Bad day for Kent State

  You're an idiot. Most of the students who were shot were simply going to class. I had a mid-term schedule that day. One of the students who was shot was in my class. If I had been with him at that exact moment, I might have been shot, too.

  So, what you are saying is that a few protesting students spoiled it for some innocent students? Because, if the protesting students had vacated the premises like they were ordered, no KSU students would have been killed on 5/4/1970; protesting ones or passersby.

  What difference does it make? The protesters were right. If I knew then what I know now, I would have been in the front line protesting. The ones who should have been killed were Nixon and Rhodes.

  No one should have been killed one way or the other Nixon/Rhodes included. I know you agree with that too.
  
  I worked with a guy who was a guardsmen on that day, not subject matter he cared to discuss other than it changed him for the rest of his life. There were no winners on that day. Though blaming one or the other might make one feel better, whose to blame is of little consequence when all things are considered.

  It makes all the difference. They were breaking the law. They were not "right" as you put it. Breaking the law is not "right" is the United States or any other country in the world. Oh, you mean I ideally they were right? Well, when expressing your ideals breaks the law, you pay the price. In some countries, the result would have been much worse; much sooner.
  
  Bottom line is: no violent protest of the government, no deaths by Taylor Hall on May 4th.

  If people in a free country can't protest, then who can? This isn't communist China. The students who were protesting were on their own campus where they belonged. Nixon was responsible for this disaster when he expanded an already unpopular war.

  Does protesting include burning government buildings "on their own campus" just a day or two prior? I mean, where did these students expect it was leading?

  There many places in the US that you must gain a permit and permission to assemble at. You can't simply gather at your will and protest anywhere in the US and we are not communist. Don't suggest that freedom implies unlimited protest rights. It doesn't .
  
  It wasn't simply "their" campus. It was all of our campus. There's a difference.

  When the U.S. government gets its citizens into an unjust war, then it is time to protest. I'm glad they burnt down the ROTC building. Nixon's war machine shouldn't have been on our campus.

  Nobody was dying for my freedom in Vietnam. It was a war the politicians cooked up for their own benefit. More than 58,000 American soldiers died for nothing.
