gonzo in '05? That was an incredibly shitty thrown pass at a critical juncture in the game and AG makes one of the most acrobatic catches I've ever seen in CFB history.

  Iunno, maybe it was Troy ability to elude in the pocket and shake off the defenders?
  Gonzo made an awesome catch as well, but never would have happened if Smith would have moved around and out of the pocket.

  I'm not sure if any of those plays were BIGGER given the circumstances of each game. While I think the plays were BETTER (Smith to Gonzo, Smith to Robiskie), the fact that it was late in the 4th quarter on 4th down makes this play bigger. If he doesn't get that first down, it is likely we don't win the game. If Smith doesn't hit Gonzo or Robiskie there were still other downs and time left.

  Don't forget, not long after that Pryor hit Sanz for a big pass down to the 2. That play had Smith-to-Gonzo written all over it: big road game, share of Big10 on the line, late 4th qtr drive, QB escapes the pocket, WR makes acrobatic catch. So you could give Pryor credit for two big plays that last drive- and if Posey doesn't drop that long pass in the end zone we're talking about a great TD pass instead.

  Why would I get excited about a run from TP?? That's really all he has going for him. The comments made about being on one of the top teams in the country were my comments a few days ago. His missed throws far exceed any drops his receivers have had in his three years at TOSU. He has above average speed but below average qb smarts and off the bottom of the chart on the intermediate throws. His deep ball is average/above average.
  
  JT said in the beginning he wanted TP to not make mistakes in running the offense. and kept it simple for him. Had hoped that would change and open up a bit, but seems to methe apron strings are still attached.

  The second part of this page has to do with Prior. If we beat Michigan, Pryor will have started as a freshman and have a record 30-4, gone 3-0 against Michigan and a share of three big ten titles. I'm not saying he's perfect or can't improve but some people are really really really spoiled if that's not good enough.
