Does Toby Gerhart's skin color surprise you?
-
SportsAndLadyWhen you found out that Gerhart was tearin it up this year, and in the Heisman race, then found out he was white, did it surprise you?
-
charliehustle14Not really. Jacob Hester was a white guy who was a hell of a RB in the brutal SEC a couple years ago....and that was more surprising to me.
-
sherm03Yep...and I also found it ironic his name was Toby. As soon as I heard his name mentioned...I pictured LeVar Burton.
Then white guilt set in... -
BlueDevil11No, I have seen many white people before.
-
DaBrowns41Nope. White people have been successful longer anyway. I'm not surprised.
Big joke. -
paul_banksI can't remember the last time a white tailback was considered Heisman material. Another position is a cover corner that is good and a white guy. If they start there, eventually they will be moved to safety because of assumptions.
-
newarkcatholicfanHim being white and getting a shot to be a running back at the D-1 level is what I find shocking.
-
newarkcatholicfanJohn "Cappy" Cappelletti 1971-1973
There was a white player from Harvard a little later(I think Harvard) that was getting a lot of ink but never wass a serious contender for the H-Trophy. -

Not sure, but you may be thinking of Ed Marinaro from Cornell. He got a little Heisman ink and was drafted in the second round in 1972.newarkcatholicfan wrote: John "Cappy" Cappelletti 1971-1973

I did have the correct league though. -
dwccrewI don't see people in terms of the color of their skin. -George Costanza
-
Big GainThe vast majority of topic starters don't either.
-
sleeperI have to admit I kind of was. I hadn't watched him until the ND game, but I just assumed he was a light skinned black man. When I saw him with this helmet off, I was kind of shocked, but he's easily the best RB in college football. He looks good in Scarlet and White, he'd look even better in scarlet and gray.
-
steel_curtainNot with a name like Toby.
-
butkus51After I saw him playing left field for the Stanford baseball team, I was pretty sure what he looked like.
-
tcby99No not really Stanford always has a nice mix of student/athletes

vball10setwith a name like Toby Gerhart?? no way...it sounds like a name right out of Leave It To Beaver
-
TBone14I knew he was white because I watched him tear it up last year. This guy isn't a one year wonder..he had almost 1400 total yards and 15 TDs last year and was First Team All Pac-10. And that was only in 10 starts plus Anthony Kimble got 120 carries for 745 yards last year. He could have done this last year as well.
-
Soda PopinskiWith a name like Toby, not really.
-
SportsAndLadyYeah well Eddie George doesn't scream black guy lol
-
SageYea, I was surprised.

He was black?!?!?! WTFSportsAndLadies wrote: Yeah well Eddie George doesn't scream black guy lol -
bigkahunaSomewhat..usually when you think white running back you think of a bruiser FB like Alstott or Schmitt form WVU a few years ago. I honestly can't think of a white guy playing running back and doing that type of damage. Think about it though; he isn't the speedy type back that we are so accustomed to seeing in the game today. He does remind me of a bruising full back with a little bit of gitty up to him
