Should osu stop playing 18 games a season against MAC schools?

  • Diamond Dallas Biffle
It clearly isn't paying off in the big games....
Eastern Michigan hadn't won a game in 2 years..but they beat ball state so the Bucks better schedule Ball State for the next few years...
  • THE4RINGZ
Yes. They can't tune up for the big games by beating up The Sisters of Mercy.

No. Although I wish the early schedule was more competitive, there really is no benefit of playing a tough OOC schedule. The way college football is setup, the last team without a lose plays in the NC game, and OSU increases their chances of that by taking the easy wins.

Unfortunately this. Whatever teams gets to the BCS Championship will probably have walloped on 18 Sun Belt teams or a 1-AA school as well.

If Oklahoma makes it they will have played 0 1-AA teams and 2 of their 4 OOC games were against BCS schools. Unfortunately they are the exception when it comes to top teams playing 1-AA patsies to garner wins.

That's the biggest flaw IMO to the BCS. Back when the polls voted on the champion it made sense to play a tough OOC schedule in order to separate yourselves. A playoff would also lead to tougher OOC schedules because teams would want to be battle tested.

I'd like to see them limit their OOC schedule to no more than one MAC team, and forever put the kabosh an any FCS (1AA) teams...there has to be various non AQ conference teams, as well as ACC and Big East teams that they can schedule. I know a response may be "but THEY may not want to play Ohio State"--but you'll never know unless you try.

Most schools are going to take OSU's money and run, I can't imagine that being too large of an issue.

Exactly...there is a lot of money to be made off of playing the OSU and Texas' of the world.

    no.

    i've said this for years.

play a "video game" schedule. put alabama, oregon, Oklahoma, and WVU on the schedule and keep it up forever. i've also got to imagine there is more money to be made FOR OSU if they play those schools as opposed to EMU, OU, Marshall.

As for OSU's loss to Wisconsin, your reasoning is incorrect because Wisconsin played just as poor of an OOC schedule as OSU if not worse. I do agree that OSU should limit the schedule each season to no more than 1 MAC school but their reason for scheduling the MAC makes sense. If we're not going to play anyone why not keep the money in the state and help those schools rather than a sunbelt or WAC or Mountain West or bottom feeder from the BIg East or ACC. The Bucks lost because Wis. was for some reason hungrier than the Bucks. The problem that I have seen for years with Ohio State is that thay beat up on a couple nobodies and start believing their press clippings. After this loss they will wake up and start playing ball and all will be right in Buckeye Nation again but the National Championship is most likely pissed away again.

How would they generate more revenue? They sell out their stadium each game and because of the schedule, they maximize the number of home games. Alabama and Oregon are not going to take $300,000 to play at the Shoe and not have Ohio State play in their stadium.

Would they sell more merchandise? Maybe. But I really don't see how they could maximize their current revenues over what they currently make. Maybe corporate sponsors are willing to give more, but maybe not. And how much does OSU get for playing in a BCS game? If they play that schedule who is to say they make a BCS Bowl every year?

No it most definitely will not.

A playoff would only lead to weaker OOC scheduling, because schools have to MAKE the playoffs first. A playoff would only be between 8 teams most likely; you start scheduling tougher OOC schedules and you will not be in the top 8 at the end of the year.

Your sentence makes sense in college basketball, but not in college football.

They will always play MAC schools because its an easy win and they are close distance from OSU.

I think we need to open the year with a mac schook, then play a big east/acc team then an Sec team. this would allow us to ease into the competition and gets rid of all the mac teams on our schedule every year.
  • I drain 3's
If it were up to me, I'd open up with a MAC school, get one big name program (Texas,Oklahoma,Alabama,USC, etc.), then some middle of the road programs from BCS conferences. For example, Texas A&M, NC State, Oregon State, Cal, Clemson, etc.

The State of Ohio legislature dictates OSU plays in-state schools to keep the $$$ in-house. This ain't never gonna change. But I agree there is absolutely no reason to schedule 3 MACs any one year. But that had no bearing on what happened Sat. night.

But in your heart did you really think the Bucks were the best team in the nation? I actually did not and was very afraid they would get exposed as much. #10 is probably legit.

Legislation dictates how many in state games? 1?

Good comment about believing OSU was the best team. I actually didn't think they were, but I thought they were setup better than anyone else to play in the National Championship due to the schedule.

I'd really like to see OSU schedule ND year in year out. They have the big time name, but they are about the same skill level as any of the MAC schools. It'd be an easy win, and if we play ND in the first game, it'll be hyped all summer giving us potentially more revenue and higher prestige for BLOWING them out every game. It's not like ND is ever going to beat OSU anyway, they tried a couple years ago and we all saw what happened.

Kind of like what OSU did this year with Miami.

    It would be much beter

I don't know what world you live in, but you need to come out of it.

Football would not be like that. It's too physical and dangerous of a sport to play 3-4 big time OOC games then play your conference games.

Agreed, I think it'd be the exact opposite of what CC said. There'd be absolutely no motivation to risk getting beat up with a tough OOC game before conference season because the conference games would be your ticket to the playoffs.
