What needs to happen for OSU to make the Rose Bowl?

  • BigAppleBuckeye
OK, cue the troll comments, but all kidding aside, what would need to happen for OSU to play in the Rose Bowl?

Obviously, an Iowa win over MSU this weekend would help. Assuming that happens, and there is a 3-way tie for 1st, who goes? And assuming its not OSU, how do we get in?

My apologies, I have been out of the country for 2 weeks, in case this was covered previously, thanks ...

It was already covered, but I'm too lazy to find the thread so I'll just answer you here.

In the event of a three way tie if one team beat the other two then that team goes (which won't happen since MSU and OSU don't play each other). The second tie breaker in a three way tie is if one team lost to both of the other two teams in it goes to the head-to-head winner between those two. Again, that won't matter with MSU, Wisky, and OSU this year.

Since none of the normal tie breakers come into play if there is a three way tie at the end of the season the team with the highest BCS ranking will get the conference's automatic bid. So, if Michigan State loses Saturday it's likely that they would fall below OSU. So OSU would then need Wisconsin to lose, or would somehow need to jump Wisky in the BCS in order to get to the Rose Bowl. Wisconsin losing isn't likely because their remaining games are @Purdue, Indiana, @Michigan, and Northwestern.

Thanks man ... looking at Wisconsin's schedule vs. ours, wouldn't it then be possible that Wisconsin's BCS rating will drop due to poor competition, and ours will rise after the Iowa game? Then again, Minny sucks, so it may be a wash.

The only remaining teams that have a semi-realistic chance of upsetting Wisconsin are Northwestern and Michigan. I said "semi" realistic.

That being said Wisky is pretty much a shoe-in for the Rose Bowl.

watch out here--tsun will have nothing to lose, and Wisky does not play well there

It's possible that our computer rankings will improve and theirs will drop, but if we have identical records they will stay ahead of us in the human polls because they beat us head to head. Now, only being one spot higher doesn't guarantee that they will stay ahead of us in the BCS, but it's not likely that we would get that big of a boost from the computers for us to move ahead of them.

I would bet if Iowa beats msu and we beat iowa, that would put us ahead of wisconsin

That's a possibility but I wouldn't lay money down on it. Even if Iowa beats MSU and OSU beats Iowa, Wisconsin chances of winning out are high. That plus some other variables will keep Wisky slightly ahead of Ohio State....or should anyway.

Let's face it, just as it happens every friggin year the Buckeyes always yield the "control their own destiny" factor by losing to someone they really shouldn't.

in the last couple of years, yes...but I don't know if this years' loss to Wisky necessarily falls into that category (as evidenced by their win last week AT Iowa)

    1.Beat Iowa(which I don't think will happen)

    2.Wisconsin has to lose again

    3.Michigan State has to lose

There is another way OSU can end up in the Rose Bowl. If Michigan State wins out, there is the possibility that they go to the BCS Championship game. The Rose Bowl could then select an at-large team to replace them and tie breakers wouldn't apply.

That is a possibility, but a lot of other things have to happen as well.

The Rose Bowl is locked into replacing one of its bowl tie-ins with the highest rated qualifying non-AQ team in the event the Pac 10 or Big Ten champ goes to the title game. So if Michigan State AND Oregon win out, OSU would have a better shot. If it ends up being Michigan State vs., say, Auburn in the title game, and assuming Boise, TCU, or Utah wins out, Oregon (or Pac 10 champ) would play the highest ranked of Boise/TCU/Utah in the Rose Bowl by default.

Win out and let it all take care of itself.
