Boise State: Fiesta Bowl Worthy?

TCU has outgrown the mid-major status. Just like Gonzaga isn't a mid-major anymore in basketball. They field good teams pretty much every year and can compete with the big boys.HighRoller74 wrote:
They are still technically a mid major program. And they weren't #4 last season, which is what the poster was talking about.
When TCU played Boise last year they were #11, so still it wasn't like they weren't ranked. Being a top 15 team is nothing to sneeze at. -
ZeroCoolboise st is worthy.
fwiw:
the announcers a couple weeks ago were talking about how no so called bcs schools will even return a call to the ad at bosie. boise isnt even looking for a home and home for their schedule. they will come to your place and play with no strings attached and cannot find any takers. that tells me that they are legit when teams are afriad toplay them at home. -

Which is all the more reason for a Playoff. I would love it if College Football could have a selection Sunday type deal like basketball does. You'd see better matchups all season, and wouldn't have to rely on some forumla to get the best teams. Get some of the best minds together go over all the tape and pick the best 8 to 16 teams using the same stuff basketball does. SOS, Quality wins etc.
That way you'll see teams like Ohio State schedule more than one good team a year, or a team like Florida schedule at least one game above the mason dixon line. They don't do it now because one loss can knock them out of the title picture, so they want to make the risk of losing small as possible. Can't say I blame teams for not wanting to bring Boise in, when they can just get a MAC or a 1AA school to come take a beating. -

So a couple of nice seasons as a mid-major makes them a big boy and their forty years of futility at that level doesn't mean anything?jordo212000 wrote:

Ever heard of Ladanian Tomlinson, Sammy Baugh, and Davey O'Brien? They all went to TCU. TCU has had a good program in the past. Not just the past 2 yrs.enigmaax wrote: So a couple of nice seasons as a mid-major makes them a big boy and their forty years of futility at that level doesn't mean anything?

You're right. Potential 1st round pick (prior to his meltdown) LeGarrette Blount was starting for Oregon then. Making the win even MORE impressive.elbuckeye28 wrote: Besides when they beat Oregon, that wasn't the same Oregon team then as they are now.
They were a young team last year that ended the season within 1 point of going undefeated.
They are absolutely worthy. Playing bad teams and destroying them is much more impressive than playing bad teams and squeaking by in the final minute (see Iowa). -

Ever heard of 1960 to 1995? That's called three bowls. The wins in the 40s and 50s would be great to talk about, if the wins hadn't pretty much ended then. As for your last decade, all that says is that they've done well in a lower tier conference after they couldn't cut it as a big boy.jordo212000 wrote:

darbypitcher22What league were they in before the Mountain West, TCU I mean?
I'm so happy Oklahoma State lost today. It would have been a terrible injustice to see Boise not make it and see the Fiesta(which to their credit usually gets the matchup right, or has since they put Oregon State against hapless Notre Dame 10 yrs ago) pick 2 losse Oklahoma St. and a 2 loss Iowa or Penn State -
enigmaaxdarby - The old Southwest Conference with the other Texas teams (and for awhile, Arkansas). A few years after Arkansas left for the SEC, the Big 8 brought in Texas, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, and Baylor and became the Big XII, while TCU, Houston, SMU, and Rice were left to go their own ways.
-
darbypitcher22I thought that's what it was but I wasn't sure.

Weren't they in CUSA for a few years max?? I'm almost positive when Tomlinson was there they were CUSA.enigmaax wrote: darby - The old Southwest Conference with the other Texas teams (and for awhile, Arkansas). Yes, actually they first joined the WAC then CUSA and then the Mountain West. It was four or five years in each one - my mind was on one track in distinguishing between their AQ-equivalent conference and non-AQ type conferences.Red_Skin_Pride wrote:

darbypitcher22how did we go from Boise to TCU?
-
wc expertUntil Boise gets one of those ADs to "return a call" then I say match em up with TCU again. Otherwise, what's to discourage any team from avoiding any potential losses in non-conference matchups? What's OSU got to gain by playing USC, Miami, Va Tech, Texas?
If you want a playoff, let the winner of Boise-TCU play Cincy. Boise, imo, would score some against most of the big boys, but their D would get shredded, same with Cincy. TCU is the best of the three. -
dwccrewI think Boise St. is absolutely BCS worthy. They have performed well all year and won the last Fiesta Bowl they played in. Give them a chance along with TCU.
-
darbypitcher22I think this is what everybody wants; and what everybody will get; unless the powers that be and the bowls find a way to shock us yet again

Seriously this made you question my football knowledge? What made this statement wrong? Last year Boise State was undefeated and trying to get in a BCS bowl. They don't and they get beat by a mid-major. Yes it is arguably(besides maybe Utah) the best mid-major in country, but TCU is still a mid-major.jordo212000 wrote:
Yup TCU is a mid-major. Who just happens to be ranked #4. Whoops haha.elbuckeye28 wrote: Unique...I looked up the score and realized it wasn't "smoked," but again they played a mid major and still lost.
I quit reading your post after that sentence I just quoted. You just showed me everything I need to know about your knowledge of college football
I mean I think Boise State belongs in a BCS bowl, I just don't think they are that impressive and should lose to Iowa(or whoever they play.) I feel that if they were in any BCS conference, they would have at least 2 loses. Now if you don't like my OPINION, that's fine. It is just absurd to call my football knowledge into question over facts. -
darbypitcher22TCU was a Top 15 team last year
-
elbuckeye28Darby....I understand they were actually a top 10 team....I'm just saying they are a mid-major because they are in the MWC, which is a mid-major conference. They have a great program, but their conference holds them back. I mean a victory over TCU usually doesn't garner the respect that a victory over a top tier BCS school does.
-
darbypitcher22Of course it doesn't if you're a top tier BCS school that is supposed to beat them, an Oklahoma or a Texas or somebody else
-
elbuckeye28That's what I'm saying. If OSU were to play TCU and won, then everyboy would say they should have won. If they lost, then fans would be calling for Tressel's job.
-
darbypitcher22I'm not sure they would against this year's TCU team; they're pretty impressive. But against somebody else? yeah, I see your argument

Look at the heat Alabama takes for losing to Utah last year. Utah finished #2/#4 in the polls, but by general message board opinion (for what it is worth) that was a bad loss.darbypitcher22 wrote: I'm not sure they would against this year's TCU team; they're pretty impressive. darbypitcher22It was a bad loss based on the fact that Alabama was considered by most was a stud team and considering how Utah wasn't seen by anybody on tv the entire year

Oregon at beginning of the year <<<<Oregon now.....while the win was impressive, Oregon stuggled mightily at the beginning of the year. They beat Purdue by 2 at home and Masoli didn't throw a touchdown until the 3rd or 4th game. They are MUCH better than they were at the start of the season.Mulva wrote:
