Enes Kanter Inelgible at Kentucky

centralbucksfanBig blow to UK, no question. Can't say I am too surprised. If he received as much as was being reported, I just couldn't see him being eligible. There were certainly some questions as I know his former team wasn't too happy he bolted. But when you take a chance like this on a foreign player, this is what you must be prepared to deal with. Honestly not sure they are worth the hassle to be honest. Especially if they had been associated with any kind of pro team overseas.

Laley23So is Enes Kanter a FA right now to go sign with anyone in the NBA? Or do players have to go through the draft process before they can sign?
-
karen lotzHe will have to go through the draft.

Great question. No idea. -
thedynasty1998I'd imagine he goes back to Europe for this season and then declares for the NBA.
Whether the NCAA made the right decision or not, at least they did it prior to the season starting so everyone can move on accordingly. -

Kanter can of course declare for the NBA draft in the spring since he will be a year out of high school. -
Laley23^^^I thought he had to go through the draft, but isnt that inaccurate since he is from Europe. The HS/age limits dont apply to them do they? I thought a foreigner could enter the league whenever they wanted.

karen lotzBut didn't he go to a prep school in the US and graduate from there? Maybe that would be why he'd have to wait?

Yeah, that would make sense actually. If you graduate from the US you have to wait. For some reason I didnt think he did so, but Ill be the first to admit I havent followed the kid at all until he committed to UK. -
GOONx19Huge blow. I'd say UK's still looking like a Sweet 16 team, but I don't know how far their guard play can carry them. I'm glad they got this over with though. College basketball is in for another good year.
-
cats gone wildHuge blow. And I must agree with cbf for once. It was worth a shot though, but what happens if UK doesnt win the appeal.... with his scholly?

Oh come on, we have agreed more then once. I am sure the scholly would carry over for future use. -
Azubuike24Watching the game tonight, this year might become a big time "what if" they had Kanter or if Daniel Orton would have stayed.
Knight
Lamb
Liggins
Miller
Jones
UK hasn't had this much speed, length and skill at the wing position in a LONG time. Not since the 97 team that lost in the NCAA title game. -

Well shit, do you know how many teams could play that "what if" scenario every year? What if Turner returned for OSU this year? Or Oden/Conley stayed? It is what it is and it was college basketball is about in this day and age. -
Laley23^^^Its a lot different when a guy is ruled ineligible after he arrives in the US and when your 6th man goes pro.
Its not like Az is talking about Cousins and Wall still being around. -

Not when there were questions about his eligibility from pretty much the get go. Either UK didn't do their homework on Kanter, or they knew they were taking a huge gamble in the first place with his eligibility.Based on the article below, they knew they were taking a chance. So that "what if", they knew there was a chance he might not suit up this year.
And I am sure Cal had an idea that Orton wasn't going to stick around either. Again, this is what you get with Cal is your coach. There is going to be turnover each and every year.
All that being said, I am sure UK will be just fine though. They have talent.

Azubuike24I wasn't playing the what-if in that sense.
I mean "what if" last year's entire team stayed?
My point was that many people questioned, even with Kanter, if this team had "it." Most UK fans did too. After last night, it's a gut feeling that they do, but are going to be hampered all year by the woes of the interior. That's all.
It would be different if it was clear that Kanter wasn't going to make a big difference, but the loss of him stings even more now that I see what else is out there. -
SportsAndLadyYou can tell they have "it" from their first game against nobody?
-
centralbucksfanSportsAndLady;556089 wrote:You can tell they have "it" from their first game against nobody?
Agree. I think OSU is pretty good..but I am taking absolutely NOTHING from the exhibition game, nor the game last nite. I gotta see "it" against some quality before I get too excited. Too easy to get a false sense of security in these early games against nobody. -
Azubuike24ETSU isn't "nobody." They are a decent mid-major, returning their top 6 from an NCAA team last year. They played UK in RD1 of the NCAA's last year.
I see what you are saying, but I also think I'm a decent judge of talent, and even I questioned how this team would look compared to last year. It's different, no doubt, but many of the weaknesses of a year ago (offensive flow, versatility, basketball IQ, poise) were covered up by talent. This team seems to be an upgrade in all of that, and even though they don't have the talent, relative to the rest of the NCAA, they have enough of both to do great things. That's why I made the comments about Kanter. I mean I can't say enough about the trio of Lamb, Knight and Jones. Unreal. -
SportsAndLadySorry azu you can't tell if a team is going to be good at all from an exhibition game. You can try to justify it, but it just sounds dumb.
-
Azubuike24This wasn't an exhibition game. It was a game against a decent mid-major who has a good chance at making the NCAA Tournament. I'm not sure where you're at but the season has begun...exhibitions are over.
-
SportsAndLadyTeh point was from one game. Exhibition game or first game or whatever, to say they have "it" from ONE game is impossible.
-
Azubuike24I guess we will see...but it was more of an instinct on my part. I didn't really think people would say "I definitely agree, they have it."
