I agree with the above, top to bottom, Pac10 is the best conference, much more balance.
The difference is that the top three teams in the Big Ten would get destroyed by the top two teams in the SEC and would probably lose handily to LSU.

I'd like to see SEC teams play in 30 and 40 degree weather in November. Some of their game plans would change IMO. Football in general seems to be seeking 'sterile' environments. Part of the game should be dealing with the elements. If you want sterile, play arena football. (sorry about the digression)
By the same token, let's see the Big 10 play games in 100-degree weather in humidity that would suffocate an Italian.
Im sure they would be just fine considering most schools get their players from California/texas/florida. So playing in the hot/humid weather wouldn't be that big of a deal.

All it showed was that the SEC is better than the ACC, which all football fans already knew.

LSU? Their 8-3, haven't beat a top SEC team, and played a terrible OOC with the best W being against Washington who won't be bowl eligible.

I am sorry but the SEC is very top heavy this season with Florida and Bama. No one is debating that they would contend and beat basically every conferences best teams imo. But then there is a drop off to LSU who again above stated that their not above other conferences teams. Ole Miss is next who was a HUGE flop possibly the biggest all season.

Its two great teams and a bunch of regular teams with 7-8 wins.

Years past, yes. This year, no way. Bama and Fla are good..but their offenses are nowhere near what they were in the past. They are very defendable now, which can keep a team in a game. LSU comment is laughable.

The SEC is top-heavy? Florida and Bama have had several close calls in-conference this year. Florida very nearly lost to Arkansas. Bama had to block a FG at the end of the game to beat Tennessee.

You would think if it was that top-heavy those two teams would have steam-rolled everybody they played.
  • devil1197
Yes the SEC is top heavy. Every team no matter what season will have a close call or two in BCS conference play.
  • darbypitcher22
    SEC is way top heavy

PAC-10 > SEC, at least this year.

Interested in how you determine that. There probably isn't a lot of difference between the middle and bottom of each conference, but the ceiling is certainly lower for the Pac 10. Six teams had a realistic chance at the title with three weeks left in the season and a couple of those have been beaten by 27+ points twice each.

The Pac 10 is 8-7 against other BCS conferences with one really good win (USC over Ohio State). The SEC is 10-4 with a couple good wins (Georgia over GT, South Carolina over Clemson, Alabama over Va Tech).

This topic has became laughable. The PAC10 being better than the SEC makes me ROGL. How have the top teams from this conference done? USC getting it handed to them by Oregon/Stanford, and getting beat by Wash. Oregon got beat by BSU, and walloped by Stanford, Stanford and Arizona have had their downs. The PAC 10's best teams have 2 or more losses each. The top heavy comment SEC comment makes me ROGL, and that the Big 10's Iowa and PSU would beat LSU.....laughable. Its pretty simple, look up the SEC's OOC schedule records vs. other conferences, and how the SEC's unranked/ranked teams beat up on other conferences ranked teams.

Thanks Cleveland Buck for finding this out. It appears to me that the SEC does have a slight edge in talent over the years. However, it is pretty close. I am Surprised that the ACC is second on this list. And it appears that the BCS should maybe be made of 5 major conferences. There is a big drop in the number of players in the NFL from the PAC-10 to the Big East.
Another way to look at this is the average number of players on an NFL team from a particular conference.
SEC - 8.97 players per NFL team
ACC - 8.25 players per NFL team
    BTen- 7.50
    B12 - 6.59
    P10 - 6.28
    BiEa - 3.50
    MW - 2.53
    WAC - 2.09

Now maybe "cats" has a paw to to stand on.
  • devil1197
cats, what makes you think LSU would beat PSU or Iowa? What makes you think its laughable?

I'd really love to hear that argument because LSU hasn't been impressive all season long. Just like PSU, LSU has had a piss poor OOC record and lost to the top teams in their conference. Like Iowa, LSU has had injuries that have somewhat hampered their results if at all.

    So where is it laughable?

LSU has arguably the worst example of clock management and coaching this year...

    So where is it laughable?
LSU's losses are to the #1 and #2 teams in the nation, in which LSU had their 3 best players out for the Alabama game, and Bama had extra players (refs) on their side. LSU held UF to the lowest point total in along time. The Ole Miss game should of been a win, but we all know about the "clocking it" and LSU was without RB and FB, and QB was still hurt but played. Losses to SEC teams. Could easily have only one loss (Florida)

Iowa had to come back from behind in most of their games in a pitiful conference, and got beat by a nobody and by OSU. How many good wins do they have?
PSU lost twice to B10 opponents at home and got whipped by OSU. They also have ZERO quality wins.
I will even throw in OSU, lost at home to a very down USC team who has 3 ugly losses. Lost to Purdue (who is Purdue? dunno), barely squeaked by Navy at home.
  • devil1197
Losses are losses pal. Sorry that LSU couldn't get it done in the big games. A lot of should of could of in your post.

You make up excuses for LSU with injuries but yet you refuse to note that Iowa was without Stanzi and their starting RB against Northwestern and Ohio State both ended in losses. By the way, Iowa has beaten a top 10 team and another possible Top 25 team in Arizona if they finish out 8-4 with a W over USC. LSU has beaten no team currently ranked in the top 25.

I am sorry but the same exact excuses you make for LSU apply to PSU and Iowa.
  • cats gone wild
You are right, you can make excuses about injuries for Iowa, but as I said LSU has losses to the #1 and #2 teams that are undefeated. No other teams have played that caliber of teams out of this list. And its not like LSU got whipped either.

SEC>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>big 10, so LSU's losses to the type of teams they played dont look as bad as Iowas and PSU's. And Im waiting for you to post PSU excuses or great wins. I would take LSU's wins over Iowa's or PSU any day. PSU is an alright win for Iowa, but nobody really knows how good they are. Beating Arizona is not a quality win.

Can you tell me though, how you feel Iowa or PSU deserves to be top 10 or if you think they are 2 of the top 10 teams in the country?

Wait, you're going to argue NFL players per team as a valid metric to use... then don't even TRY to explain away how the putrid ACC somehow is #2 in this list? That is, if you take this list as the holy grail of defining great college conferences.

Unless you want to claim the ACC as the second best league in the country, I think you can discount this as being a valid criteria to judge.

Tenn and UK went to OT
Ranked LSU beat unranked Ark in OT
And ranked Ole Miss got beat by unranked Miss St.

This conference has MORE depth than any conference every year, and you have to be well prepared every week. Even the non-con ranked teams get beat by the SEC unranked teams.
But when unranked teams in the Big 10 upset ranked teams in the Big 10 it's because the conference is weak. Double standards are great.
Couldn't agree more DWCCrew. You need to have the same standards for everyone. And I am coming at this from the SEC fan who hears that from Big Ten Fans.

They claim the SEC is weak due to some big teams losing to non-ranked teams....but then claim the Big 10 is solid, and that unranked teams beating ranked ones in the Big Ten goes to show the strength of the conference.

Once again that argument is fine...just remember it goes both ways guys.

It's skewed because I'm guessing that the ACC numbers include teams that currently make up the ACC while ignoring the raiding of the Big East that took place a few years back. Most of Miami's NFL players were Big East players and not ACC.

Iowa wasn't impressive even with Stanzi in. They needed a fluke play to get by Indiana and two blocked field goals to get escape from Northern Iowa...not to mention the dogfight with Arkansas State. Give them credit for the wins, but LSU would still beat the crap out of them.
