Who Will Be The Next Head Football Coach At Notre Dame

  • rock_knutne
^^^^^I think you're right about Stoops. ESPN is also saying that Stoops is willing to listen, which to me sounds like he's the next HC.
  • sherm03
According to UHND's message board, Stoops was asked in a teleconference if he was leaving Oklahoma. He responded by saying,

"I intend to be at Oklahoma. That's the only thing I'm looking to do. I will never confirm or deny whether I talk or not talk to anybody and I won't interview for any jobs."

    Very interesting question skirting there.

I don't think ND is as a prolific job as it once use to be.
  • darbypitcher22
Fitzgerald signed a 7 year extension at Northwestern and says he has no intentions of leaving until he's ready to retire. Take that for what its worth.

Iowa will probably try to work out an extension for Ferentz here either before the bowl game or after.

You call Brian Kelly, but he's not leaving this year. He will leave Cincy, most likely when the Michigan job opens up next year. Can't see them extending that job to Les Miles after he rebuffed them once already.

Urban Meyer has said emphatically that he wants to be the head coach at Florida(yes, I know this means nothing, Nick Saban said the same thing about the Miami Dolphins). I can't see him leaving the situation he has there with all of the quality athletes to recruit so close to the school.

ESPN said Butch Davis is on ND's short list.

    ^^^^

After really being pretty much mediocre for the most part @ North Carolina?

I mean, yeah, he's won 8 games the last two years at North Carolina, but I think people were expecting a lot more in whats been a pretty weak ACC, eventhough Carolina isn't really a football school.

I know coaches "lie" quite a bit, but Stoops sure makes it sound like he isn't going anywhere:

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/football/ncaa/11/30/stoops.oklahoma.ap/index.html

As Kirk Herbstriet said on ESPN yesterday, there is the ND wish list, and then their is reality. ND needs to be looking at guys like Kelly, the guy from TCU and others that fall into the up and coming area IMO.

    CBF,
While the untrained ear would hear what Stoops said and assume he's not interested...someone who truly listens sees that Stoops left quite a bit of wiggle room in that teleconference.

Here's a link with the audio...
    http://www.normantranscript.com/localnews/local_story_334153008.html

Notice Stoops says, "I intend on staying." At one point a reporter is laughing and says, "Why won't you just say no?" But Stoops will not do it.

Bottom line is, they are probably still undergoing negotiations, and Stoops will not say one way or the other until it's a done deal so that if things fall through, he is still in good graces in Norman.

Remember Nick Saban and Alabama? Stoops' comments are far from a refusal.

For those who think admission standards are the cause, you are wrong. Notre Dame is bringing in top recruits yearly. They just aren't getting "coached up".

Notre Dame is still prestigious, and pays as well as any other college job out there. Don't fool yourselfs into thinking any different.

I don't see the similarities between Stoops and Saban in THIS situation.

Saban said, "I am not going to be the coach at Alabama."

I don't either, to be honest. And again, I didn't say he was or wasn't...just passing along that he did address it. Herbie also spoke to him, and he told Herbie he wasn't going anywhere.
Take it for what its worth.
As for Saban...I would like to think most coaches learned from his blunder as he brought quite a bit on himself for his comments.
Again, maybe he is, maybe he isn't. But everytime a big job opens, we keep hearing this "big names" come up. We keep hearing "so and so" is doing this or that. When in reality, WE KNOW NOTHING. Its all internet rumors, nothing more, nothing less.
And lets not forget another thing...some coaches can, and will certainly use things like this, to wake up the school they are at so they can get the money/extensions they want for future security. Its a cut throat business, both ways.
  • killer_ewok
I don't put much stock in what Herbstreit says anymore. Remember the Les Miles to Michigan situation? Herbie's "conversations" and "insider info" doesn't mean much IMO.
  • devil1197
Seems like Stoops is staying put.

I am pretty sure he just said "I won't be interviewing for any jobs".

Unless he is a total liar, ND better move on down the list.
  • ytownfootball
Herbie...hell if anything was learned by any coach it was not to say anything you wouldn't say to a pile of microphones. I don't think Stoops would have forgotten that.

Figured that would be the first thing someone said when I brought Herbie into this.
Think what you will, but Herbie is one of the most respected college football analyst out there. I don't believe he ever lied about Miles. Just didn't get good info, obviously.
And, when he was on college football live last nite, he said he spoke directly too Stoops....not to a source.
Again, Stoops could be lieing thru his teeth. Which, I quite frankly don't have a problem with because what are they supposed to say in a situation like that? They are in a no win situation when jobs come open, and people link them to it. It is what it is and the nature of this business.
But the one thing I do believe, is that NOBODY here, has a clue whats going on at ND and who is involved as far as a coach is concerned. Its all pure speculation based on rumors flying around.

Take Stoops off the list he is not coming to Notre Dame.

Stoops just got a bonus and an extension. You think he's trying to parlay this into getting more from Oklahoma?

What that says to me is that he won't be interviewing for any jobs. There is no interview when a job is offered to you. It's not like ND invited him to South Bend to talk about his plan on how to resurrect the Irish. Swarbrick probably said, you're the guy we want...let's talk salary. That's not an interview...that's an offer. So no, he won't be interviewing for any job. But he never said he won't entertain offers.

Listen to the audio, and pay attention to what he isn't saying. If this all comes back and I'm wrong, I'll take the heat for it. But it just sounds to me like he chose his words very carefully. Hell when the reported asked him "Why can't you just say, no?" He wouldn't do it! That speaks more to me than him saying "I'm not interviewing for any jobs" or "I intend to stay at Oklahoma." He had the chance again to say, "I will not be the next coach at Notre Dame" and he didn't take it. Period.

Lots of coaches say that, then get offered 6 million dollars a year, and say cya later.

Swarbrick just used Bob Stoops' exact quote from last week during this ND presser.

When asked why he hadn't begun contact possible replacements prior to Weis' firing, Swarbrick responded, "We had a coach."

Last week when asked about his interest in the Notre Dame job, Stoops responded, "Notre Dame has a coach."

    Hmmmmmm....coincidence?

Uh, coaches like Stoops, Meyer and even Kelly won't interview...nor should they have to. Their resume speaks for them.
