Big Ten Power Rankings

Looks like this paper (Minneapolis) will be updating every week. Pretty interesting thoughts/quotes on all the teams. They really hit spot on with my thoughts a lot of the time. The first ones are about what I would have, but Id put Wisky ahead of Minny (they are tied).

The first one (Tom C) is just an obvious "homer" considering who he has number one and number two.

Have to admire those folks for putting their stupidity right out there for all the world to see. :)

Im sure they will quickly see where teams should ACTUALLY be placed after a few more games.

    IMO, right now..

    #1 OSU
    #2 MSU

    Everybody else.

Of course, Wisky and Purdue will have a say in the conference as well. Illinois has to prove it to me first. They haven't been legit since D-Will and Dee Brown.

Indiana is rising, but won't be a major threat to any of the top teams until next season.

There must be something in the water at Illinois. Both football and basketball have enigmatic coaches who sometimes seem to get the most of their talent, but often under-perform.

On paper, Illinois is probably the third best team in the conference.

We'll learn a whole lot more about Minnesota tonight against UNC. They have the talent and experience to pull off an upset, similar to beating Louisville two years ago and Butler last year.

As a whole yes, they wont challenge anywhere near the top 5 imo. But within those top 5, I think Indiana will knock 2 of them off. OSU being the least likely and MSU impossible (only on road). But I think they can win 2 of 4 at home versus the top 5. Illinois, Purdue, and Wisky being most likely with a slim, slim shot at OSU.

Minnesota is really impressing me today. They're going to be a tough challenge for everybody in the Big Ten.

Wasn't at all impressed with Illinois ability to handle the press.

Thing about the Big 10 is you never know what's gonna happen. I mean each team has that very physical style that just makes it a total grind. This conference is definitely going to get 6 teams into the Dance this year though

Great night for Minnesota, well done Tubby.

I'm sorry but if you don't have OSU at least at #1 or #2(same with MSU), then your knowledge about college basketball is very questionable.

How would you rank the teams going into this week (11/22)? My rankings:

    1a. Michigan State
    1b. Ohio State
    3. Minnesota
    4. Purdue
    5. Illinois
    6. Wisconsin
    7. Northwestern
    8. Indiana
    9. Penn State
    10. Michigan
    11. Iowa

3/4/5/6 are all tough to say at this point. I put Minnesota 3 because they have the best resume thus far, Purdue 4 because they have probably the most talent, Illinois 5 because they went out and beat Maryland (but lost to Texas), and Wisconsin 6 because of the loss to UNLV. Could probably make them interchangeable at this point though.

Minnesota was VERY impressive against UNC. They have good guard play, a shooter and athletic bigs. I was about as impressed with them as I was Ohio State. The Big 10 is going to be really tough this year at the top!

It's tough to say this early in the season off one game, which is why I think the win over West Virginia was just as, if not more important, than the win over UNC. One game could be a fluke, or UNC could be vastly overrated (this could be the case right now ... end of season maybe not). But two games I think solidifies Minnesota as a contender this season. Especially once they add Joseph back into the mix.

Yea, but as a Buckeye fan, I got excited over one win. In basketball sometimes you can tell if a team is legit good or fake good regardless of who they are playing. There are just certain things you look for, and Minnesota seems to have it. I don't know if they are "elite", but I certainly expect them to be a top 15 team all season. Plus, they have probably played as tough of a schedule as anyone at this point.

Minny beating UNC is one thing, but coming back and then beating WVU was even more impressive. UNC is a big question right now...but still a good win at the very least. As mentioned above, beating WVU was definately even more impressive. I have always been a Tubby Smith fan. I personally think the guy is a quality coach, no question.
Just another reason I see the Big Ten champ having 3-5 losses. Winning on the road won't be easy at all. And a home loss or two could very well happen to any of them as well.
  • hoops23
Tubby is undoubtedly a quality coach. It was a great hire for Minny and it's paying off.

As of right now, my Big Ten rankings would be:

    1) Ohio State
    2) Michigan St (this close game with Chaminade dropped them from 1)
    3) Minny
    4) Purdue
    5) Illinois
    6) Wisconsin
    7) Indiana
    8) Northwestern
    9) Michigan
    10) PSU
    11) Iowa

lol u were watchin that Chaminade game waitin to post this werent you.

They struggled, but until OSU passes MSU on rankings that matter... idk how they should be ahead of MSU in the big 10 rankings
  • hoops23
    Yes, yes I was :)

Osu WILL be #1 in the country here within the month though. MSU and Duke both play quite a few quality teams and may slip up. and OSU should steamroll through their schedule

U must not have looked at Duke schedule. Duke has a tough game tontie, and then MSU. After that, they play no one until ACC starts.
  • Hb31187
KSU and MSU are enough to have a strong potential to slip up, but i was under the impression they played more than those 2 coming up. Guess not
